TWA Last Flight 881 from Athens, Greece: April, 1997

After 51 years of Service, TWA closed down its station at Athens (ATH), Greece. It was a very sad, emotional day for the Athens employees, and for TWA. This video was created to have a special memory not only of that particular day in April of 1997, but for the many years of dedicated service to the traveling public. TWA served many destinations from Athens in addition to New York, such as Rome, Paris, Cairo and Tel Aviv. Please see The Last TWA Flight 880 to Athens, Greece: April, 1997 at • The Last TWA Flight 88...
I do not own the music rights on this video. My apologies for the lack of clarity in the video content, and even more I am sorry it took me so many years to post this! Thank you for watching.

To think that only 10 years prior to that, TWA was the largest airline across the Atlantic. How sad must it have been to have been flight staff during this rapid decline. Carl Icahn should be ashamed of himself.

Yes, Carl Icahn was the killer. There was deregulation, bad management and bad contracts, but Icahn walked away with full pockets and the airline was bare bones. I remembering seething in rage with Mr. Trump kept floating Mr. Icahn's name as a key financial adviser.

Anyone who knows him pretty much hates him. Even recently he is trying to now to take over the relatively well run Kohl's Department store because he does not understand the Amazon return policy they have allow people to return their Amazon products they don't want to them, get their money back, and then buy a replacement or something else in the department store. This has been showing to work (and profitable) but he wants to get rid of it saying it is a stupid waste of money. Hopefully his attempt to take it over is defeated because he will load it up with debt selling the land the stores are on and bankrupting the chain.

It was not Carl Icahn, as bad as he was, who pulled TWA out of Athens. He left in 1993. It was the cost cutter, new elected TWA CEO Gerald Gitner, the founder of People's Express, who made that decision along with decimating the international operations of a once proud global airline. He had also sold Pan Am's Pacific routes to United for peanuts when he worked at that airline.

@@williamelgin6873 You are wrong. It was the siphoning of TWA funds to create TWA Corp. Carl just swept the FOD they left. The Corp. then divested the Airline. Carl was chosen by the IAM in fear that Lorenzo would take control. You had to be there to understand. Ask what happened to TWA Corp and the money?? Who owns Century 21, Hilton ect. now??

I watched another video that said American Airlines totally screwed over the incoming TWA employees after the acquisition and only 3000 remained at the time of the post. I despised American anyway and that didn't help because TWA was my favorite airline and the only one I flew until they were gone, at which point I switched to Delta and then Virgin America, which we've now also lost to Alaska. TWA is the reason I loved the L-1011. I had my Flaps 10 book for years and years and got wings visiting the cockpit - like 8 of them. I miss this airline and this era deeply. Thanks to everyone who worked there for making flying such a love for me.

I read once that one of the reasons TWA pulled out of a lot of Europe is that some outstations had huge local staffs that couldn't be fired because of local labor laws so ending service was the only way to pare down operations.

Wonder if they could have survived if 9/11 hadn't happened. Realistically they would have been swallowed up either way and all trace of them purged. As time goes on fewer & fewer airlines will exist thanks to mergers & takeovers. The US government should have stipulated that merged airlines maintain separate branding & identities to prevent that but pigs might fly meanwhile

A relative of mine worked as one of the flight crew managers on those round trip routes for many years. On another note, fast forward a few years, Athens has a new airport but very little has changed. They were too cheap to add about another twenty jetways which are needed so the net result is that a lot of people still are shuttled out on those cattle car busses…. On a happier note now in June 2023 it was reported in business news that Carl the crook lost 15 billion dollars of his net worth, KARMA
