How To Get Away With Murder deserves to be on this list

Hmm maybe, not a bad idea
I adore Penny Dreadful! I was so sad when it ended after 3 seasons. One of the best Victorian gothic/horror shows ever made imo. I think it's extremely DA bc most of the characters are from classic literature, and it explores themes pertaining to that literature.

I highly recommend the TNT original series, The Librarians. It was about a group of people recruited to recover mystic artifacts for an ancient library. The franchise started with three made-for-tv movies that had a strong Indiana Jones feel, followed by four seasons of the series, which is where the dark academia feel really became noticeable.

YES It is my absolute comfort show. Also they have recently announced that there will be a spin off called "The Librarians: The next chapter" so they might try out some new things in terms of aesthetics

Yessss this is one of my comfort shows and I'll never let it go, still devasted by the cancelation
I feel Pretty Little Liars fits as well? Close group of friends, often at school, lots of murder and secrets. The school, town and families seem to be very rich so they have some "old money" vibes. Can be visually dark and the characters can get pretty obsessive/passionate. I wonder if anyone else thought of this show while watching this video

Absolutely! I was actually surprised not to see this listed, but then to see others that weren’t actually set in a school. I feel like the main box that needs to be checked for dark academia is the ACADEMIA part!! Haha and SO much of PLL took place in their schools! Not to mention the general very dark videography, the murder, the lies, the secrets, the old money aesthetic that Spencer’s family has etc. this would have been close to the top of my list!! Good thinking!
It's an older series but Inspector Morse was very dark academia. The book series by Colin Dexter is excellent.

Have you seen "Endeavour"? It's about Inspector Morse when he first gets out of Oxford and starts to work with the police. It's a great show. Fantastic.

@@kpaxian6044 I loved Endeavour also. In fact I liked it so much I couldn’t watch Inspector Morse because of the change of the presentation of the character.
I loved "A Discovery of Witches;" I binged it!🖤

Loved the books and the series
I would add "The Eclipse" from Thailand to the list. It's set at a boarding school, it got a murder Mystery in it, a curse, a special club of that school (a bit of gay romance as well)

You must watch the whole of Young Royals! Its so so awesome and worth it!
This was a great list! I love that you included Gilmore Girls. Definitely on the lighter side but the old money and academia aesthetics are perfect! Also definitely would include Pretty Little Liars. Heavily set in their school, murder, dark, lies, secrets, friend group, old money etc it’s spot on, I enjoyed most of that show, and I’m looking forward to checking out these others, I haven’t seen many, so I’m looking forward to it! Thanks so much! Great video!
I don't like horror, and I definitely don't watch horror, but I love Penny Dreadful! It's dark and a bit scary, but not horror, even though the characters are the classic horror characters from Gothic literature - Dr Frankenstein and his monster, Dracula, Dorian Gray etc. And that's how it earns its Dark Academia stamp, because it's DA in the same way those classical Gothic horror books are DA. Maybe not set in an academical setting, but they are the books that the academic students would read, I imagine! So yes - Penny Dreadful absolutely qualify as DA, I think, and even if you don't like horror, give it a try - it's not that scary, and it's absolutely beautiful, and it's so good!

Completely agree! I was soo sad when they ended the show after just 3 seasons 😢. Everything (costumes, set design, acting, script, cinematography, themes) about this show was phenomenal and I've yet to find any other similar type shows that even come close.

Thx for making it easier for me the next time i need to explain to someone my tastes. I really hate horror, but i love goth.
i love your chair, that's sooo great!!
I would also recommend how to get away with murder. My friend convinced me to watch it by telling me that it was like the secret history but about law students. I haven't finished it yet, but it's pretty good so far! :)
Hannibal definitely has the obsession aspect.
Definitely The Queen's Gambit and The Magicians!
Also: 1. Enola Holmes on Netflix 2. His Dark Materials on HBO Max (Now Max 🙄) 3.A Series of Unfortunate Events on Netflix 4. Outlander (not academia but if you like fantasy History) 5. Elite on Netflix 6. American horror story coven 7. The Moth Diaries (Sapphic Gothic Boarding School Thriller) 8. Cracks (2011) 9. The Awakening (2011)
I watched some of your DA movie recommendations and they didnt disappoint (cant believe there were some I missed watching before - Like minds and Dreamers for example are now one of my favourites) so now I can't wait to put these series on my list too thank you so much ❤ Btw one of favourite series definitely has DA vibes in my eyes is A series of unfortunate events - just one of my personal recommendation
The first season of Gossip Girl.
Love your videos 😭💝 ,you are a real life da character.imma jealous
Hi ! Did you watch ARES? I'ts a Dutch horror tv show. It's dark and weird but SOOOOOOO DA.
Just started watching The Magicians with my husband and You season 4. Both of them are so good!!!
Lots of shows I love in here and some I need to see! Love Sherlock, Riverdale, Gilmore Girls, Queen's Gambit, Wednesday, Sabrina.....
You, one of the best series out there.
I love dark academia TV shows and I wish they would make Night school books into a TV series this would fit it perfectly!
Oh I had never heard of The Magicians but it sounds amazing! 😯
I was thinking of midnight club as well. Like its not da but fits the vibe. Just like the movies fallen and the covenant
FINALLY A MAGICIANS FAN! i love the magicians and i reccomend it to all of my friends who are adult potterheads, but no one follows my advice. it is top tier.
😍😍 exactly the video I was looking for

Love the fantasy!
Room's looking cool.
I would add The Alienist
One of my favs- the knick on 1900's medicine
The Magicians is amazing!!!
Umbrella Academy, Shadow and Bone, Enola Holmes.
The order also dark academia series that i love so much.
Hannibal (series): Hannibals office (primarly featured in Seasons 1&2) is wonderful airy and distinguished in its athmosphere. Star Trek: Picard S02 E01/E02. Not the best season of this series in terms of Star Trek Lore, but the decor and furniture of Jean-Luc Picard's Living Room/Library/Study in the Chateau Picard is exquisite dark academia. The fall of the house of usher: the usher family mansion and roderick usher office is insanely stylish dark academia. Do I need to mention "The Crown" or "Succession"? Filthy rich people living in luxurious palaces.
I see someone already suggested Ares (Netflix) which is really good. Secret society weirdness. Hannibal is also great
Could you do a video about art ideas to get out of art block.
One more but it is more Fastasy... Though there is a library and books are featured. The aesthetic may be of interest. Carnival Row. Maybe that is Gothic Academia.

I think of Carnival Row as steampunk. But watch it, it was amazing!
If you're even slightly into the DA aesthetic then go straight for ITV's Lewis/Endeavour/Morse! It's detectives solving murders in oxford, generally on cases that have a connection to the university, and with mysteries that centre on things like poetry, music, crosswords etc (there's literally an Endeavour episode where the killer stages his murders like opera deaths). All done with a very tongue-in-cheek 'Oxford, am i right?' attitude Endeavour's the most DA as it's a bit darker and also has a period setting. Lewis is very cosy (though these days you have to squint past Laurence Fox a bit). Personally Morse is a bit slow for me, but it's a classic nontheless 📚
Brideshead Revidited is very classical DA, I haven't seen it since the 80s though, but I loved it then!
the thing is is that a I like fantasy and dark academia, and I'm trying very hard to find a balance, because I don't want to give either of them up. does anyone have any recommendations?
Great video!
IF I MAY ADD.... Carnival Row is right up there!!!!!
Midnight Club is sort of a sequel to the kid's show Are You Afraid of the Dark? in which the kids of the Midnight Society sneak out at night to gather round a fire and tell the tales macabre. You could also add many of David Suchet's Poirot episodes, for that matter.

How to get away with murder Law students try to get away with murder. The first few seasons are amazing! Very Dark Academia
No one writes dialogue better than Tana French
I know it's old, but Twin Peaks definitely fits. Definitely.
Wednesday fits id say sure its more of the fantasy dark academia but still
The Lost Symbol was a good DA TV show based on the novel by Dan Brown. The only thing is that I think it was canceled after the first season.
❤
The Witcher IMO couldn't get any darker so I think it should be on the list😊

@@athomewithamandaIt's going to be unavoidably marked down because it is a half-arsed American Gothic adaptation of Archie Comics, as is The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

@@thoughtengine “half arsed” is an opinion. I didn’t read the Archie comics, so I didn’t need to compare it- and I don’t really think it’s fair to compare anyway- a live-action adaptation of a cartoon on a paper, is never going to be exactly the same, nor should it be- because it’s consumed in a completely different way with different senses involved … That all being said…. My comment was simply pointing out the fact that it fits the list of requirements traits set by people who enjoy Dark Academia. Not, if people like it as much as a comic book or not- 🤍

Magicians is my favorite! Great recommendations 📚📖🪄 Wish they made more of Discovery of Witches. Not into the horror and gangster though. To each there own, but I don’t consider those DA.
