Honestly kpop songs during those times is so popular in radio like it will be a top 5 songs for straight weeks and you'll sing along with it without even knowing who or how the singers look like. That was around mid 2000's, nowadays it doesn't matter if the music is good or bad as long as they're all pretty and good looking it'll go trending in all platforms. Also I remember during around 2010 KZread is so small that the first MV to reach 100 million views is Shakira's Waka Waka world cup song and it took a year, now it's like a day or two if the artist is so popular.

I think, it is also notable that way back in 2010, Girls’ Generation is the first and only girl group (even until now) to have won Golden Disk’s Awards Disk Daesang with their second album outselling boygroup dominant era.

And to some point this makes it sad if you may say because it shows that only them could fought the boys era that is till this day predominant, without forgetting how the hate is targeted especially at girl groups in a society as conservative as Korea. Hopefully that will change eventually. For now I wish the legends aka Girl's Generation a happy 15th anniversary 💜

To compare it with the current times, they won the Album of the Year over the biggest bg of this time, BTS, on their peak but it happened during the time where there were far less ggs bc stigma against ggs were still strong + they were heavily underestimated and believed to be less marketable than their male counterparts. They took all the hate on the chin, kept going, and dominated the scene. They were THAT group.
i think what people don't really grasp about SNSD is that between. 2010 ans 2013 they were everywhere, the snsd mania was crazy. From Tv show, radio, brand deal, add, fan poster, it was even unbearable. There is the famous quotes that it's impossible to past a day in Séoul without seen yonna and taeyeon face at least once. And as i went to korea in 2019 it's true i saw yonna face at least 3 time a day. Even nowadays SNSD are huge. Mostly because of taeyeon solo and yonna acting but they still remain legends

This is so true. I made my first trip to Seoul in 2014 and I collected pictures of the girls all over. Yoona, Taeyeon, Tiffany, Jessica (and Krystal) and Yuri just in every day advertisements around. At first, I wanted to scream and jump up and down to see them but by the end of the week it was normal. I think the only thing I didn't experience was hearing TTS playing in the wild which, now that I think on it, was weird since they were promoting Holler at the time
This cannot be said enough, "So Nyeo Shi Dae FOREVER!!!" Whether GG9, or GG8, or GG5 (ALWAYS GG9 in my mind), they are the epitome of KPOP itself. Their talent, poise, humility, and absolute professionalism over so many years underlies their stage presence and global following. They are so deserving of the title, "South Korea's Girl Group!"

Man… you’re one of the few people that acknowledges Jessica’s departure as being one-sided, hence being blacklisted, while also explaining why Jessica and SNSD might never be seen together again. Good explanation.
Just the fact that they are consistently on the rank of Brand Reputation every single month (which is currently dominated by the 3rd and 4th gen girl groups btw) says it all. Legendary and iconic.

It's true. I've watched concerts and shows from other groups/idols, and there's just a strong emotion felt when they (SNSD) perform that you really don't feel from the rest, even as good as they may be.
They really lived up to their name, kpop girl groups have been heavily recognized after snsd paved the way for them. I remembered how underrated girl groups are during their time and even experienced black ocean because audiences would prefer watching boy groups perform. They created a generation for girl groups to prosper and I respect them so much for that.

And somehow younger generation wants to discredit them and gave the credis to wondergirls and 2ne1.. no hate to those groups.. yes they're also phenomenal but for me they're not as long lasting as SNSD
Some members of the other group survived because they got the group name attached to them. However, for SNSD, the member themselves keep the name “SNSD” running, not the other way around. This shows how powerful they are individually to not even have the need to attached themselves to SNSD anymore. This is such a one in a trillion case in kpop.
"It's easy to look at stream and video numbers and deduce that GG wasn't as popular as groups of today but that's not the case.. they were. Numbers can't accurately display Girls' Generation's popularity because they leave out so much." This was everything. Thanks!

I think that even though they basically pioneered 95% of anything related to the ‘modern kpop girl group’, I’d say they also pioneered staying truly relevant. While they are in no way shape of form the only ‘old’ group to still have high sales, views, overall relevancy, I would say they’re the only ‘old’ girl group to still keep up with the newer gen. They transcended both 2nd, 3rd and now 4th gen and that is truly commendable. I wonder if any 3rd gen girl group will follow in their footsteps once 5th gen debuts.
@JonathanMillerMusic

I absolutely agree. They way they have been able to move through time is a testament to them as a group and to their own name. I can think of a few gen3 groups that might do it. BTS has obviously sealed their legacy into the history books. It will be fun to see how time develops when gen5 rolls around! :))
@xheralt

I'd have to partially disagree. As I've mentioned elsewhere, EXID has managed to not just keep up with the younger gens but show them a thing or two. As far as 3rd gens go, Red Velvet and Mamamoo are sure to have longevity, and probably Twice as well. Blackpink would most likely break up or be broken up, Jennie and Lisa surviving as solos, the other two vanishing. KARD's international fans will prompt a Euro/USA company to pick them up when they bail on their parent company.
This is the reason why Legends never Die. They can imitate you but they can't duplicate you because you are special. SNSD forever 💗 💗 💗

I knew their name years before I even knew or heard of what K-pop was. I think it’s safe to say that they are icons.
You know what's funny? These new stans actually have the audacity to disrespect SNSD and discredit them. Like bro? These 8 girls literally embody GIRL GROUPS, GIRLS, LITERALLY FEMALE EMPOWERMENT. These senior kpop idols support your groups. It was a hard time being a stan when social media or streaming services weren't as popular as now yet they managed to get their Legendary status.
Not to mention us fans back then needed for fansubs and search obscure sites just to get updated live stages or Korean shows our idols appeared on. No IGs, no KZread channels from KBS. just trying to search stuff in those strange symbols (which we know now is hangul) that we didn't quite. You didn't answer how Girls' Generation changed K-Pop. I think it's because GG is the first professional girl group. They broke the domination of boy groups. The first girl group that have solo concerts (because their company was confident enough that GG could sellout the venue). The group that made singing live to be the norms, to the ire of other groups. Show! Music Core even banned lip-syncing for a short time in 2014, because of GG. But GG really changed K-Pop after Google bought KZread in 2006. In 2009 the GG - YT convergence finally happened. GG with iconic songs Gee, Genie, Oh!, Run Devil Run (plus 2 incredible CF songs HaHaHa & Chocolate Love). GG's visuals, dance routines & power vocals combined with YT's 16:9 HD format, stereo audio, and easy access. GG introduced K-Pop beyond South Korea's border -- not Psy. There are some facts that I want to add to your video. First, Tiffany was scouted from a singing competition in the US. 'Into the New World' was not just a moderate success, GG won their first music show win with that song. In fact, all of their title tracks up until 'Lion Heart' always won on music shows. f(x) and Red Velvet didn't have music show win with their debut songs. æspa did with 'Black Mamba'. About Jessica, I found it strange that Krystal and her parents never spoke out against SM. So obviously there's a lot that the public don't know and it's unfair to blame the other members or SM.

I’ve been listening to SNSD since 2011 since a friend showed me the game Girls’ Generation Shake on her iPod Touch (only real OGs know that game lol💀) and I’ve been a fan since The Boys era. My bias was always Jessica, and when 2014 happened, I couldn’t find a reason to keep listening to GG like I used to. Their releases after that event were fine, but something always felt missing to me because Jessica wasn’t there. .. I just figured I’d move on from them for good. But now that it’s 2022, it really hits different. I don’t know if it’s because of the pandemic or just the simple fact that I’ve gotten older (I started listening to them when I was 12 and I’m 23 now) but I’ve just been feeling so much nostalgia from all the things that made me happy when I was younger - SNSD included. I’ve been finding myself listening to so many of their old songs and remembering the lyrics to ones I thought I’d forgotten. I look back on old MVs and old variety shows and it brings back so many memories of being in my early-late teens and all the hardships I went through during that time, but always knowing that SNSD would be there to cheer me up. Watching this MV, listening to this song, to the album, has truly made me realize how big of an impact SNSD has made in my life. I admit that I was bitter before because of the Jessica situation but I’ve learned to move on and appreciate them all individually and as an 8 member group. They are the golden standard for Kpop and I feel so lucky to have witnessed all of their growth and success. Never thought I’d cry for any artist but here I am emotional af:’) Happy 15th anniversary!!💓💓💓💓 Also, no matter how you feel about this song and this album overall, I hope you know that SNSD isn’t trying to break records or change the music industry with this comeback - they’ve been doing that their entire career. This is clearly for the fans and their love for each other as a group and as friends🥹

me watching the video (and honestly throughout the ENTIRE promo cycle): 😃🥰🥺🥲😢😭😭💓
Hi there, thank you very much for this video. As a Sone for 16yrs, I felt very emotional watching this. If i may add some minor things here, Lee Soo Man was SM’ founder & biggest shareholder, not the CEO. The CEO of SM on 2014 was Kim Young Min if i’m not mistaken, and that year was surely a very rough year for the agency. As for the black ocean tragedy, it was caused by several boy groups fandoms that probably had “oppa is mine” syndrome (later on will be recognized as BIM / Bias Is Mine) & didn’t like SNSD interactions with their faves. The girls continued to rise despite all the hardships & obstacle towards the group or even them individually. I think black ocean could contribute to cultivating their strong mindset & shape them into a strong personality. Thank you for everything Soshi. There will always be new Queens & ofc records are meant to be broken by the next younger generation, however there will only a handful of legends. And Soshi is definitely one of them. So for the people who often discredit Soshi’s success (and they’re usually 6YO kids😂) if you didn’t experience the peaks of 2nd gen era, then you’re not entitled to belittle these girls. Because you don’t have any idea their impact & influence even when Kpop wasn’t really well known throughout the world
From a fellow S❤NE, excellent job on this video! I live in the Detroit area & became a K-pop fan in early 2023. Naturally, Girls' Generation was an instant favorite. At first, they reminded me of the Spice Girls with their vibe & their international stardom, but GG is so much more! I only wish that someone would write a book on the history of this group (thus far) as soon as possible. Because they are a crucial part of modern music. Thanks for all your in-depth K-pop videos.

ive been listening to kpop for 11 years now, and i still have so much love for snsd. i guess im not a real sone (i dont know all the songs, or all the inside jokes) but they still mean so much to me. when i first got into kpop, i was only interested in boy groups and dismissed the girl groups. but after i got into 2ne1 and shortly after that, snsd, i realized how talented they were and how much great music i was missing out on. they truly transformed kpop for the better and every time i hear old snsd songs it makes me feel like im in middle school again, rediscovering kpop for the first time. i was always have so much love and respect for snsd. even though its been 11 years now, im sure I'll stop listening to kpop at some point in my life. but ill never forget snsd and the impact their music had on me for so many years. ❤
when people keep on mentioning their faves who "pave the way" but snsd's footprints were already there lmao. Credit should be given where credit is due.
Your conclusion got me all teary eyed because I didn’t even realize how much this group meant to me until you articulated it! This was such a great breakdown of their career and impact! This is the sort of video that if someone asked me why I was super into kpop, I would send them this to explain. I feel like modern kpop fans are so into the gimmicks that they don’t really understand the magic of second gen groups like SNSD who were just in an entire class of their own. SNSD was magic; lightening that will never strike twice. It’s just so hard to explain what was so great about them, why they rule supreme, and yet you broke it down so easily that I’m jealous I could never put this into words. I’ve watched a lot of kpop retrospectives of second gen groups but they’re often by younger people who were a bit too young to be there at the time and so can only give numbers and basic information about them and what happened to them. But this video was a labor of love from a fan you can tell was THERE to witness it all. I feel like that’s why I loved this video so much because I can tell that you KNOW what made SNSD so special because you were there to witness it. You captured the magic of SNSD! Honestly the best retrospective of a second gen group I’ve ever seen in this site! Kudos!

Aww thank you for sharing that! I'm really happy you liked this. No matter how much time passes SNSD will always be my top Kpop group even though I love all generations. They really are/were a magnetic group and I hope this video did some of their wonder justice.
They are the reason why GG in 3rd and 4th gene is loved. The standard starts with them. They have been through roller coaster and the became legend.
There are so many popular groups in Kpop but only a few who changed the scene. SNSD, Big Bang, 2NE1 are the top of that list for sure.

Thank you so much for making this video. Ive been a SONE since 2010 when i was 16 and im so greatful to have been apart of SNSD growth and journey. Im so thankful to have known them during theyre prime, they have truely paved the way in KPOP. I hate when these new kpop fans shit on groups like snsd , 2ne1 and so much other 2 Gen GROUPS. without them kpop wouldnt be what it is today.

I didn't know this as a dedicated Sone, but SNSD was also the first group to add photocards to their physical albums (OH! album).
thank you so much for making this! I've been a fan of GG since 2008 and I learned so much from this video! Thank you for putting in the work to create this for the best girl group ever!

Despite me getting into KPOP in 2019 (late) third generation, I still feel like many newer fans do not acknowledge the power they had at their peak; and the way they became the ultimate blue print for female KPOP girl groups.

I think you can make that case. I think a lot of that comes from K-pop’s massive explosion in SNSD’s time away so it may be difficult for people to understand. (PS this is a safe space for ALL gens and fans of kpop so don’t feel bad about getting into it late! 💖)
Watching this on 2024 ❤

I love when I see people like you who maybe don't love every song but at least are respectful to senior groups for what they've done. I admire that quality and I wish more music fans had that!
From a very reader/listener perspective, here's my take: A book doesn't have to tell one coherent story, and an album doesn't either. What you need is context, because without it it's just a bunch of short stories/singles. Having a single story for an entire album is a very straight forward way to stay within context, and easier to understand, so I guess it makes sense to word it that way. But the point of any "rules" like this is to set a baseline, it's up to the artist to figure out what needs to be followed and what needs to be broken for maximum impact. :) is that true Jonathan every album is a single story?

KZread was very much a thing, even back in the early 2010's. Kpop wasn't just on Tumblr. Kpop, and SNSD were making the rounds on KZread in 2013. There were a few K-tubers chronicling kpop back then, Eat Your Kimchi being a solid example. They would regularly review 2nd gen kpop MVs and branced out to discuss Korean pop culture, food, and other topics.
I'm just waiting for Label GG to be announced. They more than deserve that honor.
Omg i just wanna say that i love you so much for being such a dedicated fan of Girls' Generation and I'm so glad and happy that our girls had made your life so much better after coming into your life. And thank you thank you thank you soooooo much for making this video. I woke up to this video and it already made my day. Girls' Generation FOREVER will be the saviour for me, and the original Queens and the blueprint of girl groups. Their impact is untouchable and their discography is beyond literally everything. Thank you so much for being someone whom i can rely on regarding Girls' Generation. I'll always comeback to you to feel better after listening about our girls. Keep up the great work and let's be FOREVER1 with Girls' Generation. Again, thank you so much

You're right, Girls' Generation has left so many impacts to many people's lives who grow up with them. OMG !! a whole 28-min-long recap on snsd's career in honor of their 15th anniversary?? i need to get my popcorn 🤩 5:06 oh so they debuted on august 5th?? why did i think it was on the 8th tho? lol now it makes even more sense that they're dropping their upcoming MV on the same date.. very meaningful 9:01 tysm for this explanation!! i think it must be the same process that SM used for aespa's Next Level, right? funny to see clueless ppl calling it "plagiarism" 🙄 17:37 are tiffany and sooyoung a long-standing songwriter duo then??😍 in the new album there are only two songs in which the members participated in writing the lyrics: seventeen and villain - and the credits go to soofany!! i'm so curiousss to hear em THANK YOU SM FOR THIS VIDEO JON!! THANKS FOR ALL THE EFFORT AND GOOD INFO FOREVER1 is my first SNSD comeback so videos like this are extremely helpful! Can't wait for this album too and i appreciate you, sones, a lot for the love and loyalty after all these years, not to mention the hard times you've been through. It's time to celebrate now 🥳

To answer your q: Soofany are not a long-standing songwriter duo. In fact, this is their 1st time. Sooyoung did write the Korean lyrics on Tiffany's Kor. ver. of Runaway. Sooyoung also wrote How Great Is Your Love and Sailing among other Soshi songs. As to Fany, not sure she has written any songs for the group before. It's my 1st cb as a Sone too (been a fan since the start of 2018) so I could be wrong

Thanks for making this amazing tribute video for SNSD!! I'm an indonesian SONE since 2008. It was so hard to buy and listen to their music back then, especially in countries outside South Korea. I practically grew up with SNSD too. As they debuted in 2007, I began my medical degree in the uni. The girls, their quirkiness in variety shows, their bond, their strength facing all the difficulties in that era of boybands and their musics inspired me and gave me strength to pass a difficult period of my life. That's why they are so special and no other group can replace SNSD in my heart. To have another comeback in 2022 is like a dream come true. Here's hoping for another world tour!! ☺

*Fantastic video presentation of SNSD! Thank you so much! I would also like to add the following:* 1. The title of Nation's Girl Group was bestowed by the Kpop industry, not by SONEs. 2. The title of Living Legends of Kpop was also bestowed by the Kpop industry, not by SONEs. 3. SNSD earned genuine respect by both the Kpop industry and the general public in South Korea because they proved their abilities and resilience time and again. Popularity and respect are very different accomplishments.

Yes and these new kpop stans specially the fans of TWICE and BP are calling them names and saying they were flops and all. Like girl, with talent alone, SNSD will eat your faves alive. They must be thankful that their faves debuted when youtube and social media is so huge for kpop that they can easily stream like crazy just for their idols to be famous. I rather go with quality over quantity..
