I have had 2 of my cats develop Type 1 Diabetes. The first (Chiquette) was an 8 year old rescue who was diagnosed in late 1996. Insulin shots twice a day, special food, back to vet once a week to test her blood, the whole 9 yards. My hubby and I agreed that, as long as she was having a good quality of life, we'd do everything we could to keep her going. Sept 1997 she threw a blood clot and I found her on the floor in a puddle of urine, paralyzed in her lower half. We let her go. Feb 2023 the cat my son and I found, almost starved to death, in a rural park in March 2010 (Star) was diagnosed with Diabetes. This time it was completely different thanks mostly to having an at home glucose tester now. She spent a month on daily insulin and we completely changed the food we were giving our cats. We have 8 including 5 ferals that we TNR'd. That stands for Trap, Neuter, Retain, right?😉By summer she was completely off daily insulin, only needing it if her levels got into double digits. My son and I are like human versions of Diabetic Alert Dogs. We can both tell that her sugar is getting too high just by petting her. Her fur just feels different to us when that happens. The home glucose tester has been a game changer and a life saver! If she goes over 14 she gets a shot of insulin. Knock on wood, she hasn't needed any so far this year! Star will be 16 on May 4 and she's probably gonna outlive us all!🧡🧡Also, everything I needed to know about the Pancreas I learned from Weird Al! He literally has a song all about the pancreas! The song is simply titled "Pancreas" and it's well worth a watch. Thank you for all the hard work you put into these videos to keep us Crazy Cat Ladies entertained! It is very much appreciated! 🧡😸I make cheesecakes for my vet. I wish I could send you one but they don't travel well. If you're ever in Ontario, Canada let me know and I'll make a cheesecake for you too!

My pup died a horrible death from Diabetic Keto acidosis. Didn’t know he was diabetic, had him to the vet three times that week, kept calling them and letting that he was so sick. They acted like I was I inconveniencing them. When they finally did blood work, his glucose was over 400, ran there in the office, but took them two days get back me. Finally couldn’t any longer and took him to the emergency vet, where glucose stopped reading at 700 and ketones at 11. He put in a good fight with insulin drip, but with too late and too much damage. I said goodbye to my baby boy, my soul dog. It’ll be 3 years on 04/29, my heart is broken for what he went through, what more I could and should have done more for him.

It's a heartbreaking exasperating experience. I had one kitty diagnosed at about 15 yo with diabetes. Gave her LANTUS twice daily. She lived to past 21 yo. My second kitty diagnosed was a nightmare experience; and I certainly empathize with you on the Vet/ ER experience. I paid over $5000 for 5 days in hospital to only have to do a similar thing. I brought her home at nite, next morning I took her to my excellent Vet and had to let her go. I learned diabetes is very difficult to handle with some kitties. I was so lucky my Cinderella lived for over 21 yo. But my Bella similar to your baby, I lost her too soon and the hole it leaves in the heart cannot be filled. ❤️🐾🤗

My 17 yr old cat became diabetic. It was one of the hardest things i ever had to deal with since i lived an hour from a vet, so balancing the blood sugar was really challenging. And i was broke so i couldnt afford the overload of vet trips, added gas, and lifelong meds. Most people wish to win the lottery for things for themselves. I wished and prayed for it so i could be as good of pet parent as someone who could afford an animal with diabetes. It survived about 8 months and im sure it died because i was trying to balance its blood sugar on my own without driving to the vet twice a week. (I was making the trip every other week. Sometimes every week if i could)

As a human type 1 diabetic, I did not realize that dogs and cats could get T1D. I just always assumed it was type 2.

I had a lovely cat a number of years ago that had diabetes. I don't know if it was type 1 or type 2 because I was never told, but he did have pancreatitis. He developed the diabetes when he was about 10 or so, and I treated him with insulin injections every day. We went through one entire vial of insulin plus I changed up his diet and gave him some collustrum, I think it was, that somehow I got ahold of somewhere. After the vial, he didn't have the diabetes anymore. My doctor was really surprised, he said it was quite unusual.I don't know what put him into remission, but he lived till he was 16, and it was kidney failure that he succumbed to.
