TWW | HTV (Harlech) - The ITV Network | The Ident Review Extra

The ITV Network: Part 17 - TWW / HTV (Harlech)
Our journey through the ITV Network continues here on the Ident Review Extra! This time around, we're doing a double whammy as we take a look at the evolution of franchise holders and idents in Wales and the West! Join me as we look through the short lived TWW, it's replacement in Harlech, and its shortened successor, HTV!
The Ident Review Extra began in the April of 2020 and covered all of the idents seen on BBC2 during the 1990's and early 2000's. After a Christmas runs in December, the series has had a long rest. But now it's back, taking a trip through all the different regions of the ITV Network!

    Watching and listening to those early TWW and HTV idents transported me straight back to being a child in Gloucestershire in the early sixties and gave me goosebumps, I hadn’t heard them since, thank you! As an aside, we used to call TWW “Telly Welly Welly”, though I’ve no idea how widespread that was. TonyS

    My patch (West)! I still can't get over how good the CG is in the 1992 era. It looks so much more modern than the gold/blue one that followed (although gold/blue era is my favourite for nostalgia reasons. Lasted my entire high school era. I hear that piano sting and I immediately feel like I'm about to watch Home and Away). It was quite sad when the last few idents before the generic ITV ones came in were cheaply produced in-house. Even as a kid I couldn't get over how cheap they looked - just panning/zooming around a logo with a colour scheme that hurt my eyes. The last two logos were BOTH visible on their Bristol studios for the longest time and every time I see them it takes me back to walking down Bath Road and the couple of times I was lucky enough to visit the studios. On an unrelated note the Bath Road studios in Bristol are one of the few original studios still in use by ITV (The main large studio was converted in to the news room with studio within during the late 90s, and the last studio was finally converted in to offices last year sadly)

    It's no wonder TWW just called it a day and didn't carry on to the end of its franchise period. It took on Teledu Cymru after that went bust, was investing in new studios and colour and the ITA didn't take any of that into account. Yet again the ITA (later the IBA) proving to the government that they did do something.

    TWW were unwilling to move their headquarters from London, to the region(s), they served. The ITA were quite hot on franchise holders being based within their regions; something the IBA later took to it's logical conclusion, by insisting that regional contractors also have their production facilities inside their franchise areas.

    The animated version of the HTV "aerial" logo first appeared in the spring of 1973. The colour of the logo was at first a very pale yellow which became white in the late 70s.

    It wasn't my region (I was in the Granada area), but HTV is probably my favourite of all the ITV station idents of the 70s when I was growing up..... that music is absolutely amazing. It gave me a whole new appreciation of hearing the music set against the original Harlech ident..... the visuals hurt my eyes but I absolutely love the music. You must tell the tale of the time between TWW and Harlech and why neither branding was used and what was used! Please!! Top video! 😊🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

    On the coast of North Wales our main outdoor aerial was pointed toward Winter Hill. We got excellent reception of Granada. HTV Wales could be received clearly on an indoor aerial. So I had a choice of region and could compare. Personally I preferred Granada presentation apart from their static idents, the continuity announcers were great (Colin Weston in particular). HTV did have a homely feel but not being a Welsh speaker I got put off with the presenters repeating everything in both languages, which only changed when S4C came along.

    I've been waiting for this one as HTV Cymru Wales used to be my local station. My favourite is the original aerial ident as that was the one I saw most when I was growing up. The 1987 ident is really good but something about the previous ident's animation means it takes the top spot. Apologies if you know this but didn't mention it, Teledu Cymru was originally a separate company for North and parts of West Wales. From what I can tell, their ident was the dragon with Teledu Cymru underneath. The company failed due to reasons I won't go into here and TWW took over the service broadcasting on the original transmitters plus Channel 7 from St Hilary. The original TWW service continued on Channel 10. Even after TWW took over the service it had separate continuity announcers and presentation.

    I remember that gold one weird subconscious nostalgia I don't know why I don't remember the later ones maybe we were all too busy watching satellite TV I remember thinking why isn't everything the same now I can appreciate the local charm. When you're a kid travelling around everything seems so big so when you turn on the telly and the presentation is different it feels weird now it's basically disappeared for the most part in England I think the genericness is one of the things Killing TV. BBC ALBA and BBC Cymru were two of the last TV channels I remember having interest in before losing interesting TV completely this channel is weirdly nostalgic it makes me miss things I didn't like at the time lol.

    This ident review of HTV was awesome! And don't confuse the "Harlech" name with "Harley". Anyway, some idents from HTV are pretty good, while the others are not. My favourite ident from HTV being the one used between 1987 and 1989, because the animation is absolutely fantastic. However, the 1968 ident looks more like an B&W acid trip, and is a big problem for those with headaches. But anyway, great ident review!

  • @sophie_drachen

    @sophie_drachen

    I think the reason why the 1968 ident/logo looks like an acid trip in black and white was because it was made for TVs that used to run in 405-line, most modern or modern for the eras after the sixties (well not 2022/23 with the tech we have now) would have been 625-line.

    HTV actually called themselves Carlton at one point! In the late 80s, the announcements were often broadcast out of vision from Wales, although they were able to provide split news and ads for the dual region! I reckon - despite my not being Welsh - S4C was probably the best thing to happen to Wales - prior to them being launched, non-Welsh speaking people couldn’t find much to watch, I think - imagine going on holiday to Colwyn Bay or Llandudno or Rhyl or Pwllheli and not being able to watch telly because everything was either in Welsh or, if you could get anything in English, it wasn’t worth bothering with - when S4C was launched, all Welsh language programmes decamped to there - BBC, HTV and independent productions - a nightmare once ITV Schools moved to Channel 4 - a lot of S4C opt-outs were BBC programmes - BBC on ITV - they broadcast some Channel 4 programmes (not always at the same time) and weren’t exclusively in Welsh to begin with, as not enough source material existed - probably was wiped or looked too old-fashioned - eventually, viewers in Wales could get proper Channel 4 and the need for S4C to broadcast their programmes was negated, allowing them more hours for Welsh language programmes - even immediately following the S4C launch, it allowed the BBC and HTV to broadcast entirely in English, whether from the networks or regional programmes in English - so us non-Welsh can see at least three channels in English if we went to Wales!

    Carlton bought the broadcasting arm of HTV from Granada in 2001 but retained the HTV name until the end of regional identities. The last set of idents used (2001-2002) were the same ones shown in other Carlton regions just with the different ending. Do you mean there might have been a pre-recorded continuity announcement that refereed to it as Carlton on occasion? That might be what you're thinking of.

  • @electragaming4140

    @@fiverZ Part-exchange, rather than a full buy out. Carlton inherited the 20% stake in Meridian Broadcasting, that Central had, and gifted it to Granada, along with a load of cash, in exchange for HTV. The idents were tweaked to reflect the change in ownership and I imagine a full rebrand would have been on the cards, but "de-regionalisation" got in the way and HTV went straight to "itv1", instead. As for the use of the Carlton name, on air, I suspect that was either an over eager announcer or (perhaps) continuity from another Carlton owned region.

  • @fiverZ

    @fiverZ

    @@electragaming4140 Yeah that's what I feel it was too. There would be little point changing the name to Carlton when Carlton and Granada were likely already planning the removal of regional names by that stage.
