I switched from the clinch knot to the improved Davy Knot about 15 years ago and I love it. Super easy and quick to Tie.

I like using small rope or even old fly line, to learn new knots with. Its easier to see what you are doing and how the lines cinch tight. Then try it with monophiloment, etc.

I even keep "The field book of knots" with me, when fishing. Incase I forget the 52 knots I may need!

There should be one more knot. A loop knot for attaching a fly to the tippet. I use the nonslip loop knot. With the three shown here and you are all set to go.

I use the same knots but have always believed that a slow firm pull to tighten them was the best. Can you please explain why you do a fast pull?? Also what advantage do you gain from the fast pull ?

You use a surgeons knot for adding droppers? Do you just form the knot and then cinch it down around the hook of the first fly? I’ve been using an (improved) clinch for that. 😮

I started using the pitzen knot instead of the clinch knot 30 years ago. I found it easier and quicker to tie than the clinch knot and that I could tie it easy to tie with cold hands. Plus, the pitzen knot gives a satisying click to confirm that it is tied correctly and securely. I have not found any empirical study of the relevant strength of the two knots, but nothing in my experience suggests that I made the wrong choice. Also, i can tie it with ome hand, with the other just holding the fly steady.

Never heard of that one!

All three of those knots have never worked for me using Orvis Super-Strong. I have now stopped using the line as I just could not get on with it 😢

Can you also use the surgeon knots for attaching fly line to leader
