My father was only 19 when he was sent to Luzon in the Philippines during WWII. He returned thin, worn and changed. Back then, you didn't have PTSD, you just sucked it up and kept going. Haunted by what he had seen and done, he turned to drink. When I was born, he was a full-fledged alcoholic, abuser and chronically unemployed. He died of liver failure at only 34 years of age. I still carry the broken bones and scars he gave me, as well as the mental and emotional scars of a child that didn't understand. Flash forward twenty years, Vietnam and then Desert Storm. Against my family's wishes, I joined the military and It was my turn to face the limits of my humanity and courage. I too killed, and cried and lay awake at night staring into the darkness. I could have easily become him, but I managed to hold onto myself through the love of others and the faith and loyalty of my comrades. I was one of the lucky ones. In the end, I made the military my career, returned to college and earned my PhD and proudly wear my Vietnam/Desert Storm hat with my decorations everywhere I go. Do I hate my father for what he became? No. Not anymore. Many in WWII were killed, and many others broken beyond repair. It took me facing the same horror and conflict that he experienced for me to understand. While I may never be able to love you Dad, at least now, I understand you. Rest in peace, your namesake (your Grandson), would have made you proud, as I have always hoped that I could have. 570

@Stipe Vucenovic Thank you for your kind comments. Being a young soldier, I would like to give you a small piece of advice. Being a soldier, in some ways, is like being a weapon. What you do can be in the name of good, or evil. Always strive to champion the good, and you will inherit the honor that so many warriors before you bequeath to you. God Bless and Keep You Safe.

A wonderful confession, were it not for the heroic American soldiers, communism or some other totalitarian system would reign everywhere. You can be proud of your dad, although he caused you a lot of pain, he went through a lot of pain himself, and because he was sensitive, he reacted. May God forgive him all this and bring peace and relief to your family.

Hi Daniel, it is difficult for a non-military person to even try to understand what being a soldier means. I do know from experience though that somehow, the suffering of your father has been injected into you, and you are dealing with it, whether you want it or not; it is part of you. My grandfather was killed in WWII at the age of 29, and my dad has been suffering from not knowing that man for his entire life. He was only 4 years old back then, so he has almost no memory, if any at all, but his picture is in his wallet and on his bedroom drawer, and pretty much the first thing he sees each day when he wakes up. I have been trying to get him to talk about what the heck is bothering him for a long time, because I really hated to see him so sad, but these older generations are so damn stubborn and they just won't say anything. I am glad to hear that there are people like you who have managed to stay away from the dark side, so to speak. And let's hope that something like a World War never, ever happens again.

We're not heroes, the real heroes never came home. We're just survivors, living day to day, always thinking of the brothers whom gave us everything, life included. We're just men, ashamed of the fact that the best of us sacrificed themselves and their families to get us to today. We're just soldiers, reliving the wars of yesterday and praying for a brighter tomorrow. We're just shells of who we used to be, as part of us died with them, our brothers and sisters, our best friends, our saviors. We're not heroes & we're not made of stone, we are humans. The true heroes, never came home.

Bless you... most American's, from a not-too-distant-past, were drafted to fight. Nonetheless, draftee or volunteer, our wives sacrificed every bit as much as their husbands. Keeping a family together, never knowing, coping day-to-day in a life without their spouse... a combat veteran's wife is a special woman.

My Uncle Ray was 25 and working for the Chicago and Northwestern, was married, when Pearl Harbor was attacked. Yet he joined the Army December 8, 1941. He was put into Army anti-aircraft and was sent to New Guinea to help the Anzacs to push the Japanese out. For this he was awarded the Bronze Star. Jump two years when he landed in the Philippines. With the Japanese Air Force wiped out his battery was sent out on "search and destroy" missions, sent after pockets of resistance the infantry had missed. One day his squad, led by a Filipino lieutenant, was pinned down. The Filipino was hit, and Uncle Ray went out, on his own, to rescue the man under heavy enemy fire. For this action Uncle Ray was given the Silver Star. Uncle Ray was a quiet man, one who never spoke of his exploits, that is, until he met his nephew. He talked to me, but not Aunt Florence, relieving the long suppressed stress and telling of himself of long ago, when he and his generation were truly giant killers. Uncle Ray died in 1991, knowing that he was held as a hero by a young nephew. Thank you Uncle Ray, for standing at the plate and for you extraordinary service to our country.

But, everyone have to agree that this country gave the ultimate sacrifice to the world history. I don't really care of how these conflict emerged. But US has sacrificed thousands or perhaps hundreds of thousands of life's of their children to end the war and bring peace. And as i see the pics of the video, they just do their jobs and may God bless them.

It is that time of year when the nights grow dark and I am dragged back to the places in my memory that I dont wish to go. I know I must go though, if I dont then the ones that fell in those places will be alone, they are my brothers and I owe it to them to revisit my past. I am only 55 yet I feel so fragile now that I simply cannot identify with the young man that I was. I stand at ease and gaze at my Lee Teter print of "Reflections" and it reminds me of just how lucky I am. No matter how low I have felt in my life, I am lucky. Some were not. I have lost more friends to suicide than on the two way range. My family and friends think I am something I am not. I love them but they don't know me. No heroes here, just a foolish man who was lucky to serve with some heroes for 22 years. Rest easy brothers and see you in Valhalla where we can unpack silk at 650 and laugh at the devil as he stands to attention.

I am from Germany. I know that my fighting ancestors were the bad guys. My grandfather was KIA during the Battle of Kursk in Russia, in 1943. My grandmother never ever talked about him. Not a word. When she died, 69 years later, we cleaned up her apartment and found the goodbye letter my grandfather had on him when he was killed. She had kept it hidden all that time. I wanted to know who that man was, so I sent a request to the army archive in Berlin. Some of you may know the movie 'Music Box', so I figured, whatever he did, I want to know it. The army kept very good records about each soldier, so I got his file. He was in the 73rd tank regiment. At some point, Hitler ordered them to free the 6th army, who was trapped in Stalingrad. About 20 miles away from the city, they had to retreat. The Battle of Kursk was supposedly the turning point of the war. He was killed by a Russian sniper on July 15, and buried somewhere near Belgorod in Russia. When the German army retreated, they flattened all cemeteries because they did not want the Red Army to desecrate them. I (sort of) geolocated the gravesite by doing research in Russian archives. There is an organization that locates the remains of soldiers and reburies them elsewhere. My father does not want me to tell them where he is, he says: he has been there for more than 80 years, let him stay there forever. Either way, I always have had deep respect for the allied forces, and for the sacrifices they made. This song is a fitting tribute !

My back is covered in scars from those who have turned on me, as I have turned to face the onslaught for them. I am cursed, hated, feared… not because of who I am at home but rather who I am at war. I am a Warrior, solid, unbreakable. Yet inside the cracks of grief and pain are deep and true. The hand that deals death to those who wish my country dead grips tight the hand of those who go before into the great beyond. Sleep well brothers, we have it from here…”

Ashoka: Although his Ashoka formally believed in Buddhism, it did not discriminate against other religions. What he opposed was everything that violated moral principles, and morality is the essence of all religions. So he never opposed theists, Brahmins and other religions. He still has a previous religious attitude of "respecting the gods." He still treats Brahmins very generously, often giving them a large number of gifts, correcting the same as Ajivikas, a believer of Gosala. The Ashoka specifically represents the common essence of religion and prevents all factions from speaking against each other to produce adverse results. This is an administrative unit that manages not only Buddhism, but also all religions, and even Jainism also includes internal . . Although he himself believes in the teachings of Buddha; prays to Buddhist prayers; respects the three treasures of Buddhism; abides by the obedience of Buddha's return; close to Buddhist Sangha; strengthens the Buddhist community, but he never encourages anyone to believe in any particular denomination. He had declared before the masses that no matter sambodhi or Nirvana, they were all Svarga and returned to the Devas. As long as everyone abides by traditional rituals, does not care about the narrow doctrines of various ministries, and practices general religious ceremonies, whether high or low, everyone can enter heaven. These traditional common rules are: "respect parents; Obey the rule; Friendly animal Obey morality Speak honestly. Respect teacher; Treat your relatives and friends kindly. Are you filial and obedient? Is it polluting and sinful? He has another The famous stone pillar published on the root: "Seeing your spiritual depth. "Afterwards, Ashoka seemed to believe that the effect of introspection is greater than the form of scientific research; but people must also be restrained in a moral form in the early stage before they can internally introspect. Ashoka was a man of words and deeds, and he even did what he said. He was kind and generous, so he pushed his own things and asked the people not to imprison animals and to kill them. Even if the animal is sick, he also stipulates that he does not kill. The royal food of Ashoka is also purely vegetarian, and the royal family's hunting in the forest has also been cancelled. Religious sacrificial sacrifices of animals are also ordered to be banned, so as not to kill life or to reduce human virtue due to killing. Not only to establish hospitals for people; but also to establish poultry and veterinary hospitals. On Tongqu Avenue, his local officials set up tea stations and planted trees at the tea stations for passengers to rest. He often sends officials from the royal palace to various places...
