My cat Liam was diagnosed when he was 10 years old. Fortunately with a major change in diet and change in how often he eats, he only needed insulin for 6 months when his vet took him off the insulin. He is 12 years old now.

My dog jumped off the furniture and injured her neck and shoulder. Our Vet prescribed prednisone for the pain because she couldn't even lift her head. The prednisone destroyed her pancreas and I spent the next six years giving her insulin shots every twelve hours. She went blind, then she went deaf, then she developed dementia, and then the dementia became so bad that she was spending her days pacing the floors, searching for me but unable to recognize me, even when I picked her up to say, "Hey, I'm right here!" At that point, I had to let her go. Having her euthanized was the hardest decision I ever had to make because when she was a puppy, she had chased off all her litter mates as if to say, "This is MY human!" But I couldn't imagine anything worse for her, than to be searching for me non-stop and not be able to "find me" because of the dementia, essentially spending her days thinking I'd abandoned her. She was fifteen when I let her go and I miss her every day. Diabetes is AWFUL.

@@danielar3716 And yet, not nearly as horrible as what happened to the senior dog I adopted last fall...just ten days ago. He tore up the corner of a rug and I thought I caught him before he swallowed any of it, but I didn't. Late at night, he was trying to poop out carpet threads and couldn't. I started calling Vet clinics as soon as they opened in the morning. NOT ONE IN A 30 MILE RADIUS was willing to make time for him. NOT A SINGLE ONE. I begged and pleaded but they all said "we're too busy, call someone else." At 12:40 pm he died in my arms, in agonizing pain, blood coming out both ends, convulsing. I'm so traumatized, I don't know if or even when, I'll ever get another dog, now that I know the vets around here can't be relied upon in an emergency.

I had worked for a vet in high school and college. I was amazed how many pets are diabetic. Learned to give insulin and knew the signs. So when my dog started having accidents, I took her to the vet, praying for UTI. It was diabetes. She was about 6 when diagnosed and lived to be 15. Hazel had type 1 diabetes. Insulin twice a day. She'd even let us know if we hadn't given her her shot yet.

My Tiger has had Diabetes since 2016z. He never went into remission, but he’s doing very well. He will be 16 in June. He gets his shot twice a day, but otherwise is a normal cat. Well, to me he’s not normal, he’s just an amazing furbaby!

Just re-weighed my chubby cat (to make sure both the vet's scale and my scale had the same number) and he is officially going on a diet 🤦‍♀️. He went from 12 lbs last year to 14 lbs at his check up this year. His ideal weight is 10-11lbs.
