Two Illinois paramedics charged with murder after patient dies

First-degree murder charges have been filed against two Illinois paramedics. An autopsy says a man they treated died from "asphyxia due to prone facedown restraint" on the paramedics' stretcher. The family of the victim sat down with CBS Chicago’s Charlie De Mar for their first TV interview.

I've been a paramedic for the last 33 years and I've never even heard of a patient being treated like this. That is your patient, your priority, your soul responsibility. We are in an industry where a mother will hand you her newborn child trusting that you will do everything in your power to save that child's life, and you NEVER betray that trust. People who suffer from substance dependance can certainly be difficult patients but you never judge them and you always treat them with compassion and respect. I am sickened by what I've seen here and my heart goes out to his family members.

As a healthcare worker in a hospital. I apologize. We need to check what frustrations we have and treat each patient differently. Also we must treat all patients including drug and alcohol addicted patients with compassion. I have to do yoga and meditation to check in w myself and it helps to pray before I go to work. It is a gift and an honor to do my work and to be asked to serve and help others. We must not take that for granted. I once saw a paramedic in a parked ambulance. There were 2 paramedics who had just put an elderly white woman in the ambulance. I stood by watching,,wondering why they were talking to each other, instead of not not driving away to the hospital( I assumed that was the destination),,, so,,with the lady lying in back of the ambulance, one paramedics was shaking vigorously the head of the stretcher as the woman lay there,,the paramedic kept conversing with the other while shaking vigorously, continually, the head of the stretcher! When I'd seen enough,,I yelled at the paramedics and asked,," why are you bouncing this lady's head up n down, shaking the thing so fast n furiously? Stop it! Stop that!!" The paramedics said to me.." I'm not doing nothing!! She then promptly closed the ambulance side door,so I couldn't see anything more!! I've never forgotten what I saw! I hope the sick person got to the hospital o k and is alright today. I hope so!

Even after his death, to say that the charges are a stretch and that the case is unusual when there is video that shows the incident, shows that they feel they did very little wrong. A life was lost! Not to mention, thank God I want dying, but I’ve been in similar situations with Illinois paramedics. They definitely talk and treat u like that on the regular. The doctors/nurses/er are used it abs most of them don’t blink an eye to how paramedics treat ppl, same as the police in this video.

This is terrible. At the very least it is negligence but one thing that could be hard to explain away is putting the man, shoving him actually, onto the stretcher, which was outside, and then strapping him to it tightly, while he was prone position (belly down). Especially with the apparent symptoms of distress and breathing, that makes such an action even worse...her attitude only bolsters a case that this was done out of emotional recklessness or intended to inflct injury non the patient. And Cadigan never even enters the house! He just stands out there, then shoves, violently, the patient back onto the stretcher face down...then they strap him to it tightly. They knew what they were doing was wrong. Many times, people taken by ambulance, treated by EMS are in highly vulnerable physical and/or emotional states....this kind of behavior and actions makes it an even more heinous crime. They killed him. They had to have known what they were doing was very likely to cause further distress and injury.

The offer saying “Listen to the music” the way he does reminds me of when I get annoyed at someone and try to say something almost joking, but serious because I don’t want an altercation, but definitely sad even they themselves thought she was being overtly aggressive and ridiculous.

The police officers showed more compassion than the EMTs and honestly it wasn’t the cops jobs to transport that man

They deserve to be charged for their actions. They didn’t treat him in a humane way. You don’t treat dogs like this much less a human. It’s completely awful all the way around.

I am a retired nurse who delt with those type of attitudes. We just told them to take patient to the hospital. We were the medical professionals they were just the bus driver. We made them take patient to hospital because if we didn't need them to go to hospital we wouldn't have called them. I worked the night shift and we got that attitude all the time because we woke them up to do their job.

That's the way most medical response teams are towards people that they feel don't deserve to live! Florida is no different! Speaking from experience! Majority of the time it will be the person very own family members, friends, associates, etc. That's right along with such treatment!

How are you a Emt and not do anything to stabilize the person they just strap him down like he was loose luggage on top of a cargo rack.

I was very upset it was obvious the guy was having a heart attack the police officers and the paramedics should’ve known with him sweating and out of breath he was having a heart attack. It was clear to me. This is so upsetting. I am so sorry to the family.😢
