Thanks for the lesson Kelly. Could you soak that folder over piece in water and then tack it to a board to get the curl out? Send me that one you had and I'll try it if you like. Keep the good stuff coming.

Hi, I have a question as a novice deer hair tyer . Can I use belly hair and body hair interchangeably to stack and spin a deer hair fly. I am interested in doing poppers for largemouth and saltwater. Thank you.

Is the hair of a specific species or will most deer belly hair do the job?

Kelly Galloup and Davey McPhail have improved my tying, and therefore my fishing, exponentially. I need to plan a trip to just bullshit with Kelly. I don’t get the vibe that he’d dislike that. I will buy... lunch, whatever. Hey, Kelly! You listening? 😁 With a name like Kelly, you must be one tough, good looking, beer drinking SOB! Fish on! Thanks

I think to translate the message, into something that a practical, hard working, get up early each morning. Fly fisherman would understand.

One has to put it. In the context of an actual 'story'. Which is the part that I always keep circling back to. The information and the expertise. Absent of the story. Is like having a pickup truck. With only two or three wheels. It might be good for something. But not good. For a whole lot.

The story that puts all of this. Into some kind of context. Is to imagine the real fly fisherman. The hard working, everyday, nuts and bolts guy. Who is drifting down one of those broad American rivers. Hucking out their streamer fly. At approximately every two to three yards distance (hunting and not hoping, for the big one).

And what 'value added' effort. Can one put into it? At the point in the process. Of material product selection. And effort made at the fly tying vice. That is going to translate into something. That is going to help out. That hard working, journey man, trades man. Fly fisherman in the boat. At the other end?

A fly maker who explains this, better than most. Is probably Peter Charles (who makes many more 'wet flies' and traditional patterns, than modern streamers). However, many of these point on basic material selection and strategy. Are common in both worlds. It has to do with the extent, or not. That certain colors of material. With 'retain' their color. At a certain depth. Underneath the water. Apparently for instance. Red has a real tendency. Unless it is fished shallow. To simply turn to 'black' as a color. At a certain depth down. Whereas, other colors will preserve the 'color' deeper down. Than others will.

And then there is the whole thing. When one uses 'white' material. Alongside a colored material. The fact that 'white' material will attract more available light. In depth and darkness of water. And it will reflect some of that light. To objects that are nearby. Which if that happens to be a colored material (the 'two tone' buck tails or deer hair etc). That colored material will be able to fish a lot deeper. And still appear to trout. As something other than 'black'. At a certain depth.
