Turok is a first-person shooter video game developed by Propaganda Games, and published by Disney Interactive Studios (through its Touchstone Games banner) for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in February 2008. It was ported on to Microsoft Windows in April 2008.
The game is loosely based on the comic book series of the same title and is unrelated to the story and setting of previous Turok video games. Players assume the role of Native American space marine Joseph Turok, who is part of a team sent to a remote planet to apprehend General Roland Kane, a war criminal, who is Turok's former commanding officer. After crash landing, Turok discovers that the planet is home to all manner of dinosaurs, and must fight both the predatory creatures and Kane's private army on his mission to take down his former mentor.

I remember getting a N64 console as a teen and playing the Turok game for the first time and being amazed by the graphics and sounds as I played the game. This was the first time I ever saw amazing water and solar glare effects in a game, plus the fish in the water looked so real. Later I obtained Turok 2 and again I was blown away by the very smart A.I. of the enemies and the graphics/sound was definitely taken to the next level along with the environments, weapons and story.

I grew up with the N64 Turoks, they have not aged well. Except for a few cool weapons and great death animations, you're better off playing Perfect Dark. Turok Evolution tried to be more like Half Life, wasn't a bad game but pretty buggy. Turok 2008 was Aliens with dinosaurs. Wasn't the best FPS, but it was a fun game. It sold well enough to get a sequel, but sadly Disney shut down all their game divisions except for the devs behind Disney Infinity.

I personally enjoyed this game. I'll admit it certainly isn't for everyone and has some faults. It does have a COD with dinosaurs feel. If it didn't have good voice acting, stealth mechanic (with glory kills), and dinosaurs. I'd probably hate it. That being said I am sad it's kinda kept Turok in the dark for so long and no ones picked up the franchise to make another.

It's generic, very, but it is kind of entertaining sometimes. The build-up before meeting the dinos, the tall grass, the feeling that you are a badass former spec ops goon and god damn DINOSAURS - all that still warms my heart. Grew up with the N64 Turoks, they've aged terribly. Goldeneye and Perfect Dark are the best N64 FPS games. Turok is a dead franchise. The remasters did not revive the franchise. The comic books from the 90s were better than the games, actual story and characters. The games were just Doom clones.

I played Turok back when it came out, and then I promptly forgot about it until you made this review lol. You talked about how the weapons suck which is pretty accurate, but the bow was pretty fun imo. I just wanna say, I really love your reviews. Your personality, consistency and attention to detail is all really top-knotch. More importantly, you seem to be one of the only major game reviewers who remembers that there were actually games released in years 2006-2012. This was when I was in college and actually had time and money to play a lot of the middleware (a category that's all but disappeared now), so it's really nice to see reviews for the lesser-known titles of an increasingly distant era. Thanks!

@Dragoon-BB I have Turok Evolution and finished all of then. Evolution is the harder one, enemies could headshot instant kill you and they use this. Maps are large and sometimes confusing, there is not any collectibles this time, the only reason to explore is new weapons or some weapon upgrades. And there is the fly segments, which is the worst part of Evolution. How It compare to the 3 before? Is the weaker of the original series, but never a bad game, it still is Turok in all of it's essence, still have awesome weapons, the gore is superb (they shot at meat for the sound, it's amazing!) and is atmospheric coeherent with the previous installments. And for the record i have It on both PC and OG Xbox, the 2 best versions. If you wanna try It, Xbox version is the complete visuals version, even the PC version dropped some effects that are exclusive to Xbox, which is a shame, but on PC you can use any resolution (even 4k), it support widescreen (vertical -, sadly) and doesn't have framerate cap, you must turn v-sync on via driver. It support anisotropic filter but AA must be via driver too. So it's a matter of preference. It also support KB and mouse properly and gamepad.

I prefer Evolution and this reboot. The N64 Turoks aged terribly. Level design and AI suck. Story is nonexistent. The only positives are a few stand out weapons and the death animations. Goldeneye and Perfect Dark are by far better, especially Perfect Dark. The 90s Turok comics were great though, actual story and characters. Kept the more mature rating too. Doesn't seem the remasters revived the franchise. There was even a new Turok comic in 2017. Must've not sold well though as it only lasted a few issues.

If there's one thing I hated about the early HD era is how gray everything is. Even something like Turok, that takes place in a jungle, environments just have this Gears of War gray to it. It's so boring. I used to think it was just the Unreal engine, that's what it was good at so that's what developers created but then something like Guilty Gear Xrd comes along and proves that Unreal can do some super awesome stuff graphically. I grabbed it on the PS4 and was amazed but even the PS3 version of that game is beautiful. I guess color is for pussies or something because these dude-bro games never seem to use it aside from ketchup crimson for the blood effects.

I actually loved this game as a kid and replayed it recently and still enjoyed it. I think it is better without relating it back to the other games in the series. The knife being the best weapon in the game is something that the devs were going for - and actually pulled off which is hard to do in an FPS. In pvp you would hardly see other people walking around shooting, and if you did they would get their throat cut pretty quick. The constant dinosaurs added another exciting dimension to the game imo and I loved the setting - trapped in the jungle with a group of people surviving against all odds. I think it was good as Turok had generally been ridden to death and was heading toward being outdated after Turok 2. This is different to the general theme game companies go for - same thing over and over until it fails to sell. Where they said - let’s try something different. It definitely had its shortcomings but I would actually recommend it. Focusing on stealth gameplay as opposed to shooting to accentuate the knife.

So... In 1997 Turok started out as a console game, which later had PC ports. But in 2008 they had to "dumb down” Turok to have it work on consoles. Nah man, that's not fair enough. It's lazy developers.

We lost the ability to scroll through weapons, after weapon wheels became popular. The only thing that dumbed-down were the devs.

Massmarketing, make it mainstream. Not that the original Turok games are masterpieces either.

I'm kind of surprised you didn't mention the Knife more. I remember going through sections with raptors just with the knife because those Quick Time events often made it a tad bit too easy to kill them quickly.
