Tutorial Tuesday: Changing a Headlight Bulb/Wiring of a 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Learn how to replace the headlamp of a 2011 Hyundai Elantra as well as repair the wiring and plug that connects to the bulb itself. If you like this video be sure to give it a thumbs up and if you're not already subscribed please do that as well.
If anyone has any questions I will do my best to answer them but apparently Hyundai has a tendency to use slightly different parts to do the same thing for the same year and model so if something turns out to be way different I apologize. If you would like a link to the part I purchased off of ebay I will include a link below as well as some written instructions for the whole procedure.
The Awesomist covers a wide range of video topics and ideas all neatly categorized into specific play lists to keep everything organized. Topics include reviews, top 10 lists, technology, language, dancing, music and information, Travel Vlogs and How To Videos all with a humorous twist.

Step by Step:
The procedure for replacing the wiring and headlight bulb on a 2011 Hyundai Elantra is fairly straight forward.
1) Disconnect the Batter using a 10mm socket or wrench.
2) Remove two Phillips head screws near the front of the vehicle holding the headlight enclosure to the car.
3) Remove the 12mm bolt located up toward the windshield also holding in the headlight enclosure using a wrench or socket.
4) Disconnect the plug that powers the enclosure from the back of the enclosure.
5) Lift and pull the entire headlight enclosure out of the vehicle. This is a little tricky and definitely the most time consuming part of this project.
6) Open the headlight bulb compartment by twisting off the cap.
7) Twist to remove the existing bulb.
8) Disconnect the cable from the bulb by squeezing the tabs on the side.
9) Rotate plug so that two guide lines are facing up.
10) Mark wire on the right with a marker or tape to distinguish it from the other.
11) Cut both wires and strip the ends so bare wire is exposed.
12) Connect posi-lock wire connectors to the new cable plug.
13) Rotate the new plug so that the tab is facing up then connect other end of posi-lock connectors to the wires still connected to the vehicle being careful not to cross the wires.
14) Insert your new bulb and twist it back into the enclosure.
15) Replace the cap.
16) Place enclosure back into position.
17) Replace screws and 12mm Bolt.
18) Reconnect plug that powers enclosure.
19) Reconnect battery.
20) Test headlights.

This is the same problem I now have with my wife’s 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe sport, the dealer wants to sell me the whole headlight, they don’t sell the H11 harness. Am going to do just like you did, save myself $400 for the headlight .

Hi I'm about the replace an connector with both wires black colour. By marking one of them "the right (or left obviously)" how do you know which terminal of wire on the new connector you are going to wire together with your car wirings? It obvious does not say left or right on the new connector right? Hope my question makes sense, thanks!

+The Awesomist It is on the same side as yours and looks pretty similar with the burned plastic. Only difference is this one is a 2013. I'm hoping it will work because it looks like the same damn near setup all around. Found the wire/ connector you were referring to on ebay too. question, it looked like it had 3 connectors on it and I assume you only need the one? Do the other 2 just hang there?

+steelcurtain187 the connector I bought had 2 wires and I connected both. My headlamps have two wires as well. Not sure if that's the same on the 13, one thing about these cars is if they're manufacturered half way through the year or later they often have a mixture of parts. My wifes car is 2011 but has lots of parts for a 2012 which makes repairs a pain when it comes to buying replacement parts.

So I have the same problem with my 2009 Sonata, but the bulb harness is a H11B instead of an H11. I can find all types of harness for h11 but not H11B; I can find a conversion kit for H11 to H11B---so, do you think I can just cut the conversion in half and splice on the end with the H11B connections to my wires? Does that make sense?

Those popsi lock connectors you used are $10.00 on amazon. Can I just use the regular twist on connectors?

I have a 2011 Elantra, I’ve been having to replace the same low beam bulb over and over and I just saw that the wire is messed up. Will attempt to do this to see if the problem is fixed! Thank you! Btw, are the daytime running lights supposed to stay on even if you set the lights in the OFF position? Thanks! +1 subscriber

carlos alducin Oh my God dude, I have the same damn problem with my 2014 Sonata. I moved to a colder environment (from Bama) and this is the second year I've had to replace just about all my bulbs. And this time, the bulb didn't fix my right side issue. So frustrating!

+Juan vegas Mine has not burned again. I would check your fuse box make sure there's nothing wrong in there. If you have a short the wires will melt. Otherwise it could be the heat of the bulbs. Though I don't think there are any alternative options.

So let me ask, the dealer said he would have to replace the “harness” for the socket that looks just like the one in your video. Wants to charge 260$ out the door. Reason being, labor....said he would have to take off the bumper in order to replace the wiring harness? Does this sound right? It’s a 2012 but otherwise, same exact problem. Thanks for any feedback, and great video!

Nothing involving a dealership sounds right. $260??? What's the guy a doctor? Start investigating the wiring yourself. See if its burnt or melted. Harness is just this guy trying to make himself sound like he knows what he's doing. Dude it's a simple fix. Stop making it complicated.

I have a 2013 and the socket doesn’t have the two guide lines. Both sides look exactly the same and both wires are yellow. How can I figure out which side is which? Edit: nevermind, I got it. The bulb only fits one way because there a notch in the middle on one side and not the other. Easy peasy
