Tylerton, Maryland | Smith Island - Population 36 | Bus Life Adventures Vlog 20
After visiting the community of Ewell on Smith Island and then exploring Crisfield back on the mainland of Maryland. We met Kim Lawson who was the former Mayor of Crisfield. Thanks to his help and connections we got the inside scoop at MeTompkin and their soft shell crab operation. Then after many phone calls and arrangments, we lined up a boat ride to Tylerton, the smallest and most remote community on Smith Island.
Bus Life can be ultra spontaneous at times and this was one of those periods in Maryland. I'm an Evans and my grandfather Abraham Rich Evans came from Smith island. Smith island has a special place in my heart. Beautiful place and the best crabcake I have ever had came from Smith island. I live across the bay now in the northern neck of VA.

What part of VA
I lived in Salisbury, MD for 17 years in 1990's and mid 2000's. Wonderful place. Smith, Tylerton and Ewell folks are the salt of the earth. Got to know a number of them as well as Tangiermen. No finer person than Duke M, a Smith Island native who has done extremely well for himself, but never forgot his roots. One of the most interesting cultures in America. Fine people.
I just left Smith Island for the first time. Im in love. I did not get to see Tylerton, though. I am seriously in love with this place.
The other side of the island is awesome too.
Love their accent and way of talking, lol. It is the original old English that people in Europe havnt used in decades!
My mother is from Tylerton and I went there in the summers to stay with my grandmother. I loved it.

We finally got our bus! Your videos are such a great resource.
Awesome place, kayaked out to it once on a beautiful October day! We also went there by jetski ! Camp at Janes Island state park. The park has a boat ramp, kayak rentals beaches only accessible by boat.

Too bad that’s Smith Island is washing away with each storm. It has so much history to it!!
Very interesting.
Read Beautiful Swimmers and you will get a better understanding of the area and culture. Try going out with a waterman crabbin next time. Try cleaning 6 big crabs alive, break bodies with claws and swimmers in half, sautee in olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper until turn red (approximately 10 minutes) add 3 big cans of crushed tomatoes with basil, one half of a can water to get tomato remnants out of cans, cook crabs and crushed tomatoes on low, stirring frequently for about an hour or so, add to taste fresh basil (the more the better to us) add crab seasoning or salt and pepper to taste and stir for another 15 minutes or so. It's great on pastas with crab bodies served with pasta. Makes for a tasty and messy spaghetti and crabs dinner.

That looks like a really great place to go during the zombie apocalypse, unless Zombies can swim or walk under water. On my travel list now. My wife and I enjoy a local experience over touristy stuff. Looks very relaxing.

Biggest advice is to stay multiple days there’s several Airbnb listings. Tylerton was really awesome, the crab cake sandwich is a must have, you’ll need a boat ride from Ewell, pending on where you stay. If you see Mary Ada tell her I miss her. 🙌
