The white gloves... are they to keep things more clean and to keep the oil from your hands off of the leather and waxed thread? I ask because no matter how often I wash my hands, the white thread I use always looks a little dirty by the time I am done saddle stitching.

I discovered a way to stitch with less time/effort. I put the right-hand needle and thread through first, pulling almost all the way tight leaving a small loop just big enough to pinch. Left-hand needle goes through next, "casting" as per usual for a locking stitch, again leaving a small loop just big enough to pinch. The critical step to achieve an aesthetic "slant" on both sides of the piece: you must grab the small loops on each side and pull them down with a little wiggle for good measure. Pull tight - et voilà No stupid awl, no fighting the leather to put the left-side needle in first. On small pieces with short thread I can do a saddle stitch in 6 seconds - 10 stitches a minute.
