TWO RULES of Slip Stitch Knitting Every Knitter Should Know!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Slip stitch knitting is a fabulous technique that creates some unique fabric characteristics. There are only two rules that are necessary for understanding how slip-stitch knitting works:
1. Stitches should be slipped purlwise (or 'as if to purl')
2. Yarn can be held to the front OR to the back of the work
To slip a stitch purlwise, insert the right needle into the first stitch on the left needle as if you're going to purl the stitch. But instead of purling, slip the stitch from the left needle to the right needle.
Depending on the slip-stitch pattern, yarn can be held to the front or to the back of the work. The thing to remember is this instruction is related to where the yarn is in relation to you and whichever side of the knitted fabric is facing you. Even if the wrong side of the work is facing you, if the pattern says 'with yarn in front' the yarn should be brought to the side that is facing you.
Knitting patterns may include any of the following abbreviations as it relates to where the yarn is held:
* If the yarn is held to the front - wyif (with yarn in front), yf (yarn forward), wyf (with yarn forward)
* If the yarn is held to the back - wyib (with yarn in back), yb (yarn back), wyb (with yarn back)

Have you knit any projects that used slipped stitches to create the design? Tell me about it!

I am knitting a sock now with the signature "gingerbread" colourway and I want some sort of design. So I am going to do a 2 row repeat Row 1- knit Row 2- *K3,Sl1,* But came looking to see if slipping purlwise or knitwise would make it pop out more !

Thank you! I was looking at a pattern and wasn't sure which slip stitch was meant. This answered my question I think 😊

Some people are visual learners, some are trial and error learners... I'm a need to know learner. I recently started to learn to knit by means of watching tutorials and even though they were labeled as beginners everytime a KZreadr said then slip this stitch and just kept going I'd stop and say but why? What does it do? It was so frustrating having to stop and then search for the "why"... So I just put everything aside and decided to learn the reasons why do any stitch, how to decrease increase, etc and then return to the so called "beginners" tutorial to finally begin to practice. It's just the way my brain works 🤷🏽‍♀️😂
