Twice has achieved unimaginable success in Korea, Japan, and around the world. Despite this, some people still feel that Twice is flopping and this editorial deep dive on Twice is my opinion on that. This Twice deep dive also touches on why their success matters, their role in the hallyu wave, and why Twice should be given credit for their success.

I would love the girls and more kpop idols be educated with history. But to be honest, my take on this is that this was still an unintentional offense. Westeners superiority complex love to assume that us asians know everything about the people, their culture, and most especially history. We Asians living in Asia are not really that educated of it. I am 25, have educated myself in lots of societal matters but I just learned about the symbol just now when the news broke. I even commented on Chae's ig post that I liked her shirt unknowing of its meaning. There's an asianboss video where the symbol is used and Japanese people has been using it as a different meaning: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aaWKmdqbcbm1iZM.html. For us, it's totally different. Also, the argument that "she could have easily researched on the internet about it. There are a lot of resources" still doesn't connect with me. Why would I search for something when I don't know what's wrong about it. Chaeyoung was ignorant. But we can't totally blame her as this was not a huge part of her culture and upbringing. We cannot feed all ideals and educate people of different things at once. So rather than hate her and cancel her (people have been very vicious especially Westerners), why not try to educate her more about the issue? I do not believe that Chae is a nazi supporter. That maybe possible but it's a slim chance.

@@JonathanMillerMusic i haven't been following kpop for long, but from what I've seen, stans just want their group to be the best and biggest. It's sad because it such a competition for them and idols just exists while dealing with it ig... They give them dance practices, collaborations, world tours, and they still worry about numbers. Fans will do just about anything to bring other groups down, to bring theirs up when in reality, people like me exist and we get happy when everybody IS SUCCESSFUL. The hate that's thrown around especially around twitter is insane. Take for example the chaeyoung situation. It is justified to give critism because she did something wrong. With that being said, I've noticed that while some do genuinely care about the situation, others are happy that SHE did it so they can hate on her and bring the whole group down... If you are doing that, then how much better are you from those who are defending chaeyoung? Absolutely nothing, you are still putting hate/idols over morals...

people act like "flopping" is the worst thing in the world. that's what you get when you have people obsessing over charts too much. art is art and you can't measure these things constantly. it is what it is because twice already has a lot of impact on their fans and the industry as a whole. so who cares if they have moments where they flop or don't.

  • @JonathanMillerMusic

    @JonathanMillerMusic

    Жыл бұрын

Agreed! That was kind of the point of this video too. It’s like chart placements are amazing and fantastic but they aren’t the ONLY measure of success. Also no one can maintain that level of success forever, peaks and valleys are a thing. Not just with twice but in general, some people expect artists to be #1 on every chart for multiple weeks consecutively and win every award and the second an artist doesn’t do that, people are quick to write them off as a has-been. It’s so weird to me hahaha

Here's what people dont understand. Twice begin with small budgets, a long and hard way to debut. Their journey were more bumpy than smooth. But the more they go, the more they learn. Not to forget how they brought themselves to the public. They always be themselves around fans and media to showcase the sincerity and genuine music, and people saw that. Hence, the organic growth of Twice. People not only fall for their music, but for their personalities as well. The faster you grow, the faster you fall. But Twice took their own sweet time to grow and understand this industry. JYPE really did a good job in maintaining their perfomance and consistent in feeding their fans new music. Their songs are fun, funky and impactful. So, to say Twice is a flop or Twice is near disband? A HARD NO! They are growing and believe me when I say, they will reach their 10th years mark in 2025 with more success and achievements. Until then, Congratulations TWICE! ❤‍🔥🔥

It's complicated, and I don't fully understand it, but it's not any one thing. It's a combination of things, but if I had to boil it down to two, it would be that, one, kpop is a capitalist dream/nightmare that cleverly/diabolically turns music into a competitive team sport, so some of it is just the nature of fandoms always wanting to tear down those competitors at the top. The other is that some people just don't like cute concept and refuse to recognize Twice as anything but that, whereas others stan cute Twice and refuse to accept that they've outgrown that. As a bonus third factor, some kpop fans have a strange habit of justifying why they don't like a song with charts and views/streams totals and sales. So, instead of people saying "this song is not for me," they say "look at the numbers" because in their minds that makes their opinion more objective. Sorry for the dissertation but I've been pondering the same thing for the last few weeks.

Spectacular video! I’m a musician of a much older generation, and your video traced my journey through the world of Asian pop music. My introduction to the genres started with some curiosity after seeing late 90s acts as they debuted in Japan via the Hey!Hey!Hey!Music Champ! as it was broadcast weekly on a local international TV station in San Francisco. It was through this vehicle that I witnessed the debuts of acts such as BoA, Utada Hikaru, ELT, Amuro Namie, and so many others. I became fascinated enough to attend a Japanese language school and eventually travel to Japan. Ultimately, I landed in Korea to teach English, arriving the same week as Twice’s debut. From that point, Twice’s music became my “go to” soundtrack for my nearly decade of life in South Korea. The fact that I am a rock musician whose roots are in the music of The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Queen, and David Bowie, and yet consider myself a dedicated Once, is a testament to the broad appeal of Twice. It has been such a pleasure to watch them mature, advance, and now explode into the US market. They have brought nothing but joy to the world and deserve all the rewards that result from such a hard earned and authentic success.

This is such a well made tribue/celebration of Twice's journey. They have truly come so far in the last eight years and have grown in beautiful young women. I know a lot of us were holding our breaths when they were going through contract negotiations, but they came through! All NINE of them! I know some poeple have been harping on them since they transitioned from their cute concept to their more mature concept, but personally it's been extremely endearing to see that. They're no longer the young girls that just debuted, they're grown women now. Plus, it was done right! It was done gradually and not forced down anyone's throat. Now that Twice have conquered both the K-pop and J-pop industries, it make sense they're going to target the western market. I can't wait to see what they accomplish. P.S. I loved what you had to say regarding Chaeyoung's shirt controversy. We need to educate people rather than simply tear them down. However, I will say, I cannot accept or reject her apology since I'm not a part of the community that was affected. Overall, this was a great video! This may seem like a lot, since I know you're in the middle of moving, I would love to see a deep dive into EXO's journey. Especially since they're going to be coming back this year after so long. (Hopefully it's with all nine of them, but I understand if Lay can't participate). I would love to see what you have to say about them and what they accomplished during their career. But please don't overwork yourself! This is just a suggestion. Love your work!

I didn’t want to just tack something on the end and make it seem like I was trying to downplay what happened with Chaeyoung. People absolutely have a right to be offended by that, so I wanted to make it clear that this video wasn’t put together a) last minute and b) to condone those symbols or what happened. Hopefully it’s an educational opportunity or only for her but also the kpop industry the importance of becoming more culturally aware. ❤️ Also, I will add exo to my list! In their most recent twice behind the scenes video sana even said that her native language of japanese is getting worse since she practices korean and english so much. her brain gets overloaded and confuses korean and japanese a lot. that just shows how hard they work for onces, and watching a deep dive on them always brings me to tears because they deserve all the North American success they are getting.

Thank you for this, this was a really well made video. I also never understand people that seriously try to say "TWICE are flops" when the sheer facts and numbers already proof otherwise. Even if some of the things they do don't work out as well, you can never deny them the achievements they already have and also they still make, they break records still, they break their own records still, they sell out stadiums, they sell huge amounts of albums etc. They are in this business for 8 years, it is normal that they have up and downs but you can not deny them the success they already have and still have and I don't doubt that there might come another group in the future that will be as or more successful then them, but that still doesn't invalidate the fact that TWICE made history, that they achieved things before others, that they set records etc. It's ok if you don't like their music, but even then you can not deny what they already achieved. Every time I see people saying "look they are flops they don't win music shows anymore" I'm like "they won more music shows then any other girlgroup already only BTS has more then them, they already achieved so much, every music show win is a nice thing to have but definitely not something they need to confirm their place or their success anymore. Now selling out HUGE stadiums, they only proof more they are not done, they still have new things to achieve and they are doing it. As a ONCE I'm really happy and proud of what they achieved and as an Europe ONCE I really hope we soon get this Part 2 of the tour and concerts here. With Ready to Be, TWICE for the first time charts even in Europe officially and for Germany (where I'm from) they started on Nr. 8 of the official Top 200 Album charts on their first entry. Personally I think instead of people trying to tear them down or hate on other groups except of their own favorite group, they should rather accept the achievements of groups like TWICE and use their time to support their own favorite group in a positive way. It's really sad that these days being toxic and hateful and trying to tear down other groups is so normal, when the people could use the time way better to support their favorite group in a positive way and make them proud. Because no Group would be proud seeing their fans hate on other groups or fandoms, especially when the other groups are friends of them, which is the case for lots of groups.

That's awesome! I didn't know they had charted in Germany! I wholeheartedly agree with a lot of what you said, especially the last part about no group being proud of fans hating on other groups. This is especially true toward senior groups. I think a lot of people forget about the senior-junior relationship in Kpop (and Korea, by extension) and it's something I wish more people would attempt to understand. Hopefully videos like these can help just a little in maybe repairing that! :)

I have followed Twice since their Sixteen days and I really like their growth since then. They work so hard and they have gotten better and better. I also like that their music document the feelings of women from young girls to mature women's mentality and attitude. I am sure that many girls (and boys) grew up together with them in their emotional journey. Even though this aspect is not noted by many people, I really find this emotional journey aspect fascinating. That is why I will continue to support them in the future. Love them!

I was a SONE (and still am) before I became a ONCE. During Snsd's issues I was heartbroken I took a rest too coz SNSD was the only kpop I stan (I was highschool) .. then years later I discovered TWICE in my college and I was nvr the same - right now Twice is the only kpop I stan (except for Snsd).. I can see and say that Twice took their time to where they are right now which they truly deserved.. if I have to summarize my life SNSD and TWICE will fill it. And if Twice in the future go on separate ways my kpop days is over then..😢😢 I could never imagine Twice without the other 💔 I love TWICE beyond their musics and achievements but they captured my ❤ of who they are as a person and towards ONCEs.

Beautifully presented as always. I think JYPE at that time was at the forefront of expanding Kpop beyond the Korean shores with the way they constructed GOT7 & TWICE. What better way to instantly generate a fan base by having members from that market in the group? And they are not just token wallflower members in the background. They have personality, charm, charisma and the work ethic to go with it. As a Chinese-American, I was instantly drawn to them because of Tzuyu, Jackson, & Mark. TWICE has definitely put in the work to get where they are now, working almost non-stop year round during their debut years to the point of exhaustion. Luckily, they had time to learn things along the way to improve themselves as artists and individuals to where now they have more creative control over their content. Personally, I have been loving their new releases and their gradual experimentation with different genres. I can't wait to see the reaction that MiSaMo gets when they debut in their home country. I'm sure it will be an emotional moment for them (and Japanese ONCEs) to come back as a group of Japanese women who conquered the international market.

As a Big fan of Twice, i really adore you to make a deep research about them, and i really thanks to what you have done for this video! I'm just becoming an ONCE during "the feels era", but in just that short amount of time i can tell you TWICE is one of the pure, kind, humble and amazing girlgroup in K-Pop industry. There is nothing to say about how good their music and performance. But in the other side, you will easily fall in love for their relationships, interaction, and kindness character that they have. And i'm sure, their bonds as a group, friends and family is something that make them can keep up with all the obstacles that they have until now. They deserve everythings good that thay get for all of their hardwork. Even TWICE is not a group that introduce me to K-Pop, TWICE will be the last group that i stan ✨️ Note : i'm not usually comment on the youtube videos, so i'm sorry for my english bcs it's not my main language. I got into K-pop because of Blackpink and bts. One day, I found twice, and I thought "wow who could follow a group with 9 members?" But their individual personalities and them being funny and seeing how they eventually became a close family to each other was pleasant to watch. I will say it is sad that this situation with chaeyoung happened. Because with all the hate in America happening, watching K-pop was an escape. I just hope this will help JYP to teach their groups about what is acceptable and what shouldn't be tolerated. Because stuff like that could hurt their success in America. Because we all know in this industry, they love to raise you up so they can find a way to super knock you down.

Thank you so much for this video. You're a fantastic writer, researcher, and editor, I will definitely be checking out your other videos! I'm a once so I'm admittedly very biased, but I appreciate you so much for this video because I have seen so many anti's and non-fans narrow in on the member's diverse range of vocal abilities, their having debuted/ being managed by a top 3 company, and their concept changes to dismiss and devalue the group. It's been deeply frustrating seeing people compare Twice to other groups with stronger vocals, or attempt to assert their on a downward spiral because a group of late to mid-twenties women don't want to cosplay as aegyo high schoolers anymore. They have indeed worked so incredibly hard and have so achieved so many great things, hopefully this video will challenge those mindsets and show people why Twice deserves the love. On a personal note, I really became a Stan after watching Sixteen, (I try to support all the idols who featured on that hellish nightmare scape of an idol competition show) and they've quickly become a favourite because they are indeed funny as f, and I'm a Britney Spears child so I will take a choreo group over a vocal group any day. Can't wait to see them live in my country for the first time this summer!

Hahaha your comment made me smile! As a fellow Britney kid of the 90s I FEEL YOU. 😭 I know what you mean. I’ve seen people do this stuff so many female pop stars (regardless of where they’re from) and then in a few years time after the women have “overcome” this, they suddenly gain respect in everyone’s nostalgia. 🙄 I’m like… or we could appreciate them now?? Hahaha You won’t find me pitting women against women on this channel and if for some reason it seems like I am, it’s usually a small relevant comparison while also still supporting both artists. Music should be appreciated and fun, not as a weapon to tear each other down. ❤️

Thanks for the video. As a Once, I didn't think anyone would make another 'making of Twice' video. In truth, their YT views and sales number in their domestic market is trending down. So I think before their contract renewal, JYP had them go on a world tour to see for themselves how big they are out of Korea. And the reception they got on foreign soil convinced them it was still viable to stay together. As a proud Once, we never tire of spewin all the stats like 120 Award Show wins (cos we know no other girl group comes close), but more important, TWICE literally affected the entire K-Pop in a very deep way. Sixteen was Twice's creation story, and after that, survival shows become the norm for groups to debut. Like IOI, or WannaOne, or Izone. Then, despite political tensions, Twice is almost half foreign and one third Japanese. Twice's successes directly pave the way for the current mix groups like Le Seraphim, New Jeans, Ive, and Baby Monsters. I wish them many more years of success both in Korea, Japan, and internationally.

I wanted to add that, despite the hate, their cute songs, iconic lines and dance moves are actually what will stay in people's mind for years to come. Trends go fast and are replaced in a blink of an eye, but Twice's songs and impact will stay a hallmark of kpop culture for many more generations, like Gangnam Style or Gee. That's maybe what other fandoms can't accept about them, that what they consider bad songs are gonna be remembered longer that any of their favorites' ones.

There was a video on TT saying Twice didn't debut popular and when I pointed out they did, the amount of whining and actually comments, trying to cite them having to tour schools before debut, or the delay of their topping the charts. People forget when they debuted instant #1 for a debut group, especially girl group, was super rare!

@@JonathanMillerMusic I am not a Once (I am ARMY) but I like some TWICE songs and I listen to them on Spotify every now and then. Some favorites are "What Is Love?", "I Can't Stop Me", "The Feels", and "Moonlight Sunrise". Your video was recommended by KZread and I got curious about the clickbaitish title. LOL

@@A1441 nice! Love BTS! Have you heard Jimin’s new song? What did you think? Haha I’m glad you did end up watching it! I try very hard not to be too clickbaity in my titles or thumbnails. Obviously my job as a KZreadr is to get people to watch, so I spend a lot of time really thinking about them and making long lists of potential ones to try. I was seeing “twice flopped” so much the past few weeks that I was like… I’ll try it. Hahaha cuz really this video does hit on that point quite a lot. I appreciate your feedback on why you decided to watch my video, bc it helps me get better! ❤️❤️❤️

@@JonathanMillerMusic Actually, I was in the MIDDLE of streaming JIMIN's new videos when I came across the cleverly titled video. It's clever because it got me curious as I have also seen Blinks say TWICE flopped. After all, the views and streams are not as massive as BP's releases last year. (Now I can counter their arguments with hard facts) As it turned out, the video gave me a fascinating history lesson about how K-pop conquered Japan and how TWICE played a big part in bridging the gap between Japan and South Korea. The video is 33 minutes long but I didn't mind because I was learning new stuff about K-pop and TWICE. This is the most detailed video I have seen about the group. I found a deeper level of respect for this group of hardworking artists. They truly deserve their success.

I think it's interesting and amazing how so many of Twice fans are also SONE these days. I also was unsure of TWICE at the start with SNSD being my ults, but overtime I realized TWICE was amazing for all the same reasons girls' generation was special in my heart. The quality music, never chasing trends or music fads, sticking to a core sound, harmony with the members. TWICE really filled the GG shaped hole in my heart and people don't give them the credit they deserve for all they've done. There will never be another TWICE, so we should cherish that. New acts will come and go and take their place one day, but it will never be the decade of TWICE we have now.

Oh this is very well done. In the middle of so many bashing from the start of their career up to now, this is something fair and beautiful to watch. Acknowledging this group doesn’t invalidate all other groups but only a few open minded fans can actually accept that each group has their own share of success and comparing who is the biggest or who is the best is actually the main reason of fan wars. Twice plays an important role in South Korea’s and japan music industry and now starting to conquer the whole world too! But my favorite part of this video is how the creator acknowledge that twice is breaking the “no english speaker, no western success”. Language barriers must have no room for music appreciation. Let’s appreciate every hardworking artist.

Thank you! I'm glad you got the true point of what this video is trying to convey. Everyone's success is part of the bigger puzzle and deserves their kudos for it. Talking about one group in particular isn't meant (at least with me lol) to take something away from another. There's more love to go around and it's ok to spread it. haha :)
