Family day is always a great day. Parents see the transformation of their child. It was a great day for me as Mom (RIP) came by bus all the way from Los Angeles since we didn't have a car.

It is interesting how many of the DIs and SDIs were from Detroit, MI. I completed boot camp at Parris Island on January 30, 2009 (1st Battalion, Company B, Platoon 1010). We were in that same building on Family Day. I'm from Indiana, but I lived in a suburb of Detroit for over 5 years. It's great to see Detroiters doing big things in the USMC! Semper Fi!

@@A._J_. Detroiters show a lot of grit, given the circumstances surrounding many of them, from birth to adulthood. From bed bug and roach infested furniture and homes, to hearing gunshots on a daily basis, they show a level of heart many people couldn't fathom. (I can personally attest to this.) When I was in the Detroit police academy, the instructors very much valued Marine Corps experience. I am proud to see any citizen of that city join the brother and sisterhood of the Marine Corps.

As a young 17 year old I joined The Marines making/asking my mother sign for me . If your life isn't going right and you want to change it join the Marines . It isn't easy but no one can ever take the Marine out of you . While I was in bootcamp ( Parris Island)we never had a family day like this.

100% Not sure about college or unsure where is your life headed, the military is an excellent break to figure things out, travel, get discipline, serve your country, get respect, build confidence, learn skills, get huge amounts of college money, and get benefits for life. This only works out if you get an honorable discharge. Please anybody joining, do not F this up because it will haunt you to your grave. The Marines I definitely cannot say is for everyone that's for sure. It was for me though. It was an awesome experience that I cherish to this very day even though I only did 1 tour.

Graduated Nov 1983 from San Diego. I still remember my family day as the Sunday before graduation. I was happy as hell going to a bowling alley for a "burger meal" and rolling a few games paid by our book of chits. The meal hit me like a train from no junk food in my system. I paid for the soda still burping after we reassembled that afternoon.

It amazes me how many of them are out of step going into the hall! I am a Navy man(corpsman), trained by DI's and we were never allowed to get out of step when we were marching! Has boot camp gotten that lax? That soft? Don't get me wrong, Marine boot camp is still the toughest, for good reason. I spent 18 years with the Marines, and came to really enjoy my years with them (1970-1989), I pt'ed with them , marched with them, and even stood staff duty watches with them even though I didn't have to. I had midnight watches with the MP's in downtown Jacksonville. I took radar watches in Honduras. I arranged a medevac while on advance party in Korea for the resident Lt Colonel when he developed botulism food poisoning ( he had dinner the night before with a Korean general, the general died). The Marines are the best fighting force in the world. First in, last out!
