Two NEW Film Stocks From Film Ferrania

Ойын-сауық

We may be about to get two brand new film stocks. Well maybe not brand new - Film Ferrania is reportedly about to bring back two more black and white films from its past.
On Film Ferrania’s instagram they made a post referring to unannounced P33, and P36 films. These are higher speed black and white films that would exist in the company’s lineup alongside Film Ferrania’s P30. Film photography has been on the ropes at times over the past decade, and anytime we get new films - it’s exciting!
Thanks so much for watching.

Black and white is so much simpler to produce than color that I'm hoping they are focusing on this in order to help fund the production costs of more sophisticated stocks later on. At the very least, extremely low iso black and white stocks are pretty unusual (especially at this price) so they are still filling a market niche.

I welcome any new B&W film, but I totally agree, a new colour reversal film, or a new colour negative film for that matter, would be even more welcome... Well, let's hope that Ferrania will be able to produce a new colour film with the proceedings of the sales of their B&W films. I think Adox is already taking that road

Adox and Ferrania both took old assets and tried to resurrect them. Adox built a new facility and moved the equipment there, Ferrania tried to start up an old factory. Well, from broken pipes to frazzled utilities, Ferrania has had to spend too much money just to accomplish being two years behind! The Italian government is helping them as a potential jobs program so hopefully they will work through everything. If you remember the old TV show, "Green Acres", the Italian factory will rival the old farmhouse where it was always something.

I think the industry is really riding on Adox and Ferrania to make color film on a decently large scale happen. With 2 more companies with color coating capabilities that means smaller companies who have ideas for color film can see their projects come to life as well. Even Polaroid stands to benefit from this. they can really improve their product if they can work with more scientists around Europe to improve instant film

P30 is unique and wonderful, I love the contrast and the depth in the dark grays and blacks. The grain is also silky smooth, shooting it in medium format is a rare treat, but it’s not for the faint of heart, it’s latitude is very limited, so it’s important to take the time to learn the stock.

I was lucky enough to snag 2 rolls of p30 last year from a local photo lab, only shot one roll so far. Its a very smooth grain film with insanely high contrast, almost too much (and i like high contrast b&w).

@Overexposed1 I say go for it if you get the chance! It's close to jch400 in tone/contrast just obv with less grain.

Ferrania should be careful because they shouldn't be surprised if CineStill sends them a "courtesy" letter telling Ferrania that Cinestill has already trademarked numbers with a letter and P30 might get confused with 800T in the minds of us idiot photographers that they want to rip off with hiogh prices Seriously, good on Ferrania, actually making film, and giving us more choice.

I have around 200 rolls of both P-30 and Orto in stock. Don's Used Photo Equipment. It is on the Great Wall of Film. But I don't really do shipping since I am about the only person working so hard to get to UPS.

Since an E6 type colour reversal film is at its heart a B&W film, this may mean they are actively experimenting with a variety of reversal emulsions in their effort to get a decent reversal colour film.

I forget how much money I lost on the kickstarter. You mentioned someone got a discount coupon. We were promised those if we requested one. Many did, but that is the only one I ever heard of actually showing up. Of course, it’s a hearsay coupon at this point. I shot a roll of the P30, very contrasty developed in HC-110. Not my thing, but at least someone got a benefit.

If they can pull off a similar quality as with the P30, P33 and P36 would have their place in the B&W film market. Color reversal film would not be what I'm after (even though I did back their Kickstarter campaign), but rather C-41, as it is far easier to shoot and process.

What would be pretty cool is if they made a colour film that can be cross processed in either E6 or C-41, similar to Washi X.

At photographic school we learned about emulsion chemistry. Despite decades of manufacturer's research, I still wonder if there is some emulsion technology that's undiscovered? Maybe quantum nano-particles in stead of dyes to sensetise emulsions to various light wavelengths? It would be nice for a return to making prints in the darkroom, on an enlarger - not scanning negatives to make inkjet prints ot what ever. Photography is a great hobby, though from experience as a professional all my life, tough for making a living!

I really like your videos, I quite agree with you on the disappointment of not having a reversible film from Ferrania. But... to live between Europe and Canada, you don't easily find European films in USA, just like you don't find many European cars in USA... B&W film that has to cross the ocean must be great or very affordable, otherwise itsn't worth it financially.

The reason Ferrania is able to keep in business is because instead of shipping all their film halfway across the world for B&H to stock, they send seemingly the vast majority to their EU and UK stockists, for instance I have an easier time getting Ferrania P30 right now than I am Kodak Ultramax or Colorplus. The only colour films I'm able to regularly get is Gold, Ektachrome, Vision 3 and it's derivatives and of course Ektar (Portra is wayyyy too expensive where I am for what it is) while Ferrania P30 is in a steady stream that is in stock much more often.

for answering how ferrania is possibly still working, i heard a lot of photographers from the US that are not able to find easy the P30 and the Orto film, i'm from italy and some friends around europe aswell are very able to get easly the P30, i would suppose it's mostly cause it's more profitable for them to keep a proper market in the EU and send less stock to the US, that's my only assumption, but ferrania had a lot of issues for then working and starting up the machines, i would love to see their color film back, and i wanna hope they will bring them back, but ferrania here is working quite well for sales of film, i know quite few film shooters that for sunny days rather shoot the P30 to the FP4 for example, or other famous B&W film stocks too, so i suppose that's how it goes?

'North American', I thought they spoke English over there, but apparently they have an entire open language? 🤭 I bought a roll of P30 en Orto like a month ago. Haven't shot it yet. I want to get a roll of it in 120 too, but couldn't find it in stock anywhere.
