    I have a QL17 GIII and I love it. Very compact camera, excellent fast lens, bright RF patch (at least on mine) and you'll need a camera thirty years newer to be any easier to load. The only thing cameras like Contax/Kiev and Leica have over it is the ability to change lenses.

    This was the first good camera that I bought in Hong Kong when I was a student back in 1977. Used it and loved it through to 1996 when it was stollen at Heathrow airport. Many years later I found a Konica Auto S2 camera at a Tokyo thrift store. It is larger than the Canon but has many common features and the Hexanon lens is incredible. It quickly became my favorite film camera and is what I would use now if I were still shooting film.

    Enjoyed your walk in Golden Gate Park. It changed a lot since my days there in the 40’s 50’s and 60’s. Used to go to the Japanese Tea Garden and Stowe Lake many times. Had the ql17, sold it, many regrets. Thanks again for your very interesting posts.

    Great photos. This camera was my first "good" camera and now all these years later and fully realizing how good it was. I miss shooting with it. I've been looking to buy one, but I have so many other cameras and my new favorite the Rollei 35S needs to be repaired, so buying a Canon QL 17 isn't in the cards right now.

    I like that when you test a camera you really show a lot of shots. Not just 2 or 3. I really like the tunnel shot with the girl walking but several were really good. I picked up my QL17 GIII for $20. Finally had it resealed and your video inspired me to get out and test it.

    A very much underrated camera. I have one of these and a range of their 48mm. filters. The shutter as you rightly point out is amazingly quiet. The leather case is real leather which has a classy look . Probably one of my favourite cameras along with my half/frame Olympus Pen S which sadly no longer works.

    Let me describe the 40mm for you, it's the perfect "normal" lens. A 36x24 frame has a diagonal of roughly 43mm. A normal lens for any format is considered a lens with focal length equal to the diagonal of the frame. 40mm is very close to the 43mm diagonal, so it is very close to the perfect "normal" lens. Also it is considered that perfect "normal" lenses tend to produce the most "cinematic" shots, so a 40-45mm lenses are indeed the best, and the images they take tend to evoke the most "cinematic" experience in the audience. That is why most fixed lens rangefinders tend to have a 40-45 mm lens. I, myself, am in the hunt of a Konica Auto S1.6, but if I'm not lucky and able to find a copy of the Konica, I'll go the Canon QL17 route, too.

    hi! not sure if you will see this, but i wanted to ask! i want to shoot portraits with a good blur let's say f2.8 with 200 iso film and 250 shutter, but wouldnt that make my photo too bright? since aperture not only affects depth of field but also brightness? hope u can answer bc im scared my film might come out blank or too bright :

  • @michaeldimmitt2188

    @michaeldimmitt2188

    Жыл бұрын

    Hello Empty. I am guessing by “a good blur” you are talking about the background behind your subject being out of focus, or commonly referred to as bokeh. With your lens set to maximum aperture and your subject near the minimum focus length your lens can focus, you will absolutely get “a good blur”. The further away from your lens the subject is (and refocused) the less blurry the background will get. So if you are doing a headshot, you will be close enough so that the face fills the frame and there should be a very blurred background. If you are shooting from the waist to the top of the head, you will back away to fit what you want in frame (and refocus) and this will change the bokeh to a less blurry version. Head to toe shot will decrease the blurriness even more. Does that make sense?

    Sorry I'm new to photography, but what's the point of adding the light meter if the range finder has no settings?

  • @getjcn

    @getjcn

    Жыл бұрын

    It is a fully mechanical camera that you can adjust all settings on. The point of the meter on top is because the built in meter requires a mercury battery (which aren't made anymore). Even with adapters the old meters on simple cameras like this were not wildly accurate anyway. The meter on top allows him to not have to use a hand held meter or meter app on his phone. Hope this helps :)

    Nothing you can't change with white balance (color tempertaure and tint sliders in any photo software). Here it's either an issue with the scan, or an artistic choice.

  • @stratocactus

    @stratocactus

    @@kimwilliamjustice6945 keep in mind what comes out of camera is the negative. The scan and positive inversion process are an interpretation of the negative. Colour balance and shift are highly due to that process. And then comes the edition of it. So there's no such thing IMHO as "straight out of camera" look for film photography. It all boils down to how you make the digital positive from your negative. Even when going through RA-4 (analog printing) you can drastically change the look of a photo by changing exposure, colour temp, and tint (colour enlargement with a colour head comprises of 3 filters : Cyan, magenta, yellow. Use those 3 (actually you use only 2 at a time) to correct the colours).
