TV Moments That Took Things Too Far

Ойын-сауық

In this golden age of television, writers can get away with pretty much anything. Even if the major networks are opposed, you can probably put your edgy show on cable or HBO. However, there have been a few moments when TV shows took things too far and ended up offending a lot of people, whether due to racial stereotypes or poor handling of hot button issues.
From the Seinfeld episode set during a Puerto Rican Day parade to the most unlikely (and most inappropriate) sitcom star of all time, let’s take a look at some TV moments that took things too far.

+Bret .Maverick Actually, I'm highly inclined to agree with this statement. +Gregory Samuel Teo Oddly, I don't think I've ever been into a series enough that I've ever felt the inclination to do so. Admittedly, there were some that by the time they did pull the plug, it felt right or they'd milked it so long that I'd been waiting for it, though if done in the second or third season, I'd have been livid. It's pretty much this reason my uncle doesn't watch any "new show" until it's passed its third season... apparently, he had a lot of great shows get canned too early.

The show had children in it, and the word "Children" in the title. And it was on TV during prime time, and later on, after school. The makers knew it would be seen by children. They didn't care. All television is watched by children. TV people know that -- because American broadcasting is legally considered to be in the public realm -- whatever is being done on TV has the same status as if it were being done on a street corner outside an elementary school. TV people are the ones who have popularized the idea that when THEY are inappropriate in front of children, it's somehow the PARENTS' fault. It's like a pervert flashing your kid on the subway, and then claiming that if you were a good parent, your kid wouldn't have been on the subway in the first place. Legally, American airwaves belong to the American people, just like national parks. They are leased by companies to broadcast shows. But just because you've paid your lease doesn't mean you can do whatever you want on somebody else's property. Cable TV, on the other hand, is considered private.

Shows like Simpsons, and family guy are equal opportunity offenders, no race, religion or nationality is sacred. and that is why nobody should get offended or take them seriously. if anything, they poke fun at stereotypes. and demonstrate how ridiculous some actually are. As for shows like two broke girls, really? the whole show has had sexual innuendo since day one, if you get offended by a naked barbie, you should not have been watching this adult show in the first place. same goes for Married with Children.

I never saw the show until syndicated re-runs, but I remember hearing my co-workers raving about season 1. Fast Fwd to 19 ??, several years anyway and when I tuned in, they were a few seasons in, and I HATED it! I thought it was intended to make it's audience "less intelligent than they were when they came in" trailer trash" humor at it's finest. But when they re-ran Season 1 for the second time (cause I had missed the first), I saw a MUCH better, "less stupid/trashy" tv sitcom where I didn't keep thinking I smelled Al's B.O. while he sat in front of the set in his "wife-beater" lol. I SAW the appeal and WTF happened to this show???

"why do feel that you have the freedom to stop others from watching.?" That is the problem with conservatives (and honestly all who get offended on behalf of others, as well). Ultimately the result is the same: the few people who do eventually agree generally only do it out of fear (peer pressure or genuine) and the rest are more adamant than ever against them.

GTFO with that soft BS, change the channel lil biatches, it's people like you who began the snowball effect of political correctness , and now we have over a dozen genders and every single one of them has a mental illness which they are told by vilecrats it's their RIGHT messing up young kids 100 fold more than anything married with children has ever shown. There are 2 genders, stick the PC up yours if you're a looney liberal and/or believe there are more than 2 , or if you want to act militant and police everything on TV so that you may never feel offended because you feel it lacks 'good taste'.

Most ironic aspect of this... those complaining about what's influencing their children fail to grasp that what they are complaining about isn't meant for children. Said complaint signifies the person complaining is both a busybody looking for and issue, as well as a poor parent who is exposing their children to what they deem to be harmful. The shows cited are not for children and are aired at a time when they have no legitimate reason to be watching TV.

Tbf, it was a pretty graphic episode with rather shocking content for network TV at that time (mid 90's). It also happens to be one of the best written and acted episodes of the entire series. Most X-Files fans agree it is definitely in the top 10 best. That said, network TV in the mid 1990's was still pretty prudish by today's standards. You may or may not remember, since I have no idea how old you are, but I was in my 20's in the 90's and remember the strict FCC standards well.

Something that I've learned over the years: People who get way too upset about something - especially something as fictitious and “make-believe” as television - usually get that way because they see some truth in what they are getting upset over, wish to deny that truth, get even angrier (this time at themselves because they actually believe the “spoof”), and overreact to the situation. Case in point: The Simpsons' Brazil episode. As was pointed out, it later proved to be based in fact; things really WERE the way that the episode depicted them. Because of this truth that the Brazilian president would rather deny than actually do something about, he lashed out at FOX. It should have been a wake-up call for him; he chose instead to deny the truth right before his eyes, and blame someone else for it. Classic.

I agree with the criticism, but not why you think. I watched the episode, and I think it would have been funnier if it had had the four of them in the car during the traffic jam for the entire episode, rather than have them get out and walk around. It would have been like the "Chinese Restaurant" episode or "The Parking Lot" episode, where the entire ep has the four characters in one place, and the humor relies on their dialogue. IMO it would have made for a funnier episode.
