LYRICS
What's my problem?
Well, I want you to follow me down to the bottom,
Underneath the insane asylum,
Keep your wits about you while you got ‘em,
‘Cause your wits are first to go while you're problem-solving.
And my problem?
We glorify those even more when they..
My opinion, our culture can treat a loss,
Like it’s a win and right before we turn on them,
We give them the highest of praise,
And hang their banner from a ceiling,
Communicating, further engraving,
An earlier grave is an optional way.
No.
Neon gravestones try to call for my bones.
What's my problem?
Don't get it twisted.
It's with the people we praise who may have assisted,
I could use the streams and extra conversations,
I could give up, and boost up my reputation,
I could go out with a bang, they would know my name,
They would host and post a celebration.
My opinion will not be lenient,
My opinion, it's real convenient,
Our words are loud, but now I'm talking action,
We don't get enough love? Well, they get a fraction.
They say "How could he go if he's got everything?"
I'll mourn for a kid, but won't cry for a king.
Promise me this,
If I lose to myself,
You won’t mourn a day,
And you'll move onto someone else.
But they won’t get them. No they won’t get them.
Don’t get me wrong, the rise in awareness,
Is beating a stigma that no longer scares us,
But for sake of discussion, in spirit of fairness,
Could we give this some room for a new point of view?
And could it be true that some could be tempted,
To use this mistake as a form of aggression,
A form of succession, a form of a weapon,
Thinking “I’ll teach them,” well, I’m refusing the lesson,
It won’t resonate in our minds.
I’m not disrespecting what was left behind,
Just pleading that it does not get glorified,
Maybe we swap out what it is that we hold so high.
Find your grandparents or someone of age,
Pay some respects for the path that they paved,
To life they were dedicated.
Now that should be celebrated.

I think this is the rawest discussion of suicide I've ever seen. No prose, no pulled punches, nothing. Just speaking directly to the listener with a very, very sharp, concise message.

@@blurryfacetm3616 @Brayden Swope Eh i think this song sticks out a bit from their other songs. I think it'd be actually really silly to say that a lot of other twenty one pilots are as blunt as this song. I mean, the last two TOP albums are literally built around metaphors. Some of their songs that deal with suicide the most use extensive metaphors, like Trapdoor, Migraine, HLTY, etc. I'm not gonna act like this song doesn't beat around the bush at points or make use of figurative language, but this song is still extremely blunt compared to other TOP songs. And that's a good thing.

Growing up, Linkin Park was one of the first bands I became a fan of. There were even times when I would listen to nothing but LP. During the pandemic, I truly became a fan of Soundgarden as well, whose lead singer was the guy that Chester looked up to, Chris Cornell. And to think that almost 8 years after becoming a fan of Linkin Park, I’m here listening to twenty one pilots, who is pretty much the forefront of a newer generation of musicians who have the same messages that LP AND Soundgarden had. Sometimes, things come full circle, huh🥲 RIP Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell🙏🏼

He sounds PISSED in this, and I totally get it. He had a great chance to talk about this issue so directly, and he took it. I love that he cares enough to take the time and tell everyone that doing something so horrid and drastic of a decision is not the way out. This song doesn't feel like a song or rap. It feels like a speech or a discussion. It sounds like he sat down with a piece of paper and a pencil, wrote down every thought he was having on this issue, and spoke. It's so raw and almost vulnerable because it sounds like it was meant to be a poem rather than a song. It's almost as if he sat each of us down with him at a table and gave us a window to see into the truth.

The last verse is probably the most important; it is talking about how so many TOP fans glorify Josh and Tyler and not the lyrics/message: "maybe we swap out what it is that we hold so high" It is not about Tyler or Josh being gods of a culture, it's about living above the culture and bettering ourselves. The boys are just human like us; they never wanted to be worshiped and it's about time that we started taking their real message to heart... love yourself, not us.

Lately I been seeing a lot people glorying some mental disorders and younger generations using suicide as a joke when it should not be and I think that's what Tyler says here we are not scare of the stigma of mental health anymore so maybe is has become easier to glorify certain mental illness.

This song opens up a new conversation about how important it is not to romanticise suicide/glorify it, and I feel like this was such a good way of getting this message across. The spoken word part at the ends hits so hard oml.

The song is not about the anger he feels for people who think suicide is a way out. It’s about the anger he feels towards people who “glorify” suicide rather than celebrate what’s still with us. Hence the last bit where he talks about finding your grandparents and paying “respects for the path that they made”. He feels people should praise the people who have stuck with us, rather than those who have lost the tragic battle against suicide.

On the other unpopular things to talk about are the unhealthy and bad uses of suicide. Well, the common instances are escape from pain but most of us seem to ignore that some use it to gain attention, or to threaten, or to gain something - which causes manipulation upon other people. And thats what Tyler warns other people not to use suicide for people to glorify and to romanticize.. it is never right. Rather, Tyler tells us, instead, to celebrate life as it happens and the way the elders paved the way for us and gave us lessons from their experiences. However, we often neglect our elderly and leave them alone in homes of the aged which deprives them of love and care... and that us what is also missing from us. Rather than giving love to those are still alive, we give them to those who are already lost.

I wanted to visit this song again to relive some memories I’ve been repressing. I remember listening to this song before my Suicide attempt back in October. I had been put on medication in august. The year before was the worst year of my life and I was still recovering. I just couldn’t do it anymore. That’s what I remember thinking. I wasn’t exactly stable on medication yet and I think that’s what made me go haywire. I took a handful of melatonin and wrote a Suicide note. I luckily survived, but I know some may not have been so lucky. This experience has put Suicide in a new light for me. I no longer see it as a solution, rather something that should never be considered. I never want anyone to make my same mistake. Remember to stay alive. ||-//

The ending is so POWERFUL and I applaud Tyler for making this statement! The shows like 13 reasons why and other forms of “raising awareness for suicide” isn’t equating to prevention of it. It always paints this picture that the people around you didn’t try hard enough to save you so you should use suicide as a weapon against them. It’s toxic and it’s not helping in a society where we joke about wanting to die 24/7. Instead of glorifying death we need to put the focus back on how beautiful and worth it is to stay alive. |-/

My mom went all in on my Daughter and Musically until I reminded her that her and her father lip synced and sung in the mirror (I don't think together. I think she got caught doing it. Was embarrassed and Grandpa said "I used to sing in the mirror too" to make her feel better) needless to say, once looked at like that mom stopped being a jurk. It's the same expression and emotion involved in the music, along with narcissism, (lol) it's just expressed on a slightly different platform. If we didn't have mirrors or Camera phones kids would sing along to music while looking in puddles or lakes.

When I was younger my brother said it was about “grandparents and the life they went through” so I always saw it from a wrong perspective and didn’t understand anything. Now I do, and honestly it’s a really strong message, and it’s true. Why do we “celebrate” those who went out early? The last line explains what I want to say here “The life they were dedicated, now *that* should be celebrated.”

To sum the message up: It's about how most people who commit suicide do it because society glorifies it as a good way for other people to finally notice and celebrate your legacy even though they ignored your struggles while you were still alive. This song is great because it addresses this culture that's going around about glorifying the problem in a non-preachy way. Just great.

One of my favorite songs from this album, very powerful, it may be sort of off putting due to how serious and frazzled Tyler sounds, because usually they are known for their happy, fun and playful sound, but this is where they get real and talk about real and important things… definitely can leave the listener like 😳

LYRICS: What's my problem? Well, I want you to follow me down to the bottom, Underneath the insane asylum, Keep your wits about you while you got ‘em, ‘Cause your wits are first to go while you're problem-solving. And my problem? We glorify those even more when they.. My opinion, our culture can treat a loss, Like it’s a win and right before we turn on them, We give them the highest of praise, And hang their banner from a ceiling, Communicating, further engraving, An earlier grave is an optional way. No. Neon gravestones try to call for my bones. What's my problem? Don't get it twisted. It's with the people we praise who may have assisted, I could use the streams and extra conversations, I could give up, and boost up my reputation, I could go out with a bang, they would know my name, They would host and post a celebration. My opinion will not be lenient, My opinion, it's real convenient, Our words are loud, but now I'm talking action, We don't get enough love? Well, they get a fraction. They say "How could he go if he's got everything?" I'll mourn for a kid, but won't cry for a king. Promise me this, If I lose to myself, You won’t mourn a day, And you'll move onto someone else. But they won’t get them. No they won’t get them. Don’t get me wrong, the rise in awareness, Is beating a stigma that no longer scares us, But for sake of discussion, in spirit of fairness, Could we give this some room for a new point of view? And could it be true that some could be tempted, To use this mistake as a form of aggression, A form of succession, a form of a weapon, Thinking “I’ll teach them,” well, I’m refusing the lesson, It won’t resonate in our minds. I’m not disrespecting what was left behind, Just pleading that it does not get glorified, Maybe we swap out what it is that we hold so high. Find your grandparents or someone of age, Pay some respects for the path that they paved, To life they were dedicated. Now that should be celebrated.

“Promise me this, if I lose to myself, you won’t mourn a day and you’ll move onto someone else” this line was always hard for me to hear because of the way it was “twisted” in my mind for a while it was associated with someone who told me that all the time. It always meant to ignore the person and pretend they never were even here. When I was finally able to listen to this song all the way through, I realized what he meant. There’s a mic drop at the end of this song every time I listen to it.

"Neon gravestones try to call for my bones." Tyler is describing the gravestone being covered in neon lights, fame, publicity, from the grave. Some people become more famous and are better remembered after they die, and people are almost always glorified after suicide. Tyler is saying not to let this be. Life should be more celebrated, glorified, and remembered. "I could give up," he could give up the fight. "and boost my reputation," think about how much publicity and fame it would bring. "I could go out with a bang, they would know my name" he would be remembered for a long time because of it. This song well puts a lot of what I think about. I'm not suicidal, but I've always thought it strange when people talk about it with glorification and talk about the person so highly while they never did while they were still alive. Let's celebrate life instead, speak of each other highly now, and realize we're flawed, but we can improve.

I discovered this song during a... Let's call it low point in my life... And in the clouded place where thoughts and ideas don't work how they normally do... I focused and dwelled too much on "if I lose to myself, you won't mourn a day and move onto someone else" and then the music swelling up created such a real emotional response... this section of this song hits me hard everytime. And I don't like that it jives with what I'm thinking and feeling when I'm in that dark place... It sort of... Gets things louder in my head. One last thought though... When this was happening... It wasn't a weapon... It was to attempt escape. I didn't want to teach anybody anything... I just wanted to get away from it... Even if it was in a body-bag.
