I was TV licence free for over 3 years and still am now (Never watch live TV mainly just prime or netflix). Recently with the last 6/7 months while i was at work my wife had a TV licence goon turn up to our property and demanded she let him in to check for an Ariel bla bla to the point he was trying to make out the piece of paper he had on his clip board was a warrant for entry but refused to show her it when asked. when she refused him entry because our son then at the time who was only a few months old was asleep in the living room the man in question then done the old baliff boot in the door way to prevent my wife from closing the door on him. After about another 10 - 15 minutes of him still demanding to be let in, luckily my sister who was Kent police at the time popped by to visit her nephew saw what was going on flashed her warrant card at the guy and he shot off like a rat out a drain pipe. So whatever you do people dont let these scum bags into your property.

I'm 34, I've NEVER paid tv license and I've watched what I want since day 1. You don't have to pay them, tell them to go away when they knock at door. It's simple.

100% and im a solicitor here in Scotland and its what everyone here does. Theyre not allowed to look in the property specifically the living quarters here once theyve been told to leave. You need to tell them to leave indefinately here or they come back after 3yr, they are on a 3yr reset and they only stop that when you make it clear they've NEVER to come back. There are also two methods to stop them sending letters which is to issue them with a warning that they are causing distress to an occupier or you can pay a solicitor £70ish or get the citizens advice to issue them a letter warning them that the 3 strikes for harrasment is in effect. The 3rd time they contact you from that point you can have capita in court for harrasment. They stop immediately when solicitors get involved and black list the Address. They also dont visit parts of Scotland that are known for being violent towards them.

Cancelled mine 4 years ago. I don't miss TV in the slightest. I have loads more time to do more productive stuff

There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING that I would want to watch from the BBC or anything else on television. 🇬🇧🌧️

I have been license free for over a decade now. Truth is that it is very difficult for TVL to secure evidence that a person is watching / recording live TV illegally. You're under no obligation to engage with them in any way, and you can write to TVL and remove their implied rights of access that should prevent any visits. Simply don't answer the door if they visit, do not answer any of their questions, do not make any statements and do not sign anything. They have no legal powers of entry without a search warrant but they'll often threaten this especially if they think that you are home alone. Treat them as door-to-door salesmen as that's all they are, looking for either their commission or to try and trick the homeowner/tenant in to admitting something verbally or by signing something. They'll use intimidation, threats, coercion to get what they want so it's best to avoid any contact with them. If you do end up having to deal with them, filming them quickly changes their tune. If they think no one is recording that's when they'll use all of their methods against you.

If this gets picked up it would be nice to see it addressed: What legal obligation does a person have to engage with or notify TVLicensing (Capita) of their exemption from needing a TV licence? For additional context, I find it interesting that a retailer is allowed to share my name and address with TVL when I purchase a TV (used to work in Currys, saw it happen all the time). When I moved into my new build property to which no TV equipment has ever been ordered, first bit of post I got was from TVL. Presumably TVL gets some notification from the builder at the point the aerial is installed or they crawl land registry for new addresses. I went through their online portal as 'the legal occupier' and they give you a 2 year grace period, then the letters start again, cycling through 'investigation opened', 'visit authorised ', 'will you be in' and possibly some variation on 'final notice'. I've never been visited and I've never hooked my TV up to the aerial point. I just can't be bothered reporting to a private company what I am doing within my own home when I'm aware that it's within the confines of legislation I'm capable of reading and haven't seen an obligation of owners to routinely report their exemption from the need to buy a licence.

I wanted to frame the letter I got from BBC saying I hadn't logged in for over 2 years and so they were closing my account. No BBC useage for 5+ years

I do not need a licence as I only watch Netflix or Amazon….two things… one - should be able to delete the iplayer from the smart TV…mine cannot… Two - what about those awful bullying letters one receives from time to time…

Thanks BBB! My biggest issue is literally watching BBC iPlayer; some stuff goes straight to that… r they trying to catch us out? We have a tv licence but we do, pretty much, only watch iPlayer… oh and the news if something is ‘kicking off’…! I think the BBC should just do what all the other stations do and have advertising! BBC aren't allowed to take advertising to broadcast in the UK, it's forbidden by government contract. BBC Worldwide (their commercial arm) makes good money selling DVDs etc all over the world but again, they're not allowed to use any of that money within the UK. BBC were also forced by the government to pay for all of the upgrades required to the broadcasting masts and equipment, to allow all TV channels to broadcast on digital services. None of that was funded by any commercial TV company but they all use the network. Digital TV was forced on the network to free up the UHF band for military use, so, by and for the government but paid for entirely by the BBC. S4C the Welsh language TV station owned and operated by Ch4 is largely funded by the TV licence fee too, more just an interesting fact than a valid argument, unless you're trying to learn Welsh.

Create a new Iplayer account. Different name and address/postcode. They can't say you need one by linking your account. If you want to watch live TV then make sure you install your antenna in the loft and make sure your TV can't be viewed from someone looking into the window. Tell them you don't need one and don't let any enforcement thugs into your house. Job done 👍. I have never ever paid for a TV licence in my entire life.

I remember a comment in a TV licence youtube where someone allowed an inspector into the house. The inspector asked if they knew how to use the TV equipment to receive live tv. They answered yes. They were succesfully prosecuted. The answer, don't let them in, or don't answer any question.

That's ridiculous considering most uses of a TV these days is for functions other than receiving television broadcasts.

Goon tried to state he had seen a tv from the street when i pointed out that he would require a 30ft long neck to see into my living room he backed down. Same goon then appeared after my partner bought a portable tv for our daughter and asked her by name if she had a licence she replied truthfully with a stern No. The goon proceded to force entey and read my partner her rights. Two mins later i walk in through the front door with a mate from work who is MDP i confront the goon as to whats going on and my partner breaks down in tears. The goon proceeds to inform me she has been cautioned and is being done for licence evasion. I produce my e recipt of payments as its in my name. My mate who is ministry of defence police informs the goon he has 30 seconds to leave or he will arrest him with the intention of handing across to our local force the goon 💩a brick and left like the clappers. He later lost his job for illegally entering our building by means.of.deception and illegally entering our property with my mate giving evidence. Big win for us as these goons will never bother us again. Big win for our building as one of our residents is a police officer albeit MDP.

I ceased buying a TV licence in 2006 and don't miss live TV at all. A massive saving of over £2,000 so far. Another reason for stopping is my protest at ridiculous salaries to presenters, and more recently, the use of offensive language on entertainment programs broadcast at 1830, weekdays on Radio 4. Occasional hotel stays and looking through a TV magazine, allowed me to confirm my view! I only view items on KZread, or similar free to view internet based content, and I buy DVD videos 10 for £1 from charity shops or occasional sets from online suppliers (DVDs don't get erased). I watch my choice of interesting channels such as this. Thanks for another great video.

Future generations probably won't believe people were prosecuted for not having a TV licence.

To elaborate this counts for watching a stream of anything online that is simultaneously being broadcasted on live TV, just because you aren't watching the TV broadcast you are still technically watching live TV. To be honest, unless you watch sports or are avidly into BBC productions, I don't know why anyone pays for the license.

Cancelled mine 3yrs ago. As you must plug in the ariel on most modern TVs, they can no longer say. You're plugged in, you must be watching. As the TV won't work without it.

Downside, MIL moved in, relevant upside, she gets a free TV licence, so we don’t need to buy one now.

Cancelled mine about 2 yrs ago, told them i did not want to watch their biased, woke TV. I have subscribed to Netflix and choose my own shows to view. I received 3 threatened letters and an'agent came to my door when i was out, a card was put through the door. I contacted the BBC again and said i had informed them i would not be watching live TV and if they continued to harass me I would get legal advice. Got a letter saying they would contact me in 3 yrs to see if i had changed my mind. I won't.

Funny that because the police's idea of reasonable force is to twist your hands, arms and legs into all kinds of uncomfortable positions. What's good for the goose should be good for the gander but that isn't how it works in reality. Any normal person is then done for GBH or Assualt when really you were just using reasonable force.

In the USA, the licenses are paid for by the TV stations.

Successive Governments have failed to address this outdated licence fee. BBC must move to a subscription model.

you turn on your tv and select a channel, it’s that easy. So why don’t tv manufacturers supply tv’s that don’t give you the option of bbc. It can’t be that hard, if you don’t have the option (app) Then you can’t watch it.

Have spent a wee while arguing with a friend over the TV Licence today. I said you can't watch ANY live TV on ANY channel without one (e.g commerical channels ITV, C4, C5 and all live and +1 programmes from any cable stations). He said you CAN watch commercial channels with NO licence, as the licence only pertains to anything live/on demand from BBC - and owning the equipment to receive the live broadcasts. Who's right?

Communications Act 2003, Section 363 (1)A television receiver must not be installed or used unless the installation and use of the receiver is authorised by a licence under this Part. (2)A person who installs or uses a television receiver in contravention of subsection (1) is guilty of an offence. So if you break point 1, you're guilty of an offence, so how do you NOT need a TV licence? I've been looking for answers on multiple channels but no one answers.

I have moved into a flat with an aerial wire that is fitted along the floor but I do not watch live tv. I am slightly concerned however, that if an inspector turned up and they see the wire is there - even though it’s not connected they may not accept it is not in use. And I don’t see why I should have to remove it and damage the floor/wall. Any thoughts?

What about owning a smart tv where you have free view/Samsung TV plus/live tv available at the press of a button, but you never watch it? You always use KZread and streaming services? Where would I stand legally with that?

I've not had a licence for almost 13 years. Never signed the NLN declaration. Haven't had a letter since January, or a visit (that I know of) since March 2016, despite since having received several "10 days to get correctly licensed" letters, each followed by a "Your address has been scheduled for a visit" letter. I think they've given up on me. 😁

There's even more grey areas, like for KZread. You don't need a license for watching an individuals live stream, BUT sometimes eg. Sky Sports show a portion of their F1 shows live on KZread, and for that you are meant to legally have a license to watch.

The rules have changed now they are very crafty.

How can they prove it, though? They don't have the power to enter your home, and they can't track down who is receiving BBC transmissions with any degree of accuracy.

I know someone who doesn't even have a tv, still gets threatening letters about court n stuff! They just just go down a list seeing who ain't paying and auto send a 'frightening' threat of fines n such. Fools.

I cancelled my tv licence 9 years ago because I wasn't watching live streaming tv etc. Nor was I happy funding their propaganda. However, I still have to waste time every couple of years completing a repetitive (how many times do you have to state you don't need it?) online "No Licence Needed" form. I have a Netflix subscription and watch a lot of old stuff on KZread - more than sufficient. One odd thing, though - I have a smart tv, on which I can delete any app _except the iPlayer app!_ - it won't budge. I've not watched it in 9 years and I've no intention of ever watching it. Why don't the BBC just give up harassing people?

In 2011 in UK I bought a TV from Amazon and the second day a inspector came to my apartment asking me to pay for a TV license. I told him I bought it just to play PlayStation nothing more I don't want to watch any live channels then he told me you need to pay for a license because you a cable already installed in the apartment.

What I can't find an answer to is went do I need to pay the BBC to watch, for example, motogp live on an app I pay over £100 for, when bbc don't even show motogp?

Not just terrestrial stations. Stations broadcast on satellite require a licence. As do what may be described as professional stations broadcast on KZread. So, for instance, CNN broadcasts it's live station via KZread. That requires a licence. The BBC are somewhat opaque about the exact definition of what requires a licence on streaming services such as KZread. In effect, there is no definitive list.

I have a 4k 43" TV which I use as a reference/viewing monitor for video editing which I film on my camera, I don't receive any channels and my TV has no aerial connected, so I don't need a license I take. What should I do if they try to tell me I still need a license.

With no broadcast reception it is a *MONITOR*. One simple way to avoid doubt is to remove the TV antenna, assuming it's not in use. In my case, I've removed antennas, associated cables AND wall ports, so that would force the use of a portable antenna.. which I don't have.. and they are shit. 😅

So what exactly is live TV? I understood that live sport on Betfair is regarded as live TV. KZread streaming? I asked the licensing authority about Skype and did not get a definite answer.

I am a pensioner. Up until recently I have had a TV licence. Now I have decided not to watch live TV or BBC I player, but I have itv and Channel 5 catch up along with Prime , discovery and Britbox. I am not technical. I have managed to delete bbc I player from my screen but I have freeview and all the others above. My question is do they have to catch me in the act of watching live TV broadcast or is the mere fact my TV is still hooked up for it enough to prosecute? It seems a little unfair I have to replace my TV with one that cannot receive live TV? I would like to know your interpretation of the exact wording of the law please. Thank you Jeremy

Right you're a solicitor so ITV doesn't charge you for watching them so why do you have to pay a TV licence to watch ITV which is a free can you find out and let everybody know

So i do not watch anything live or recorded, i do have amazon prime netflix and now tv entertainment nothing live is watched at all, i am recieving emails saying i have a home visit scheduled so can i get done for any of this ?

Hi can you clarify sonething please. If i have bbc i player installed on my tv or other devices then can i be prosecuted for having them installed fron the factory . What about if i left it signed in when o had a l8cence but am still signed in by forgetting to sign oit etc?

Everyone you drop a tv licence video you sub rates go up is that why you keep doing them ?

What if you watch live foreign chanel through a diffirent device, by foreign I mean not broadcast or covered by UK?

It always used to be you needed a license to OWN the equipment.

How do I stop the government ,giving them payment ccjs for licence I don't have or need . Twice last year they did this in my absence and 40 pounds is alot from 200 benefit. I don't watch live or BBC.
