His voice is some incredible mix of haunting, yet clear and warm.
Undoubtedly this man does the best version of this song.

@@metalabsynth nope the original was Emry Arthur 1927 listen to that one first and The song was originally titled "Farewell Song" in a songbook by Burnett dated to around 1913.

You do know it was him singing for George Clooney in "O Brother, Where Art Thou"? George is always quick to give Dan credit for the voice over.

Well, the Blessed Bob did a version of this song on his first album back in 1962. I rather like that version.

This is insane. It feels like he's playing 3 guitars and his voice is as crisp as years ago!

Yea, amazing how it’s like he’s playing the percussion, rhythm guitar and those little licks all seamlessly.

he is using a double drop D open tuning which helps.

My dad always said he was the angry mandolin/guitar player, trying to rip the strings off everytime he plays. Just his style. 😊

@@dannyinausit’s a tremendous rendition. I was on here looking to see if anyone knows his tuning. His rhythm play is spectacular

I'm not a fan of "this beats that", as I can enjoy any GOOD music and this cover definitely qualifies, but that said check this one out and see what you think, if you have the interest and time. Stick with it, pretty stock/tame up front, and some pretty cool and very nonstandard treatments within. It's not a 'stock' version, so to speak, but a lot of fun playing outside the numbers a bit for a portion of his take. If nothing else I expect you might enjoy some of the SERIOUSLY low unaltered vocal effects, use headphones, or better yet a good subwoofer and you can feel it as well as hear it...not kidding: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fIWNu7qHj6_PnMo.html And now for something completely different, if you liked that, here are two awesome covers, on mostly porn for drummers and full up treatments, the other, just NUTS. The last one has just a few views, 157 million and climbing..stick with that one, two...it is something everyone should hear at least once, IMHO. It started out and I thought, "this is going to be hilarious". A few seconds later it was, "damn, this is great!". kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZoaHl7Ssg7PZo9o.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/l2h10Y-ifrO2hcY.html

@@andrewvachon1943 Just looked up a bunch of versions of this song. It seems this song goes back to at least 1913. There's a recording from 1928 on KZread by Emry Arthur. It was popularized by the Stanley Brothers in the 50's.
He has golden vocal cords hands to match pure talent.
It ain't easy to play like this. It's harder to sing and play like this, but he not only does it, but also makes it look easy!

You can always learn to play like this - its much more difficult to learn to sing with such power. So its a dynamite combo.
The liner notes of this soundtrack have a line about modern country music that has stuck with me for many years. It' described it as "watered down pop/rock with greeting card lyrics." I'll never forget that. Oh, and this song is the main reason I bought that album. :)

Nailed the reverb on his voice and that mic was an excellent choice.

Outrageously good. Outrageous. The voice, the guitar, the whole damn package. I mean, the quality of his voice. Are you kidding me?
I used to pick up my kid at high school in my black firebird. He liked being seen in that. But I also rolled down the window and cranked this every time. He hated it. I loved it. Such a great track.

Drop D. All day.
Just saw Dan, Kane Brown, and Brad Paisley in Raleigh, NC last night and though I’m not a real fan of country music, I enjoyed the concert very much. The musicianship of these artists was as good as anyone out there if not better than most...
It's impressive how his voice is just the same since the beggining of the career
Still so good
Great!!!
That guitar tone.
