Dreamcast was pretty revolutionary when it came to online. They were the first console to have an MMO title, Phantasy Star Online, which released in 2000. Final Fantasy XI came out over a year later, for reference.

That is... that's so awesome! I didn't realize how little I knew about the online gaming space for consoles until recently. I thought the Xbox and PS2 were the beginning but even still... didn't know MMOs on consoles were even going at that point.

Comment for the algorithm! It’s amazing how far ffxiv has come from the nightmare it was in 1.0, this is why Yoshi-P is so deservedly revered by the community. -Elysian (see you in Twitch!)

Elysian!!! Thank you for the comment! And yes!!! This has got to be arguably the best turnaround for a game ever. Yoshi-P and the team deserve so so so much credit here

Yes. Levelndrop were real. When you died you lost xp percentage. Levels were based off total XP gained so if it dropped enough you would lose a level😂. Still in some ways I miss ffxi. It was hard but that was also the draw for some of us

That is just… nuts… I hate it 😂 I get what you mean, I love how difficult classic WoW is compared to retail. But there are some things that are just so extreme for me 😂

The worst thing is SE hasn't learned their lesson yet because they are still chasing that prestige look for their games and is not working. FF15 tried to be grander than life but you can literally see at what point they run out of time and resources, the second half suck ass and balls. FF7R looks amazing but the gameplay is bland and they had to split it into multiple games because there is no way they could do the whole original game with the new graphics in less that 15 years. And FF16 is regarded as a great game by everyone but it's still a commercial failure for SE on account of how much it costed to make.

Ahhhhh yeah fair points!! I am new to the FF franchise with FF14 so I’m still learning quite a bit! From what I’ve seen on FF16 it sounds a lot like they made good money but SE’s whole expectations of revenue from everything else and 16 was just too high. Commercial success but the corporate expectations weren’t realistic. I hope they can start tempering their expectations and keep a grounded approach to games. Feels like a lot of studios at this point have the similar corporate expectations that have yet to be realistic in anything and I don’t know why they haven’t changed their mindsets yet lol

in the case of FF16, A lot of it was Sony promised Square Enix that the install base would purchase the game. Sony also promised them other things like paying half the costs of promotion and offering to take 5% off each sale vs the standard 10%. This was done against Yoshida who wanted a global multi-platform released because PC players were asking for 16 to be on steam.

Uh... FF16 sold within their expectations, by their own admissions. It was far from a commercial failure. However, it was not the outstanding, gigantic success they were hoping for, that would make up for Forspoken and Babylon's Fall. FF15 was an entire can of worms that got stuck in dev hell and rebooted twice. I'd honestly say it's issues lay less with SE and more specifically with the director there. FF7R was always planned as multiple games, because they realize that if they don't give it proper respect (since FF7 is arguably one of the most important games in SE's history) it would result in such a backlash that it couldn't even properly be calculated.

@TheTrueGamerKing534 that’s what it was about FF16! It was a success but couldn’t make up for failures. I’ve only heard great things about that game too!

cyberpunk was really fun at launch, played it, but had a beefy PC. FF14 doesent even compare. It's the greateast comback in history.

I’ve yet to get to Cyberpunk so definitely my comments are based on what I hear, but also I do agree! FF14 nuked its 1.0 to completely relaunch the game to go from a failure to more popular MMO currently. Absolutely the greatest comeback!
