The triple surgeons knot was a true lifesaver back when I first learned it. It is super easy and fail safe when properly tied

Tom thanks for this! I most heartily agree. I would add the non-slip loop knot or Kreh knot - very useful for tying on streamers and articulated flies.

I’m just learning fly fishing, but I’ve been spinning reel fishing for years. I only use 2 knots for everything! I thought I’d have to learn 8 different knots when i first started fishing. You’re absolutely right about it being intimidating. The knots I use are clinch knot, and surgeons loop. The only other times I use different knots is if I have to attach line to line, and that one I have to look up every time lol

This is GREAT advice...I rarely use more than 3 or 4 different knots...

Great video! I've found the clinch knot finicky so switched to a pitzen knot for dries. It's visual and audible confirmations are reassuring. And because the pitzen is stronger I've been forced to learn the triple surgeons as I generally break off somewhere along my length of tippet or leader. Any wet flies get a non-slip loop knot. Gonna put the perfection in my to-learn list as I use an albright for leader to line connections.

Thanks Tom for this video and all your other great videos. I’ve been fly fishing for about 30 years but this video taught me why my triple surgeons knot sometimes fails. I was not grasping all 4 sections firmly and equally. Thanks again.

Like your knots! The clinch knot works best in small diameter monofilament line tied on hooks that are not too different from the size of the hook's wire. It does have the benefit of easy creation and uses less leader. The Uni knot has been my multi purpose go to for years. Perfection Loop knots are so simple and failure proof that they have no real replacement for me. Thanks for this revisit of knots presented in the Orvis Learning center.

I have used your knots from day one for 40 years, the best one is tippet to tippet ,its fast and strong and your right back on the water. I found the style for the knots in the orvis leader package.

Nice demo and as always, your presentation style and tone are so soothing and easy to follow. One of my first trips to a fly shop was for help with knots. Rusty Gates was at the counter of his lodge that day and I remember the somewhat amused look on his face when he saw a couple of my “Better” knots I brought with me. He pulled down a very inexpensive Tie-Fast tool and said “this is all you need. Follow the instructions inside.” Being a bit desperate I took his advice to heart. It’s a single process with very slight variations that does everything I’ve ever needed. I tested my Tie Fast nail knots with a digital scale against my own blood knots and clinch knots and surgeons knots. Only my surgeons knots came close to the breaking strength of the Tie Fast nail knots. Once in awhile I still use a surgeons knot to save a little time and change a tippet section but 99 pct of my knots are on the Tie Fast. Easier in cold conditions and stronger than other knots I tie.

I use a tiefast for double nail knots on dry fly tippet. It can be easier in cold weather than doing a blood knot hand tied with frozen digits.

I learned the perfection loop as the easiest way to attach a saltwater fly as it gives the fly some good play in the loop. Once you get used to tying it, it’s one of the easiest knots to tie IMO

I fish the Elk in WV where we fish really small flies. So the Davie knot comes in handy. But yep the surgeon’s knot a perfection are mandatory. Well done.

Very good video and good viewer comments here. I mainly fish for great lakes run fish. The three I tie are a nail knot for Fly line to tippet, double surgeons for section to section, and a Palomar from tippet to fly (if the eye is big enough to double through) . I think i'll go to the triple surgeons. One more pass through.The surgeons has been my most common breaking point.

Great knot tutorial!

Because I did years of Bass fishing with spinning gear, I tied the Trilene Knot, but it had 2 problems with flies. First, it requires you to send the line thru the eye twice. Sometimes because of smaller flies, it cant be done. And second, it had a tendency to slip apart on lighter tippets. So the clinch knot is very similar and works well. Just re-tie your knot often if you've had fish tugging on it. (Which is what we All want)

As a guide, I wholly agree that these three are the most essential.

Another enthusiastic vote for the pitzen knot for tippet to fly. I also use it for tippet to tippet ring. I can’t understand why they’re not used more universally. They are one of the strongest knots, are easy to tie in the field, and the tactile “pop” they feedback when tied gives you 100% confidence it was tied correctly. That level of assurance isn’t replicated by any other knot.

I always start with a Pitzen Knot as I've never had one fail once tied correctly, but lately my 5X tippet had been breaking when I seat the knot. After one failed attempt I go with the Clinch Knot, because I'm not wasting this expensive tippet!

Why the triple surgeons and not a Blood Knot ??? I have come to depend on the blood knot and it never fails when tied correctly. Not the easiest knot to tie, however. My favorites are the barrel, your clinch, left handed turrell, and blood knot. I have my own knot, simple knot on leader with 5 half hitches. I only use 8lb leader which is soft enough to run through the eyes. Released numerous large salmon on this leader and knots. Nothing over 43 inches Atlanta salmon and sea run trout are all I fish.

Good stuff! Double davy here, flies smaller than let's say 18, the normal davy. Find them much smaller knots than the clinch and knotable with a tiny amount of tippet length. Streamer I use micro snaps with double davy or for small Streamers the non slip loop knot. The other two I use also, perfection loop and triple surgeons

Learned about the Davy and Double Davy last year and I agree it's such a great knot. I don't think I have one fail on me over 60+ days on the water

Exact three I use, gives me confidence that I'm doing SOMETHING right at least!

Tom... great video. I would add one more knot for tying on a fly... especially small dry flies: The Turl Knot. It's a simple slip knot that helps dry flies turn over properly. This is Brian from Twin Falls, Idaho.

2nnd time I have watched this, still useful.

With the clinch knot I like to go thru the first loop then come back thru the big loop then back thru the first loop then pull tight. I promise the line will break before the knot. I've always called it the fisherman's knot

I use the Orvis knot. It's easy to tie in the cold and I find I don't waste tippet.

Indeed,you can make the knot with a very large loop, but need only a very small free end. The knot is also much stronger and reliable than a blood knot. You also can use it to attach your tippet to the last loop of your leader. Your tippet never breaks at this knots,but at windknots in your tippet

I prefer the uni knot. Even with leaders I use a uni to uni knot. It’s a very simple knot to learn.

I find the double uni sits more evenly. Surgeons knot can tend to kink the smaller diameter line

Uni all the way. Dave Whitlock wrote a great article about it six or seven years ago but I'd already been using it awhile. it just confirmed what I already found out. simplicity. as an edit I use a non slip mono not when necessary and surgeon knot when I gotta rebuild a leader in low light lol but the uni is really optimum.

I like the blood knot to attach the leader to the tippet

I use blood knot for all knots on my leaders. I make my own leaders tapering down the lb.

Both of the first 2 knots have been very problematic for me with anything thinner than 3x. Now I tie an orvis knot for anything that isn’t a streamer and a non-slip loop for anything that needs to swim. I’ve had very consistent performance with those 2.

I think if I had those Orvis Pro Waders I could tie knots better. I'll let my wife know. Good video 👍🏻

Sometimes a video is so simple it just might work. 90% of knot videos are usually so complex that they require maximum dexterity and vision and give you probably a 10% better knot. I’ll take simple and effective any day of the week. The only not I will also recommend is a Uni knot. And this is one I use to tie a small piece of tippet for a dropper rig. Such an effective knot and can be used also in place of a surgeon not when joining two lines. But I find myself doing the surgeon knot especially when I’m waist deep in the river and being pushed around a bit lol

I don't disagree, but a nail knot and a blood knot are worth learning, too. I'm guessing they've been phased out some by gadgets or something, but I'm sure they still have value.

A simpler clinch knot Tag end through the eye Right hand holds tag end and standing line with fly dangling Put left index finger into loop against fly Rotate left wrist in either direction twisting the tag end around the standings line 5-6 turns With your left index finger and thumb reach through the loop and grab the tag end and pull it back out of the loop. Moisten the knot and pull the knot tight.

Using a 1mm tippet ring, I attach leadership TR, then attach tippet to TR. If I want a tag for a dropper, just use a longer section of tippet material to leave a 6 or 8" end after I tie a clinch knot. Simple and easy, the 1mm TR is almost neutral buoyancy.

Tom, why not the Improved Clinch Knot? That is the knot I use to fasten mono to any lure, fly or anything else. It is one more step but it has never failed me. The other two are 100% what I use!

If it's never failed you then keep using it.

The Orvis knot is as fast but more secure than the Clinch or improved Clinch knot.

I would also add the Albright knot.

you left out the nail knot. i find the nail knot goes thru the rod guides much nicer than the loop to loop attachment of the leader and the fly line. your opinion please

Davey knot is where it's at

I rarely use a tippet and tie my fly directly to leader material. Simply because 1) quick and easy 2) fine tippet material I have such a difficult time handling. Most leaders and fly lines these days (at least what I buy from Orvis) already have loops in them and are simple to attach. I just wish I could get better tying the clinch knot on those tiny #16 hooks. I can barely see them. :)

I thought Tippet was to help bring the line diameter back down after damaging your tapered leader.

@@toxic1698 yes, tippet should be used to get a finer diameter tippet section closer to the fly. Avoid tying on thicker diameter near the fly ..... that would make casting difficult..... fly won’t want to unfurl properly.

Tom 🙏 I use mostly the Davey knot 🪢 and surgeons knot of course, my perfection loop is simply make a loop and tie a square knot holds like a champ 🙏

Nothing scientific here but i use I use an SC knot or double uni for tippet to leader as I found with very light tippet Surgeons can break at hook set due to the twisted line.

Clinched knot and triple surgeon, just like doctor ordered! Only two knots I use, basically. (clinch to tie fly to the tippet and second to tie dropper fly to the tippet)

Dave Whitlock taught me the perfection loop in 1978. Damn, that was so long ago.

Beginner here, With enough pulling power I can always destroy my clinch knots. Sometime I'm pulling real hard but it always comes lose. Any ideas to fix this? :D

I much prefer the Blood Knot when making my leaders.

I unintentionally taught myself a clinch knot for my spinning reel except that I wrap 7 times. Has yet to fail me.

Anyone have thoughts on clinch vs improved clinch? I’ve always used improved clinch, but it takes longer and it’s a bit more fiddly.

@@rosenbauert I agree. I've tried both for extended periods and couldn't see any discernible difference. I've only used the "normal" one for years and they don't fail, as long as they're tied well and you play the fish correctly.

Improved has shown to lossen more because you can't tighten to the hook eye as easily.

I think RIO made a video showing that an improved clinch is actually weaker than a clinch knot.

Palomar and FG knot thats all you need 🤷‍♂️

My advice is do not put the leader in your mouth unless you have had giardia and are fine with it. Spit on it. Also one variation on clinch is to twist the fly vs wrapping the tag end....still 6 turns of course. It’s easier for me to control in all light and weather.

Question for everyone!! How often do I replace my leader? With the surgeon knot you lose some everyone you tie tippet on right? Can someone explain 😅

the clinch knot isnt working for me, fly falls/breaks off after the second or third cast.... im about out of flies and cant figure out why... im doing the knot exactly as specified... five times around the line then back thru the loop and cinch tight... so far has not worked at all... im brand new to this so idk whats wrong, ive never had this issue with other types of fishing rods/lures... i have been fishing my whole life, just not fly fishing... my rod didnt come with any "tippet", just fly line and leader.... whats tippet? and whats it for? do i need tippet to make it secure?

I do a sextuple surgeons knot when I am attaching fluorocarbon to braid

My knots: Double davy to fly. J-knot tippet to leader. Perfection loop.

This is exactly what I use too.

I hate tying perfection loops, so I tie a surgeon's loop instead. Not as pretty, but I'm less likely to throw everything in the river out of frustration.

I don't like the clinch, I use a snell knot tool. the snell knot is far superior, especially for smaller flies and tippet. the other two I use all the time.

Excellent video - so glad not to see a nail knot :-)

I find that the clinch know often kinks my flouro and makes flies (especially dry flies) more noticeable. Am I doing something wrong with my knot? Does this happen to anyone else?

Be careful when you draw it through the hook eye that you don't scrape it against the eye of the hook. That is what kinks your tippet.

Only 2 knots needed... double surgeons knot for tippet to tippet connections .... 16 - 20 knot for tying on flies... much better knot than the cinch knot

Nail knots cast better. Anytime im nymphing or streamers, i cut the loop

Dang ... I can't see the X7 tippet line (with 200 reading glasses) and I don't like fluorocarbon for the tippet line ...
