I wholeheartedly agree with this! Typewriters aren't and never will be outdated (because by that same logic, pen and paper would be "outdated", I mean come on). I'm a screenwriter (actually writing a script for a project I intend to direct in the (hopefully) near future), and typewriters help my process IMMENSELY.

I actually blame the movie Misery for my love of typewriters. I've been writing "scripts" since the 4th grade (I put scripts in quotations because some of the stuff I've written at 11 isn't the best or in the right format😬) so I went from writing by hand in my notebooks, then onto the computer. But after watching Misery, I got my Grandma's old typewriter from her attic and it's a more soothing process. I remember a video where Tim Allen says that you get lost in the sound and that is EXACTLY how I feel using one. You get lost in your mind and the sound that after a couple of minutes, you realized that you've written more than 20+ pages...

Well I'm just a regular ol' nerd who likes mechanisms like locks, watches and of course typewriters. I don't think any movie inspired that, but my dad was a mechanic who specialized in carburetors so maybe that's where it all comes from. You know, all those little parts doing their little things to get your car running perfectly...

This may be the first KZread how-to video I've seen that has 100% valid advice. The part about transferring a typescript to computer file offering another chance to improve -- I was hoping you'd say that, and you did. Great advice throughout.

(or what have you). Making the food is always different than tasting it, I guess. My mother, gifted me her 1934 Underwood portable, on my last visit to her. She is the second owner of the typewriter. She bought it from her landlord (she worked for the railroad, and would rent rooms from the local folks). It was his first wife's typewriter. Turns out the original owner wrote "romance novels" back in the 1930s. How cool is that? It has a writer's vibe! I found said typewriter tucked away in a corner of a pantry last visit, and mom said, "It's yours!". Mom is 96 and took a creative writing workshop about 15 years ago. I helped her put her stuff out on a blog about growing up in the 30's on a farm. Anyway, my first purchase was a Royal Quiet De Lux. Looks very similar to the one you are typing on, in this video. I dated the Royal - 1949, and it was the last of the run of the Quiet De Lux's before I think they moved onto the one you typed on. Enjoyed your video, subscribed, and looking forward to digging into your content. p.s. I actually laughed out loud when you put the pipe in your mouth, AND when I saw that you put the pencil in your mouth. I think that is a typewriter/editor trait, eh? Enjoyed!

Hi @YogaWithGail. Sorry for the late reply. I love this story about your mother and your Underwood. It solidifies the notion for me that most typewriters function as generation starships. Each, by this point, has lived many lives, told many stories, and changed many hearts and minds over the course of many years. To answer your question, "How cool is that?" I think it's very cool, indeed. The machine in this video is a Royal KMG, but you're right that both the KMG and Quiet DeLuxes are excellent machines. The KMG was the big "desktop computer" model of the day while the Quiet DeLuxe and other models like the Aristocrat were "laptop computers." Funny to think of them this way, but it seems era-appropriate. Regardless, wishing you well with your Royal. I think they're great machines. So glad to have you aboard and wishing both you and your mother well!

Been using the "working" typewriters to summarize recently heard podcasts, posting said summaries on my blog, and to use them for writing quotes for crafty work. Going down the rabbit hole.... Enjoyed your era-appropriate correlation! Thanks!

You've nailed it here. That process of getting stuff on a page is so therapeutic and letting your fingers loose on a typewriter. It helped me makes sense of and improve a short film script I'm working on

I have a nice felt pad for my typewriter and was going to buy a second one for when I work in a different room (the one I have cost $30). But then I saw one of those foam mat tiles under your laptop and I knew I had a bunch of those. So, I grabbed one and it works great as a pad for underneath my Lettera 22. Thank you, as always, for the great content and thank you for inadvertently saving me $30. It is much appreciated!

Anything that absorbs vibration and sound (the two are one in the same, @TrumpetGuy723). I currently work with thick wool sewing pads you can get off Amazon for next to nothing. Make it work! And keep typing!

I agree with you 100%. I have learned how to type back in High School when I took typing classes just to meet more girls. It worked. Out of a class of 31 girls, I was the only boy. That was back in 1966. I'm going to be 73 this year and to this day, I type everyday. I also have 8 manual typewriters and 1 Electric Selective. All work great and still look like brand new. I love typewriters.

Thanks, SD. I'm a bear about recycling. All paper gets reused and reused. Also, it turns out that using these old machines strains the power grid less while keeping me (more or less) off computers whose production requires rare earth minerals ... and whose own recycling can be ... err ... complicated.

This is fascinating to me. I’ve got a couple of typewriters and a couple of laptops, When my MSWord subscription expired on my laptop and I didn’t have the money to renew, I pulled out my portable and haven’t looked back.

I found this video at the right time. I literally bought a typewriter 4 days ago and began the new play that I've had sitting in my head for months, the following day. I'm excited about the process. I love the fact that I can't just hop on the internet when I dry up a little. It just forces you to write, I think that computers and their ability to edit straight away hampers our creativity. We want our work to be perfect so we seek to make it so as we churn it out for the first time. Rather than just getting it onto the page and then moulding it through rewriting. Totally inspired by your process and I love you typewriter display cabinet/bookshelf. Super cool. In a nerdy kind of way 😂

I did my first serious writing on a 1938 Royal KHM, starting in 1976. After burglars burned my place down in 1986, destroying my typewriter, I switched to PCs. But I miss the physical experience of typing on a sheet of paper, and recently bought a Royal Express portable. Not quite the same, but it does bring back memories. And I know a bad tendency I have at a PC keyboard is to compulsively revise and correct as I write, which sometimes derails me from the hot, bloody stream of creative composition I want to ride.

Very good Video. I am considering using a typewriter for my creative writing, because I just love the fact that nothing between you and the pages is there to distract you like on a computer. I might have to open up in this comment section because of how relatable this video is. To be honest, I really want a typewriter for myself. Not only that but I also really want a radio, a Nokia phone and all that old stuff back in the day. A lot of people think I'm weird. Even my family does not agree with the idea of having an old typewriter. I was saving money to buy a typewriter because it was just so satisfying to have one. I hope my decision to buy this typewriter at least has some support because I feel very motivated after watching this video. I want to be an artistic person and love writing as a hobby even though I'm not much of a writer. Regardless I hope I'm doing the right thing. Subscribe to this amazing channel too for expiration.

And therefore, I find them-as you say-more satisfying. I'm glad this video has motivated you. First of all, I really like your sense of humour. I also like your way of speaking. It's funny, fast and articulate... Also, I'm now convinced I have to write on a typewriter. Writing in front of a screen is so painful. You need to charge the thing and your eyes get red and internet is like a monster watching you under the bed, waiting for a sudden attack and even when trying different margins in the same page you have to move the mouse and click and move and click and move and click again and it gets kinda boring after a couple of minutes. That's it. Very good video, sir. It actually made me feel better as a human being, somehow. So thanks. Loved your intro too, now that's it. Or not? Yes it is.

A fair, entry lever (to use a more modern term) machine, affordable, good looking and very common in my country because it was manufactured in Bulgaria. I bought it, just for the "no risk"of it, you know :) The Remington, of course, is a different story. I made a video for it on my channel, have a look.

Someone recently asked me what my plans for retirement were (not sure why, I'm 35. I think we were talking about the FIRE movement or something.) "I don't plan to retire." "Huh? Don't you have any big goals you want to tackle in your later years that you can't while working?" "I get paid to write (marketing copy, but hey, it's writing). So, every morning, I write what I want for a while, go run a few miles, and then write some for my job. In the evening, I write what I want. Then I go to bed. Rinse and repeat. The only thing retirement would change is what I write about throughout the day. And frankly, I don't mind taking a break from myself in the middle of the day." Happiness isn't complicated.

Actually, may I have your permission to feature this excerpt in a forthcoming video? It's really solid.

It's not entirely the same, but these are also really good arguments for writing music on paper. It's not uncommon for composers to still write (or at the very least, sketch) sheet music on staff paper, using an instrument as reference. Writing straight on the computer is incredibly convenient (and most of the time a requirement- especially if you write for media), but for a lot of people it's not a replacement. It's just different.

On this point, @LuiDeca, I’ll defer to your expertise. When I write music, such as it is, I scribble lyrics and guitar chord arrangements onto whatever paper is handy. But maybe that’s your point. As you say, it’s not a replacement, it’s just different. Also, as you say, computers certainly offer convenience in many contexts. All of which boils down to: well met, new friend. Thank you for your good comment, and may all your creative endeavors prove fruitful.

Irene, I figured the Liam Neeson thing out one holiday season. I was having dinner with family and someone suggested I say, "I have a very particular set of skills ...skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you ..." They thought it was hilarious. Long way of saying thanks for the compliment. I agree with you completely, I use typewriters so often to get my projects off the ground. The total freedom to just get things down on paper. To make mistakes and not care. I was going to try to restore my grandmother's old 1920s Remington Portable, but too many small parts are snapped off. I'm currently trying to find one because of my light sensitivity making computer word processors painful to use.

Hello, really interesting video. As per 03:04, may I ask you when do you re-type your work? I mean: - Do you draft the entire plot from beginning to end, then edit and re-type the complete script? - Or do you edit single scenes/chapters/etc., re-type them and then go further with the story? Hi Francesco. The short answer is, the work tells me what needs to be done. The longer answer is this: if I were to try to impose a "when" on the moment I switch to the typewriter, that would be my tiny conscious mind assuming it can do things better than my infinitely more vast unconscious mind. When writing (or doing almost anything creative), I'm a huge believer in establishing some basic parameters with the conscious mind. But within that vessel, the unconscious mind must be left to play, or else everything will come across stale, flat, and unprofitable. In some cases, I find myself moving back and forth to the typewriter at the end of a scene. In other cases, I've scratched down whole acts or chapters before moving to first typeset. It really depends on the work at hand. I find when I listen, I will be led by it. Hope this helps!

I say good for you. If you get more creativity from using your typewriter, I say go for it. Of course, I use a typewriter as well. But I use an IBM Selectric. A manual typewriter requires a lot more pressure on the keys. And we are getting older, and with arthritis. that's no fun. But anyway, keep up the good work.

Hi db. It's an incredibly personal process. Sort of like Harry Potter. The wand must choose the wizard. A lot depends on the size of your hands, the keyboard layout, the x factor of whether the machine and you play well together. If you have a vendor near you, I'd go in and put your hands on several machines. Try them out to see which feels right to you. I know some great shops in NYC, Philly, and Boston, for instance, but there are many others everywhere. Not as common as Best Buy, for instance, but you can find them. Be careful ordering machines online through eBay and other markets. A lot of people underrepresent the condition of the machine. A vendor should offer a good type sample. They should warrant that paper loads reliably through the platen and that all features work. They should accept returns within a reasonable period in case you find the machine lacks in any way. To my mind, you can't go wrong with a good refurbished Smith Corona portable. The 5T series from the mid- to late-50s is justifiably famous for being comfortable, full-featured, and reliable as an old Ford or Chevy. Royal portables such as the Royal Quiet DeLuxe are favorites among many. I have a few, and like them depending on the condition they're in. You might also consider an Olivetti Lettera 22 or 32. Great machines assuming they've been well cared for. If you plan on traveling a lot, consider what they used to call an "ultra portable," such as the Smith Corona Skyriter or the Hermes Rocket of Baby. One nice feature about the Olivettis mentioned above is that they're only about 8 or 9 pounds. This means they have the full features of a portable typewriter (tab sets, full keyboard, etc.) but weigh about as much as the Skyriter or Baby. Probably with a speakeasy in back, and their own line of beard oil. But hey, beggars can't be choosers. Once these lockdowns ease up, I'll venture out and let you know if anything comes of it. We don't have time for beard oil. Fountain pen ink maybe. This may interest you, db. I'm in my NYC apartment now. Cranked out a few pages this morning at 12:30 am on my Skyriter. I agree, Don. Oliver Stone once said (I think it was Oliver Stone) that the secret to his success as a writer was this principle: ass in chair. Or, as Somerset Maugham used to say, "I write only when inspiration strikes. Fortunately it strikes every morning at nine o'clock sharp." The tools don't matter as much as the commitment. That being said, I like a good tool. In the case of my typewriters, pencils, and so on, it makes the work more pleasant and less distracting. Wishing you great success with your work. Hi Faysal. Not sure if I understand your question. If you’re asking if some typewriters can be switched to type in other languages, the answer is yes. Two models come to mind immediately, the old Hammond manuals and the more modern IBM Selectric. Both machines were designed to have their internal works swapped out via cartridges for typing in other languages. Does this help? I hope so. Please let me know and wishing you my best.

Hi Nobody. That's a 1952 Royal KMG.It was a fairly common standard office typewriter for its day. And it's a beast. You can get a ton of work done on a KMG. I highly recommend them though (and this should be obvious), only if you want a typewriter that will be a more-or-less permanent fixture in your space. The KMG weighs over 30 pounds! Cheers!

Great question, MJ. First thing you should know is that "cheap" typewriters are not always cheap. Sometimes the reason they're underpriced is because they need work. By the time you put that work in or have it done by a professional, it can be more cost effective and enjoyable to buy from a reputable dealer. Food for thought. Other ways I've found great bargains on typewriters include eBay, Craigslist, GoodWill online, thrift shops, flea markets, estate sales, garage sales, moving sales, antique shops, and word of mouth. If you're buying a machine online, be sure to ask lots of questions from the vendor about the what specific shape the typewriter's in. Get a type sample if you can and be sure you know the vendor's return policy in case you're not satisfied with what you're sent. I hope this helps!

@@bangmachiv Got it. Mostly, I use binder clips and ordinary paper clips. They make it easy to shuffle the pages around and reorganize them. Plus you can reuse them as often as you like. I'm still using binder clips and paper clips I've had for 25 years.

@@bangmachiv When I need them, which is rarely, I use simple office folders, like they used to have in filing cabinets. Again, I've used the same folders for years. I mark them with sticky notes that I can change or dispose of at will.

@@newtoatheism5968 Good. My experience is that it slows me waaaaaay down. It's about making the pages, that's it. Don't rate them. Just make them. Mistakes are inevitable on a vintage manual. That sort of accentuates the point that you don't have to be good. You just have to get it done. Later, you can go back and edit all you like and repeat that process as many times as you like. Meanwhile, it's fun to move the keys and make the words and hear the clickety-clack. Stay in touch and let me know how it goes. Wishing you good luck.
