Yay for this video ! I think this explanation is very interersting. I agree with William Boared who said the march is towards death. The first verse could hint towards this (dying with every step, every breath...in that regard we all "fall in line") But i also feel that this song could be talking about suicidal thoughts, as in the lyrics he talks about "this time of every year" and "walk right off into the sea" which could read as a suicide. We know that Tyler Joseph describe himself as emotional, and earlier in the song he says how we are not supposed to show our feeling ("heaven forbid they see your cry") So we all march towards death, we can't show our emotions and like some other songs, Tyler Joseph seems to question the purpose of his life. I totally agree that the spaceship and the voice is about God or faith in general. In many songs we feel like faith helped him to get through a lot of his depression and suicidal thoughts, even though he doubts a lot ( in this song, after the voice calls him, the war begins in his head with his counterpart - blurryface ?) I don't know if that does mean anything, but in the song Addict with a pen he also use the image of desert (=land ?) and sand while evoking his depression...Where i think it catch up with your explanation is that the song also talks about the way he lives is life, because in the end he says that he answer the calls, follow the voice of God ("take me up", "You put me back in my place") But then again he is still in a march to the sea (towards his death) but that's ok because he will live his life differently and not fall in line anymore...Wow my comment is soo long, sorry about that ! Please comment what you think of my rambling...;)

I remember years ago, when I first got into TØP, I was listening to this in my mom's car. It was getting late and the sun was setting, and I remember this was probably the third time listening to it (I knew all the lyrics though, so I sang along). I remember near the end of the third verse, I began to break down. When I finally got to the 4th verse, I could barely mutter the lyrics, but I remember singing it with everything I had left to the sky, and as I am a Christian, I was talking to God. I cried for the rest of the ride home. My mom saw me crying when we were almost home, and she asked if I was alright. All I can remember saying was "I get it" and she left me alone. I went straight to bed with a cleared mind after I had calmed down. That was my first time being touched by one of the band's songs, and they went on to save my life on countless occasions. I'm just glad to be alive today.

I love this interpretation. As a Christian myself I likened the voice to God talking to Tyler. Step out of the crowded line, He welcomes u with open arms. Yet it could be about being suicidal and needing the voice on a daily basis to prevent him acting on the intrusive thoughts especially considering his mental state on this album.

I mostly agree - but I think 1) They are marching to their death. 2) The tedious path is the one without God and inevitably leads to death. 3) He chooses to see, hear, and follow God (on Earth and eternally) - but the next thing he knows he's doing what all the non-believers are doing (sinning). It's a constant cycle of following the others to your death, and following God. As a tie in, Sherman's March to the Sea was about laying destruction as you go ... kinda' like sin ...

William Boared the song says the thing calling him is what puts him back in line, that's why I understood it more as God giving him his calling but not taking him from the world itself. Interpreting that the path he follows is life and falling into the sea is death so God doesn't kill him to remove him from this boring, void lifestyle but instead takes him up to give him purpose despite of the surroundings he'll have back in line(life) and for him to eventually make it to the end of land (death) but with a fulfilled life. Well idk, I took it that way at least.

March to the sea seems very similar to the Jumpsuit music video with Tyler blindly following the Bishop in a trance almost until he looks up to see Josh and the Banditos and decides to take a chance to break free. Until the bishop captures him again and he is forced to continue in that march

Personally I don't see the spaceship as specifically God in the Christian sense but more as whatever motivates a person to kind of step out of line, question what they know, and refuse to conform to whatever they're told to do. Whether that's a religion, a social group or movement, or some other outside influence, the ambiguity in the song lets people fill in for themselves. I'm agnostic, so I didn't pick up on the Christian symbolism that seemed obvious to you.

I think the fourth verse signifies people really trying to change their life, but not being able to. In verses 1-3 he’s marching with all these strangers, and he starts to realize that the line is dead. But in verse 4 it says “Then you put me back in my place so I might start another day, and once again I will be in a march to the sea.” This makes it sound like he finally made the big change, but really, nothing changed at all.

My theory is the voice in his head saying "follow me instead" is him thinking for him to follow his passions instead of "falling in line" and having to get the same job as others in the line.

I love that the end of Chlorine takes us back to the March, as he's right on the edge of falling into the sea, but he's been weathered down in his feeling like he's not committed entirely one way or the other, but he's asking if he can still have a house in heaven (imo, but houses are also a very biblical symbol for things outside of heaven) despite his brokenness

  • @elikirk2800

The song is about Josh. Josh sometimes wears an alien mask, and is referred to in some promotional material an an alien, which explains the spaceship line. He's basically explaining how Josh is an actual alien from space who abducted Tyler. In the beginning, Tyler feels like he's dying with every step, which implies that he is yearning for more. Also. The society that he is among doesn't value emotion (heaven forbid they see you cry). Tyler initially didn't believe that Josh was actually from space because he "fell in line" and followed what society expects people to believe, that aliens aren't real. After Josh abducts him, Josh decides to live life as a human alongside Tyler. He can't do this, however, if Tyler knows about him being an alien. So he wipes his memory, "puts him back in his place," but gives him music to express himself with without upsetting the marchers. This is his sense of purpose. Josh also implanted a dream in Tyler's head, which this song was inspired by.

I think this song is about our paths with God in our lives vs without God. When sin entered the world, we changed paths and were on a path that lead to death. Then Jesus came and served as a bridge for us to get back on the path to life and get back to God.

i am a moslem and i was a clique since 2016. and i would say there is nothing wrong when i'm listening to a song that means something more "religious". even if they are christian, or if there is a lot of their songs that tells us and talking about his journey to god, or something that seems more religious. i wouldnt say that all religion is same. and idk but i feel really happy if i hear people finally find their peace (god, wife, family, etc). the most important thing is that we live peacefully, even if we are different.

i think that another possible meaning of the spaceship is creativity as it involves being original, different, and creating which means a lot of thinking, usually out of the box, and it is also often about expressing your feelings as well as causing strong emotions - it basically is everything that the emotionless marchers aren't

Great video! I discovered the deep well of emotion and philosophy that is TOP last summer and have found myself relating to their music more than any other music I've found. There have been lyrics I've wondered about and just discovered this channel and have enjoyed watching the videos. I still have a question on this song- the last couple of lines "so then you put me back in my place, so I might start another day, and once again I will be, in a march to the sea" seems to be God undoing what he has done in the rest of the song. If God saved him out of a meaningless march, why would he get "put back" in the meaningless march to the sea? I would love to hear other peoples thoughts on what this means. Thanks!

I thought it was about suicide where the line is depressed people. The spaceship is hope for another way. The stranger in front of him is someone who is already dead or is about to commit suicide. The sea is death. When he looks left and right he has a small shred of hope for another way because there is still part of him that wants to live. The emotionless marchers who say "this line is the only way" are depressed people who think that death is the only way. He sees the space ship out of the corner of his eye because he barley sees it but he can't miss it.

  • @Nezumi99

This song is about Tyler being suicidal. It's how and genuinely people who are suicidal just see the only way out is death. "I look left and right sometimes, but I fall in line" is like he might think about to stop but agin his depression beats him. Then when he talks about spaceship I think he referencing to God since in Self Titled he dedicated a lot of songs to Him. In thr end of the song he say "take me up, silver door cause I don't wanna march here anymore" he asks god to help him cause he doesn't want to be depressed and suicidal. "I realised that this line is dead so I follow you instead" he rather find his feith than to just let the negative feeling catch him. The last sentece "you put me back in my place so I can see another day and once again I will be to the March to the sea" its how now he can live normal life and slowly naturally go to death

this is a good explanation. i never thought of that one because what i thought it meant you are fighting a battle in your head and you are walking to the sea and you fall asleep (so you die/take your life) so its like the person in front of him is the devil and the devil is trying to take over Tyler but the spaceship is God trying to make him to change is mind and not let the devil take over him. he asks why he is there because he doesn't actually want to die. he wants to feel free but he cant escape this line. God finally drags him out and tells him that you wont be free by ending your life. listen to God instead of the devil. trust God with all you got. then he closes the door and is finally free from his thoughts. locks the devil out and says no. my thoughts on this was basically about mental health, mainly on depression.

I realize I’m late to the game but just discovered your videos now. This song comes to mind every time we have political turmoil in our country. The line “about this time every year” and the reference to look right and left is very political to me. I tend to lose my way when I get wrapped up in a political debate. We fall in line one way or another and follow that crowd. This song’s reminder to “follow me instead” pulls me back to God and following a life of faith and Christianity instead. It’s amazing to me that the song is so deep in meeting to me in that way yet still might not be what he meant.

This is one of my favourite TOP songs, so I'm really glad you did a video on it. I too am a Christian so my initial though is that it's God calling out to him to leave the world lead by terrible morals (modern culture in media, music etc), and while I still think that's true I do think this is one of Tyler's many cases of multiple meanings in his songs. I think the song could also be about morality and lifestyle, with him trying to combat either the negative morals of the world around him, or the fact he wants to live a more positive lifestyle but the world is so full of the opposite, it's hard for him to be slightly abnormal in the world's eyes (I got this from when he 'sees a spaceship in the sky', but the abnormalness to the world could also be about his faith). However (I have a lot of ideas on this songs meaning lol), it could also be about his profession and its difference to the rest of the world, with the 'line' possibly mimicking people commuting to a dead end office job, whereas Tyler wants to use his music to express himself, but he has to do that while combating what the world tells him to do (I mainly get this from the final 4 lines of the song). It's such an interesting song as I honestly believe there is no one meaning to it, especially since if you listen to the rest of the self titled album, it's very experimental (almost edgy) and vague lyrically. I'm going to say that the main overall meaning of the song is they struggle with Tyler's personal beliefs and ideas on life, and the rest of the world's ideas. How he wants to live this opposing lifestyle but he can't escape being trapped by modern life. Until he has an epiphany (the voice, which could be God), and decides to follow it but understands that following the voice won't make the world a better place, only give him a new goal in life personally for him. But that's just my thoughts. Again it's so vague and I don't think there is almost any wrong interpretation, which is what I love about twenty one pilots!

I always thought this song was about war (in my mind particularly WWII) the 'strangers back' being as said, a strangers back, then putting you (or Tyler) behind someone else that he doesn't know. No one looking up would also indicate that they (weather it be the allies or enemies) will see that you are scared showing weakness...thats just what i think it is (or was)...cheers for the video! I thought this song was about like all the mental problems he goes through and that some people will just accept that as who they are. The voice in his head is like a friend or someone trying to take him away from that ‘march to the sea’ and put him back in his place. But I suppose either could be right?

If you think of the lyrics in March to the sea, it sounds like baby turtles. When they walk (march) to the sea and then when the go to sleep, its becus they are whith their mother after getting from the beach to the sea

I believe March to the Sea is not referencing to conforming to society, but it's about battling depression and suicidal thoughts because, basically, the others are walking off a pier (committing suicide). But, he learns to cope with those thoughts by devoting himself to a religion, which gives him a reason to stay alive. ||-//

Pastel Fox I think the salt march was more of a "political" act against britains monopole in the colonial India...so i would say there is little chance that the song could be related to that...

As a christian I think it's about God and the line is non-believers the voice that says, "This line's the only way." is the devil or others that think there is no other way to live and are trying to keep others from christianity.

Do you know what soldiers do when they march, or are otherwise in some sort of formation? They fall in line. I guess you've never heard of 'Sherman's March to the Sea'. While the lyrics re probably not meant to be a direct reference to this historical event, I think it obviously makes references to it allegorically.

Though I do also believe the spaceship is a metaphor for God, if it isn't it could be a metaphor for someone living by their own belief; different from the line's beliefs. It would make sense to use a spaceship as a metaphor for this person because as Tyler sings about the line and where it's going as a routine and all he knows, someone living seperately from the line's beliefs would be an "alien" concept for him.

I think the song is about self harm. For me, Tyler thinks marching and falling in line is the only option, marching and falling in line means suicide, but there is a voice, a voice who can change Tyler, who can change his decision, who can make him happy, again. I don't know, hahaha.

I believe that this is about suicide ,the other people with suicidal thoughts or the "the emotionless marchers" are the ones in the line to pretty much end theyre lives by "falling sleep" or dying , they are telling tyler to just go ahead and follow them because they have no hope left " this line's the only way" , and so another person maybe a friend or god is telling them to not follow the line and "follow them insted" ,Nice video ♥ |-/

okay, here's my theory.... (I'm not saying this version is correct it's just my thoughts) I like to think that the line Tyler's following is a metaphor of suicide (depression, suicidal thoughts...) and he's following it because he thinks it's the only way to escape the war inside his head with his hope and denial/bad thoughts. when he says "my eyes have focused on the end of land" he's focusing on his plan to take his life, I also think that "then a voice inside my head says, *follow me instead*" is God or his hope is telling him *no, this is not the answer. follow me and I'll help you*. then Tyler is back into reality and realized what he did and stopped but he also knows that that his demons aren't going away forever and he's gonna have to have that war in his head again the next day.. hopefully that made sense. words aren't enough to explain the complexity of human thought...
