    As is the case for rich people who become more and more disconnected from reality the longer they are rich, deluding themselves that the world is a meritocracy. It's like the Paul Piff monopoly experiment (also discussed in a Ted talk) where he had pairs of students play an obviously rigged game of monopoly where one player started out with more money and got to roll 2 dice instead of one, allowing them to move around the board faster. After the game, when the students who inevitably won were asked why they had won, they ALL talked about the smart moves they made and the strategies they employed. None of them acknowledged the head start and blatant advantages they were given.

    I am amazed how intelligent they are. The one who gets the cucumber actually bangs it against the wall, testing it, because she thinks there must be something wrong with it for getting cucumber instead of grapes. So her rock must be lacking in quality according to her thoughts. Thats an insanely high level of intelligence for me. Crazy. Being able to identify the inequality, being able to understand that this must have a cause, and trying to find it. And im not sure that she tests it, maybe shes showing it to the doctor like "see, my stone is as good too, gimme grapes!" Just awesome and crazy.

    Similar to humans being passed for promotions, being paid less, or not being given a raise or bonus, some will attribute it to their own short coming. It's a mentality that is pervasive in America, the idea that you are in complete control of your destiny and not a monkey inside of a cage who will get cucumbers no matter what you do because that is the life you were born into while the monkey next to you will have to do nothing and always get grapes.

    I work in a nursing home as a CNA (Nursing assistant) and get paid slightly above minimum wage. The place I work is in desperate need of CNAs to care for the patients, so they brought in registry CNAs to fill in. These registry CNAs we’re getting between $26-$28 an hour while the regular employees get paid $16. Needless to say, we asked for equal pay in which they replied, “you agreed to your current pay when you signed the contract.” Well guess what? Many of the CNAs quit and the Nursing home was filled with registry CNAs who were not accustom to the policy while getting paid quite nicely (if they just paid their employees the same rate, they wouldn’t need registry CNAs). The place has not fully recover and their 5* rating dropped to a 2. I won’t be surprise if the place close down.

It was a management decision and they made the wrong decision and the patients suffered. I don’t exactly understand why the people getting paid more could at least do the level of work that the lower paid employees were capable of. Even if they quit and went to another job, paying exactly the same amount of money because that’s what the industry was paying that outcome would be better than staying at the same job, knowing that someone doing the same work as you were getting paid double amount of money that you were getting paid especially after asking for an increase in pay. That’s intolerable because of one’s sense of fairness has been violated.

    @@_IcyCube_ except its not cheating... if you agree to work at a wage then thats that. No one is forcing you to do it its not soviet Russia if you feel you can sell your labor for more then go do it no one is stopping you. Plus this line of thought completely ignores the biggest reason for wage dissparity which is competency and reliability. If you and i both work at the same job for a year and you show up everyday and allways do a good job but i call out and do an average job and then our reviews go around we both come up for raises and you get a dollar and i dont then is it unfair that we have a different wage? Of course this can be used to take advantage of people like only giving white employees raises simply because theyre white or men simply because theyre men without giving consideration to the quality of their work this is illegal and has serious consequences if proven to be true. But to assume that all wage disparities are results of inherit biases or discrimination is not only false but dangerous misinformation.

    My wife kept insisting I go to the company we sub-contracted with and demand more money. My gut instinct said not to. We were making very, very good money and I didn’t want to jeopardize that. We didn’t know what the others sub-contractors were making but I was ok with the gamble. She was sure we were getting “cheated” so after six months of this I brought it up. It was embarrassing. I originally negotiated the contract with us being paid at the top of the industry standard. They were ok to keep paying it because we were their best sub. Our renegotiation meeting was overheard by another sub who pitched a fit. It didn’t matter that we did a better job and had no returns to fix mistakes or damage. They didn’t bring the other subs to our pay scale, nay, nay! WE got lowered to everyone else’s pay. I should have followed my instincts!!! It cost us more than $300k over the course of three years. If you’re doing good and are happy shut up and earn your pay. Too many employees waste their employers time and money complaining to their co-workers who really don’t want to hear their whining! After the Crash of ‘07-‘08 we were the last subs contract to be canceled. We stayed their best and it paid off in the end. It just would have been nice to have had the extra pile cash .💰

Also maybe those other recruits were more experienced for the job and had more time in the field. Maybe they had a better education. There are a lot of different things that companies look at for hiring and pay. We're not going to pay someone off the street with no experience the same that we'll pay for years of prior experience, training, or education (depending on the job) It's on you to negotiate for a better wage during the interview and if you don't do that the hiring manager isn't going to just offer more than base pay.

Someone got hired for an admin role - basic admin that requires no training or experience. They were on 30k more than me. I was so furious, I stopped caring about my job and quit soon after. I managed to land myself a new job doing the same thing, I took a minor pay cut - but the director chose to raise the wages of all his other senior staff, as my wage was higher than theirs by about 10k-15k. I immediately accepted the role when he told me that because it shows he treats people fairly. My old workplace was toxic with an abusive boss, but it was a good lesson for me not to obsess over my work - and not waste time at places where you’re treated unfairly,

    I did my internship with a psychiatrist that had a monkey & it went everywhere with him, including the office. I did this little trick where I had a banana chip up my sleeve and I would rub my hands, clap them together and make the chip appear. I then gave it to the monkey. After doing this for a while it became an every morning ritual. When other people in the office were out of treats, the monkey understood they don't have one to give to him. Well, the first morning I showed up with no banana chip, he grabbed my hands and rubbed them together, then made my hands clap, then he checked for a banana chip. No chip. He then did the motions with his hands as if telling me to do it. I did it but still no chip. He got angry at me. He didn't understand I didn't have a chip to give him because, over time, he believed I could make one appear at will. He didn't understand I didn't have any, he just thought I was being mean. lol I used my lunch hour to go buy banana chips.

When Todo (the monkey) was in trouble the Dr. would point at him and say your a bad boy. Todo copied that gesture and if he was mildly angry, or irritated with someone, he would point and shake his finger at you. It was hilarious but if you laughed he realized you were laughing at him and then he would go into a fit. If he was really angry, he would just pitch a fit. He would jump around, shake things, scream, sometimes he would slap the desk or table in front of you. Even well behaved monkeys pitch a fit on occasion, I mean, they are monkeys. The Dr. called it a "proper monkey fit". Give him a few mins and throw raisins in the room. The complimentary experiment should be asking the first monkey to deliver 2 rocks for a red grape and then giving a red grape to the second monkey for delivering just one rock. I wonder how soon or even if the first monkey would realize they're getting paid only half of what the second monkey is getting paid. Good stuff indeed.

    I do understand the point you are making here, but ultimately what would these experiments do to further the knowledge and are they really necessary? Because we already know that capuchin monkeys have a sense of fairness and unfairness through these experiments, we would not need an additional experiment that confirms this sense but uses a more complex setup than this one. The monkeys would show the same reaction, they would get aggitated and we'd have the same result as in the first experiment without finding something new.

  • @adday3006

    @adday3006

    @@jayer. It's about as enlightening as an experiment that shows the innate desire for fairness. In this experiment, Left Monkey realizes that he's getting unequal reward for the same work and gets upset. Right Monkey is completely fine with this new system. Well, what if Right Monkey has to complete the task three times in order to get cucumber? Does Right Monkey get upset at the increased workload? What if Right Monkey has to complete the task three times but gets a grape afterwards? Does Left Monkey get upset with the reward? What happens when Right Monkey has to complete a task that Left Monkey hasn't been trained to do? Does Left Monkey only react to the reward, without considering the training or difficulty of the task? IMO, equal reward for equal work is only half the issue, and the other half is more indicative of the real world, where all but a few people are performing tasks that are different from us.

    @@champspec you have so little knowledge of economics that is not even funny. I strongly suggest you read some Adam Smith to brush up on free market Capitalism and then understand why you are wrong in multiple levels by reading/listening to Michael Parenti or Richard Wolff, there are many others but, IMO, they have the most simple way to tackle these subjects.
