I like the tip of tying the leader to the ring before removing the ring for whatever device is being used to store it. What a simple solution to minimize the chance of losing all the rings!

I always use tippet rings. I learned storing them from Rim Chung ( RS2 guy ). He uses a stiff thread ( e.g. Coates & Clark Dual Duty Plus, Button and Craft ) and makes about a 2 inch loop with a knot for each tippet ring. This takes less than a minute per ring. He then stores these in a small zip lock bag. When he needs to use a ring, he simply pulls a thread loop out of the bag and uses the thread to make sure the ring doesn't slip out of his hand while he knots it on the leader. Then clips off and discards the thread. This works super well. I use different color threads for different diameter tippet rings.

If I use tippet rings often when I use 0.12mm diameter tippets the line snaps maybe they are a bit sharp and cut them. With micro swivels it’s better for me.

Started using tippet rings a couple of seasons ago. Saved a fortune on Leaders as the tippet always goes before the Leader. Good tip on tying on the ring before removing it from the packet 👌

Great tips, Kelly! One thing I do a little differently is I tye a Uni-knot to the tippet ring as opposed to a clinch knot. The tag end of the Uni is away from the tippet ring ..Just makes a cleaner knot ...

I love the tippet rings. Discovered the second “trick” very quickly. Recall clearly one time I tied to the opposite side ring in the series and was ready to pull it off and saw my mistake and let out a few choice words. Agree they won’t sink a dry fly.

I use a somewhat similar trick. I thread the tippet rings onto a key ring that I keep on a retractor with my nippers. Tie it to a leader while still on that key ring and slide it off the key ring when I’ve tied the knot. It makes it easy to tie, practically impossible to lose the tippet rings and there’s no need to fumble with the packaging on the river.

I've never used 'em, but these are some great tips in case I ever do. I can absolutely see myself doing what you did the first time you tried them. I'm pretty old, so this is something I can do at home before setting out. I'm screwed if there is some finer tying I have to do streamside.

One advantage of tippet rings that I don't see mentioned is that many terminal knots are stronger than either blood knots or surgeons knots, thus eliminating the weakest link in you setup.

Will you do a video (if you haven't) on keeping ice out of your guides? is this why a lot of people don't fish in the winter? the line freezes to the guides an breaks the rod tip or guides? all of my rods (*5 so far) have sustained some damage, whether its a broken tip, or loose guides from ice...

For getting tippet rings and other things on cards in and out of plastic bags: Like Kelly I cut the left and right sides down. I do not round the top edge. Instead, I cut off good portions of the top and bottom corners at 45 - 60 degrees which aid in getting the card in and out of the bag. Straight cuts seem easier to me.

Anout 5 years ago, I had my leadrr setup with a tippit ring and was going out with a guide in Northern Michigan. As he was placing a fly on my line, he asked "what's this?" As I tried to explain a tippit ring he took the leader and tippit in each hand and and pulled the line appart saying "you don't need this shit!" And started to rebuild my leader without the ring. I'm happy to say my knots held but the tippit snapped.

I have never used them but it seems like if you could use them with dry fly rigs as well you could make a plethora of different leader/tippet rigs to swap out quickly. I just figured you only use them for nymphs/wets but i think i heard you say dries. Definitely want to try them.

I think my favorite thing about tippet rings is the versatility that they offer the angler. If you go out with a 7.5 3x leader with a tippet ring at the end, you can easily switch between dries, nymphs and even small streamers (I don't recommend throwing streamers on 3x but thats not to say I havent thrown small leeches or wooly buggers on it.)

Very critical point to keep in mind about tippet rings…… you must test them first because I’ve found that some of the “non-rounded” 2.0mm rings sold by Rio and Hanak have broke my tippet every time. Cortlandt and Angler’s Image are rounded and work fine. If you don’t believe me test it yourself. The same knot to a fly holds but to the tippet ring breaks every time with minimal pressure. One caveat to this comment is that some of these hold fine but there are enough that have sharp edges that you need to check each one first.

something no one seems to talk about.... a knot tied to line to line is usually about 40% or 50% break strength. For instance, Blood knot or Double Surgeons knot are weak. But a knot tied to a metal hook eye or tippet ring is much stronger -- for instance, a Clinch knot is 80 or 90% break strength. (Watch those Rio or Toitt knot videos.) So make that last knot of your line a tippet ring instead of a Surgeons or whatever and you'll gain maybe half a pound or more of break strength to your tippet.

i have been flyfishing 50 years,i only use 2 knots ,blood knot and nail knot. i haved used the same leader on my rods for years maybe even a decade before.I I am 62 and spent the last 40 years in winter fishing mostly dries with 6 and 7 x.I have never used a tippet ring.I have used one sage rpl3 2 pc 9 ft 5 wt made by dave scadden since the 1980s.I love watching kellys videos the best thing i learned is to spin the bobbin to the right, that is a awesome trick.I fish size 20-24 almost everyday in the winter,my advice is practice casting alot and learn to tie one knot fast ,i think that knot is a blood knot.I tied a bunch of found links, bwo emergers some other kellys patterns this winter.I fished my first good BWO hatch yesterday and today 4-1 2023 # starling feather 18 quill style flys, looked huge compared to what i have been fishing.I live in ogden ,ut Off to my home in kemmerer this week,i also have a place in st anthony idaho,my daughter lives in provo so i fish ogden, weber,HF,blacksmith fork, logan, provo in the winter.I have never fished the madison but drove by kellys shop slideinn last year.I love kellys videos feel like i know him, watched all of them, thanks. You have a place to stay and a wade guide for free in kemmerer kelly if you ever want to come fish .thanks you help alot of people with your videos and knowledge. The thing i like most about flyfishing is the hatch ,timing a hatch and its progression and changes,to time the hatch,to adjust your flys during and after a hatch when you get home.Midges been starting at 10 am and a combo bwo midge hatch about 1pm happening right now in utah, this snow and rain almost everyday this winter has been epic but mostly small fish.I wish every winter could be like this. One more week and up to kemmerer and ashton idaho for some big boys, caddis and pmds coming up as well as ice out on the lakes, walleye and crappie spawn at willard near my house.🎉🎉

I have a set of clarifying questions: With your example of a 7.5' leader, let's say 3x where you want to use 3x to your fly, are you attaching the ring to the end at 7.5' and adding a couple feet more of 3x or are you snipping off the 3x part of the new leader and reattaching with the ring? Additionally, I fish mostly 4x and 5x tippet. For the same 3x leader where I want to have a 5x tippet, can I skip the 4x and tie a couple feet of 5x directly to the 3x ring or do I need a couple feet of 4x between the two? (I generally have both 3x & 4x leaders but just in case I don't have the 4x at hand.)

  • @TheSlideinn

Dad, If I am fishing a fly on three X that probably means hopper or chubby stuff so I would likely go straight off the end of the leader and not use the ring, unless for some reason I felt the need for more tippet then I would just add more three X to the tippet. For the 4 or 5 X just add straight to the ring, no need to tapper it down in increments, KG

I tie the swivel end of the snap swivel to a thingamabobbef with a short piece of fly line backing. This gives my clumsy hands something to hold onto while I’m tying on a ring, and if I drop it, they’ll be easy to find, especially if I’m standing in water.

Not once could you see the tippet ring, Also don’t crap on for half the video length on meaningless twat, get stuck into the issue at hand. One last thing- play back the video yourself and ask the question did I understand what I just showed.
