In this video I split two braids of Malabrigo Nube roving differently in order to see if the final three-ply yarns are different.

I would be disappointed with the amount of white fiber in those braids if I had bought a dark version. I dye my own

I was taught to steam top, this opens up a braid and reactivates any crimp. It's especially useful when the tip is compacted. Makes it easier to spin. Love the demo. Thankyou.

Thank you so much for sharing your experiment. I've never spun anything other than undyed fleece prepared by me, and I'm constantly tempted by all the lovely coloured rovings. I have procrastinated about the Malabrigo Nube a few times but have only ever seen it online and keep suffering 'buyers paralysis' - terrified of receiving something I just do not like. Your experiment has decided me once and for all - I won't spent my very limited budget on it. I would have been in tears at seeing all that white on the inside, and my heart would have broken to find it felted in places. Thank you so much for saving my money and my heart. I am curious to see how that yarn knitted up so I'll keep watching and hope to find the episode where you used it.

Thank you for doing this. As a relatively new spinner, this was so helpful to both. Understand how to divide a roving as well as the differences when you divide it differently. I am very interested in your d Iy lazy kate. Do you have a pattern for it or did you find one online. Thanks again.

What spinning wheel do you use? What do you recommend for a new spinner and which of your videos would be best for new folks?

Hi Kimberly: I have a Ladybug (from Schacht) You have likely heard that wheel choice is a very personal thing. They come in all shapes and sizes. I really enjoyed this post from Abby when i was trying to decide which wheel I was going to try: abbysyarns.com/2008/12/choosing-your-first-spinning-wheel/ The nice thing about the Ladybug is that it's in the mid-range in terms of price--still expensive, but it's a quality wheel. I went for the double treadle as a beginner and I think it helped immensely. Now, I would prefer to spin on a single treadle (I have some back pain issues with sitting and keeping both feet moving off the ground--old martial arts injuries live on!). If you can, the best idea is to visit a shop or a fiber show that sells wheels and try them out. You may like the castle wheels, but you may also like the more traditional cinderella wheels. I had an Ashford basic model for a while and rehabbed it. It was OK, but it just wasn't for me; same with a Kromski that I tried. So here are some of the big things to think about/look for: single vs double treadle castle vs traditional how adjustable it is in terms of spinning fine to chunky yarn (some are more limited) height and size of the orifice--if you're into chunky or art yarn this can matter a lot height of the wheel itself--ergonomically, does it work for your body? cost--there are some wheels, like the Babe that are less expensive, but I have not spun on them travel--do you need a lighter wheel? what kind of tensioning mechanism it uses (bobbin, Irish, etc) I hope that helps!
