Tying Tarpon Flies The Polish Poonhound

This Killer Pattern should be on your list the next time you're tying tarpon flies!
Today I'm telling one of my favorite tarpon flies. There’s a great story behind it that I will tell you. I call it the Polish Poon hound. I use it from Isla Holbox Mexico over to Key West, and it's been a fantastic tarpon fly for me over the years
Hey everybody, welcome to familiar waters and www.fwfishing.com . I'm Mike Pawlawski. Today I'm tying tarpon flies. This one is called the Polish Poon hound and it reminds me of my dog BJ. Thee’s a story there. Ingredients include rabbit fur, Arctic Fox, krystal flash and saddle hackle, all the sexy stuff you want to tarpan bug. So let's hit the vice and I'll show you how to do that.
Hook: Gamakatsu SC 15 or Tiemco 600 SP
Thread: Black Mono 6/0
Fouling guard: 20-30 lb. mono or fluoro
Tail: Magnum Zonker strip (Color of choice) Barred works great too
Flash: 2 strands Krystal Flash
Under Collar: Polar Chenille Color to match fly
Collar: 2 Saddle Hackle Feathers
Head/Collar: Arctic fox dubbing loop with guard hairs left in.
Eyes: Stick on eyes of choice for a fly that hovers. Barbell eyes for a fly that sinks and Jigs.
Other suggested colors: Black/Purple, Chartreuse/Yellow, All Yellow, All Chartreuse, Red/White, All White, Barred in various colors.
Also try using marabou for the tail for an even lighter landing fly. Works great.

You can see a nice fishy head up front. Great body great color with that Fox fur.
If I'm fishing in places like Isla Holbox Mexico where I need the fly to sink fast barbell eye on it and tie it on a heavier hook like a Gamakatsu SC 17. If I am not sometimes I can just leave it with no eyes, add mono eyes or add the stick on eyes I used today.
That's it the Polish Poonhound. It reminds me of my fabulous Labrador BJ but it also absolutely crushes on tarpon anywhere in the Gulf of Mexico. I have caught some big dogs down in Isla Holbox, Mexico with it all the way up to Key West and it's one of my first go to bugs when we're fishing tarpon. You can tie it in a variety of colors. But if you're looking for new tarpon flies Polish Poonhound is a great one. It's an easy tie. It's quick, you can knock out a bunch in a hurry. So spin a couple up the next time you’re tying tarpon flies, you won’t be disappointed.

Glad you like it! I love this fly and they're quick enough to tie that you can knock a couple out at night if you break some off during the day.

Great video. Tons of information. Thanks. Just found your channel and I enjoy your content. Would love to see some more tarpon flies, something in yellow. Glad your health is good. Been there myself - it's certainly a challenge. What fly did you use on your last video in the Keys? I know it doesn't matter that much but I am a tying nut. Love to see something new to tie. Thanks Kip - Fort Walton Beach, FL

Hey Kip, thanks for watching. That was a tiny guppy imitation my guide ties. Maybe I’ll throw one on the vise for a video. I have a lot of tarpon stuff coming up. I absolutely love fishing tarpon.

That sc 15 is the worst possible tarpon hook ..thin wire tin plated cadmium ...no better hook than a gama Sl 12 1x short..sticky, impossible to straighten..ive literally had permit straighten that sc 15 and due to the tarpons morphology..id tie the bunny strip upside down so he can actually see it...
