This is wrong. The main character and the protagonist are two different things. You can have more than one main character but only one protagonist. Basically: A main character is through whom you see the story unfold. You see the story through their eyes. The protagonist is who the story is about or someone who drives the plot forward. So you could have a story about Abraham Lincoln, but seen through the eyes of his murderer.

You can have many protagonist
The main character of my novel is literally the Devil, so I doubt he has to grow and learn something, right? As much as I'd love to write it, just doesn't make sense, the guy has lived more than everyone. So he'll be a "static" character. Actually, this story is about him making humanity learn something. There are also other two characters: a "closeted" priest and a detective.
