Two Weasels in the house. Ermine Weasel - Weasel visit this morning - Seriously! What should I do?

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

This morning I was woken up by the feeling of pitter patter on my blankets over my feet. I don't have a cat, or any other pets for that matter. When my eyes opened I found two of these guys in my house. What do you think? They are some bold little buggers. Still trying to get them out of the house. #weasel #erminewease - Sailboat SV Pixiefish

They're called ermine, stoat or short tailed weasel. I had one in my house a couple years ago so I did some research..... They're pretty bold but also fairly friendly. If it's in your house It likely smelled a mouse or rat or other rodent. It will likely catch all your pests and move on. They are destructive though. The one I had made a 2'x2' hole in my drywall and made itself a nest in the wall. It stole one of my tuques to use as a bed. lol. I tried using fruits and veggies to trap it in a cage but it didn't work. As it turns out they ONLY eat meat. I tried using hot dogs but they're so light it didn't set off the trap. Eggs are one of their favorite foods. I put a raw egg still in the shell in the trap and with the extra weight of the egg he was caught. The next morning he was in the trap looking very sad and with a face covered in yolk. He didn't hiss or get aggressive....just sat there looking sad. I drove him 10 miles away and released him. As soon as I let him out of the cage he went straight for the car door to investigate the car. Cheeky monkey! I mean weasel. lol. Oh yeah....if you think you have one in your house close all the cupboards and drawers. They are known for hiding food for later. We found a dead mouse in the sewing machine table that he hid there for later. Even with all the drama it created I kinda miss the little guy. They are very cute.....but not a good pet. They will never identify you as their master or owner....they are very independent and usually live alone. If you had 2 of them they might have been younger siblings. If you want to see just how amazing they are at hunting check out some stoat videos. They can catch animals 10 times their size. Their absolutely fearless.

One of my friends awakened to the sound of skitter-skatter and found a young raccoon in the kitchen helping itself to the dry cat food. Seems the critter came in through the cat door and was still young/small enough to fit through it. My friend left it alone and it left once its tummy was full.

I wish I had an ermine where I live. All mice would be gone in short time. The only drawbacks are that stoats oftentimes kill for sport and will not take every mouse it kills back to its burrow. Meaning if the stoat kills a mouse for sport behind a wall or in a place that's inaccessible, the dead mouse would be left to rot. Another drawback about having a stoat would be that after it kills all of the mice in an area, it will then move on to squirrels, rabbits, and other small animals - including small kittens and puppies. Also, if anyone nearby raises chickens, that stoat would kill every chicken in the coup if given the opportunity. Another feature about ermines is that you really only can have them as pets while they're young. Once they mature, they will leave your house and will treat you as a stranger if you ever come across them again.

I know they’re extremely useful in ridding of rodents which we have tons of chipmunks, field mice and other pests that he or she will control. I went to my basement ( have to go thru garage to get down to basement) and was startled by noise in the trash. That’s when I saw it’s little white head and black beady eyes glare at me 🥺 I’ve been feeding it raw meat nightly to keep it around. I read they can live up to 5-6 years. @@brynmitchell5774 The thing about weasels not turning white in the winter is only partially correct. Specifically, it is true that the population of least weasels that live in the British Isles do not turn white, while (some of) the stoats do. However, whether they turn white or not depends a lot on climate and genetics, and least weasels living in other areas do indeed turn white. Also, stoats are a type of weasel, but the British "weasel" is specifically the least weasel, which adds to the confusion over names. Long-tailed weasels are a different species entirely from the least weasels and stoats that live in Europe. There are maybe 15-20 different species of weasels world wide (depending on exactly which ones you count. Maybe 10 species if you don't count the minks or the polecats or the ferrets), and the well known weasels and stoats of Europe are only two of them. I'm inclined to agree that the weasel is a long-tailed weasel rather than a short-tailed weasel (also known as an ermine or a stoat). Although it can be really hard to tell them apart in their winter coats - they're both pure white with black tail tips, and the tail lengths have some overlap, as is the case with the individual in the video - the weasel in the video looks a bit too big to be a stoat, and the head shape isn't quite right either.

Stoats are weasels, a weasel is any species of the genera Leucictis, Neogale, Ailurogale, Aciogale, Flavogale, Flavictis, Sciurogale, and Mustela, the latter genus containing the stoat, stoats are counted as weasels because the Stoat (Mustela Erminea) is the type species of the genus Mustela, weasels are a paraphyletic (informal) group because the species most often not considered weasels are ferrets (genera Neoputorius and Putorius) and minks (genera Neovison and Mesovison), in fact ferrets and minks are both polyphyletic groups because the Black-Footed Ferret (Neoputorius Nigripes) and American Mink (Neovison Vison) are more closely related to the weasels included within the genera Leucictis and Neogale, while the European Ferret (Putorius Putorius), Steppe Ferret (Putorius Eversmannii), and European Mink (Mesovison Lutreola) are more closely related to weasels included within the genera Ailurogale, Aciogale, Flavogale, Flavictis, Sciurogale, and Mustela Weasels: • Groups included: •• Genus: Leucictis (Haida Ermine) ••• Species: Leucictis Haidarum (Haida Ermine) •• Genus: Neogale (Alaska Weasel, American Ermine, Atlantic American Weasel, Long-Tailed Weasel, and South American Weasels) ••• Species: Neogale Eskimo (Alaskan Weasel) ••• Species: Neogale Richardsonii (American Ermine) ••• Species: Neogale Allegheniensis (Atlantic American Weasel) ••• Species: Neogale Frenata (Long-Tailed Weasel) ••• Species: Neogale Felipei (Colombian Weasel) ••• Species: Neogale Africana (Amazon Weasel) •• Genus: Ailurogale (Kolonoks) ••• Species: Ailurogale Sibirica (Siberian Weasel) ••• Species: Ailurogale Itatsi (Japanese Weasel) •• Genus: Aciogale (Black-Striped Weasel) ••• Species: Aciogale Strigidorsa (Black-Striped Weasel) •• Genus: Flavogale (Yellow-Bellied Weasel) ••• Species: Flavogale Kathiah (Yellow-Bellied Weasel) •• Genus: Flavictis (Malayan Weasel) ••• Species: Flavictis Nudipes (Malayan Weasel) •• Genus: Sciurogale (Mountain Weasels) ••• Species: Sciurogale Lutreolina (Indonesian Mountain Weasel) ••• Species: Sciurogale Altaica (Chinese Mountain Weasel) •• Genus: Mustela (Stoat, Least Weasel, Mediterranean Weasel, and African Weasels) ••• Species: Mustela Erminea (Stoat) ••• Species: Mustela Nivalis (Least Weasel) ••• Species: Mustela Numidica (Mediterranean Weasel) ••• Species: Mustela Subpalmata (Egyptian Weasel) ••• Species: Mustela Algeriensis (Northwest African Weasel) • Cladistically included but traditionally excluded taxa: •• Genus: Neoputorius (New World Ferrets) ••• Species: Neoputorius Nigripes (Black-Footed Ferret) •• Genus: Neovison (New World Minks) ••• Species: Neovison Vison (American Mink) •• Genus: Putorius (Old World Ferrets) ••• Species: Putorius Putorius (European Ferret) ••• Species: Putorius Eversmannii (Steppe Ferret) •• Genus: Mesovison (Old World Minks) ••• Species: Mesovison Lutreola (European Mink)

@@Keldor314 good summary. Yes, I have been in close contact with both species and can attest to the size difference as well as the difference in head shape. Until you see a stoat (short tailed weasel here in the US) one may not fully appreciate how tiny they are. Think of a tube of Crest toothpaste. The stoats here also have a triangular skull. Frenata (long tail) has a more rounded skull and face shape. The long tail also has larger, rounded ears that perk up quite a bit when they are curious. They more often get on hind legs and look around. Both do this to some extent. The long tail is more bold generally as well. It is at least twice as large as a short tail. When you see a short tail here they are often scurrying and don’t pop back out of their holes again for some time. Long tailed we weasels often drop into their burrows and almost immediately pop back up out of sheer curiosity. You can get quite close to a long tail. Of course, this is all generally speaking. Exceptions exist. There’s plenty of KZread evidence for these behaviors, if one would like to verify… I’m a weasel fanatic…

@bryn mitchell, stoats are weasels, a weasel is any species of the genera Leucictis, Neogale, Ailurogale, Aciogale, Flavogale, Flavictis, Sciurogale, and Mustela, the latter genus containing the stoat, stoats are counted as weasels because the Stoat (Mustela Erminea) is the type species of the genus Mustela, weasels are a paraphyletic (informal) group because the species most often not considered weasels are ferrets (genera Neoputorius and Putorius) and minks (genera Neovison and Mesovison), in fact ferrets and minks are both polyphyletic groups because the Black-Footed Ferret (Neoputorius Nigripes) and American Mink (Neovison Vison) are more closely related to the weasels included within the genera Leucictis and Neogale, while the European Ferret (Putorius Putorius), Steppe Ferret (Putorius Eversmannii), and European Mink (Mesovison Lutreola) are more closely related to weasels included within the genera Ailurogale, Aciogale, Flavogale, Flavictis, Sciurogale, and Mustela Weasels: • Groups included: •• Genus: Leucictis (Haida Ermine) ••• Species: Leucictis Haidarum (Haida Ermine) •• Genus: Neogale (Alaska Weasel, American Ermine, Atlantic American Weasel, Long-Tailed Weasel, and South American Weasels) ••• Species: Neogale Eskimo (Alaskan Weasel) ••• Species: Neogale Richardsonii (American Ermine) ••• Species: Neogale Allegheniensis (Atlantic American Weasel) ••• Species: Neogale Frenata (Long-Tailed Weasel) ••• Species: Neogale Felipei (Colombian Weasel) ••• Species: Neogale Africana (Amazon Weasel) •• Genus: Ailurogale (Kolonoks) ••• Species: Ailurogale Sibirica (Siberian Weasel) ••• Species: Ailurogale Itatsi (Japanese Weasel) •• Genus: Aciogale (Black-Striped Weasel) ••• Species: Aciogale Strigidorsa (Black-Striped Weasel) •• Genus: Flavogale (Yellow-Bellied Weasel) ••• Species: Flavogale Kathiah (Yellow-Bellied Weasel) •• Genus: Flavictis (Malayan Weasel) ••• Species: Flavictis Nudipes (Malayan Weasel) •• Genus: Sciurogale (Mountain Weasels) ••• Species: Sciurogale Lutreolina (Indonesian Mountain Weasel) ••• Species: Sciurogale Altaica (Chinese Mountain Weasel) •• Genus: Mustela (Stoat, Least Weasel, Mediterranean Weasel, and African Weasels) ••• Species: Mustela Erminea (Stoat) ••• Species: Mustela Nivalis (Least Weasel) ••• Species: Mustela Numidica (Mediterranean Weasel) ••• Species: Mustela Subpalmata (Egyptian Weasel) ••• Species: Mustela Algeriensis (Northwest African Weasel) • Cladistically included but traditionally excluded taxa: •• Genus: Neoputorius (New World Ferrets) ••• Species: Neoputorius Nigripes (Black-Footed Ferret) •• Genus: Neovison (New World Minks) ••• Species: Neovison Vison (American Mink) •• Genus: Putorius (Old World Ferrets) ••• Species: Putorius Putorius (European Ferret) ••• Species: Putorius Eversmannii (Steppe Ferret) •• Genus: Mesovison (Old World Minks) ••• Species: Mesovison Lutreola (European Mink)
