Types of Breast Forms - What I Wish I'd Known

In this video I discuss all the things that I've learned about types of breast forms and post mastectomy prosthetics. I've recently found out that I wasn't being offered the full array of choices when it came to prosthesis options. I imagine this is a common experience so I want to share what I've learned. Just another breast cancer survivor and advocate, here--don't take my words as medical advice please!

Amoena is the main brand that offers custom prosthetics. To find out who near you might offer them, email: info@amoena.com
The online Amoena retailers directory does NOT designate which retailers do custom orders so I wouldn't use that tool for this kind of search. You'll need to use the email above.
Here are some retailers who do custom work with Amoena on the West Coast:
PROSTHETIC CENTER OF EXCELLENCE, Vegas
MARIPOSA BREAST HEALTH CENTER, Bend OR
CAROL'S MASTECTOMY SHOPPE, Salt Lake City, UT
LATE BLOOMERS, San Mateo, CA
ENHANCE, Sacramento, CA
and ALLIES, in Bellingham WA
"Remember the Moon" in Eugene Oregon is where I went.
For the athletic prosthetics: The "beanbag" one that I ordered (shown in black in the video) is a brand called "Trulife" and the clear silicone one with the grooves/channels is a brand called "Anita".
Note that without insurance a custom breast form is upwards of $4500. Everyone has different insurance coverage, so it's worth asking about yours. Note also that it IS possible to get Medicaid to pay for these with a prior authorization. You'll just have to try to see if they will in your case. When you think about the money it costs them to put in an INTERNAL breast form (implant) it seems clear that this external "durable medical equipment" should be covered too. Let's make some noise until they are!

I was very unhappy at my local Cancer Center that offered prosthetics, bras, etc. I was previously a DD but the saleswoman recommended the Amoena in a size that was barely a C cup. I had very little projection, so I refused them and insisted on ordering a larger size, but she kept trying to persuade me to keep the ones I received. I did not relent, so she placed an order for the next size up. When I received them, one had hair and food crumbs on the underside, and the other one had a tear on the underside!! Also, each had a different style number and design, so they did not match!!! (Probably trying to clear her inventory, too!!) So I had to refuse those. She FINALLY got some that were OK, but I still was not happy. They are not comfortable and feel too firm. She also measured me for bras and the ones she ordered were way too tight in the band. Horrible experience and no empathy at all from the saleswoman. What I have been wearing for the past 3-1/2 yrs was a pair of Amoena forms that were donated to me by a co-worker whose mother had a pair that she only wore a few times (her mother passed away). They were the closest to my natural breasts in look, size, and feel. They are heavy so I only wear those out in public (work, etc). I did find a great substitute just this week on Amazon that are similar to the "bean bag" style you showed in this video. I love them. They are comfortable, perfect for swimming, working iut, and general use. And each one was about $30! I was able to buy 4 for the price of 3!!! On Amazon, do a search for "Sendyou breast prosthesis". The brand also has some very pretty mastectomy bras! (Note: There no space in "Sendyou").

@Liz0409 Wishing you fast recovery, prayers to you 🙏 I am so scared to go through mastectomy, BRCA1 positive, suggested prophylactic mastectomy..... Did you go flat or implants? I've watched the videos on goldilocks mastectomy where they reconstruct the breasts using your own skin and fat/tissue

@@amazingautumn12 I went flat for now. I didn't want to put my body through anymore trauma than absolutely necessary. In a few years I might consider reconstruction but for now I'm going to focus on recovery and being cancer free.

I wish I had known how difficult it would be to find large breast forms in Blighty. Even so-called specialist companies don't cater for larger cup sizes. I rely on Knitted knockers a lot. As far as I can gather, people with larger cup sizes can't get custom prosthetics either. The NHS gives people one (or two) basic prosthesis. Mine is huge & heavy. Life with one GG (J) isn't as easy as I thought it would be. I need a prosthetic because It affects posture & balance & I would look v odd otherwise.

@estrogendiaries As far as I can gather, they don't make large custom breast forms. It's hard enough to find them on the shelf. Don't get me started on bras. You can't go without if you have one big breast because it literally makes you lopsided.

I think that's common. Some insurance policies don't have much for us. But a lot of prosthetic stores have a "giving closet" where folks donate the ones that they didn't use.
