TURNING SOIL AND BURNING OIL. DISCING FOR HUNTING SEASON.

We wanted to use the Dirt Dog Tiller today but the PTO shaft is too long! So we pulled out the disc and are pleasantly surprised by the results.

If you're patient, and you are preparing areas like large garden plots, a disk is all you need from sod breaking to seed bed preparation. I use an 8 foot tandem disk behind an old Massey Ferguson industrial 20. (Old school I know, but it works!)

I'm not patient, haha! I know it can be done as I've shown it in these videos, but man does it take a lot of time compared to tilling.

When I farmed out in the panhandle of Oklahoma, 1200 acres, after harvest we always shredded the stalks of wheat or had a controlled burn then come in with a 24' offset disc go straight first then angle across the field. Then it was ready to list, 40" irrigation rows as we flood irrigated then ,now everybody uses circle sprinklers, and then it was ready to plant. Never had any sticks to plug up a disc of course no trees out there just Johnson grass and some weeds. Soil moisture makes all the difference on how disc's plow.

Try using both front , rear gangs in tandem with ground contact. Slow down a bit , let the disc work. A tiller can overwork Your ground if You overuse.

I did use the front and rear, I made an entire video trying all 1 Billion recommendations from viewers, haha. Go fast they say, go slow the say, add weight, level out, tilt, more aggressive, less aggressive. Haha, all this discing overworked my back. Rough ride!

  • @markziegler3551

definitely slow down a little. I would not be worried planting that seedbed. farmers don't use tillers, they use disks and field cultivators. a tiller works for gardens and gives you a perfect seedbed, a disk will give a farmer a good seedbed too, just remember that seeds don't need "perfect". The weeds grew just fine, didn't they. So will your seeds.

Enjoying the videos. Ive read the comments and it seems most lean toward a tiller for gardens and a softer bed. The discs do work as you have shown. Heres my 2 cents worth.....with the rising gas prices, the tiller does a quicker job. It may be over kill, but you had to make alot of passes to get to an acceptable result. Yes i too love spending time on a tractor and your in the a/c, but your also burning up a bunch of fuel too.

U need to try using a Moore boar plow to turn over plots the 1st time. Then use the disk to smooth out with a level wheel. When I was farming we used the plow to turn over corn stalks to that set on top of the ground all winter. Then we would disk ground to prep for planting.

A disc is perfect for that situation. Couple of tips from many years pulling a disc: Slow down a bit; lengthen the top link so the disc runs flat with both gangs making contact. Everyone I ever saw use a 3-pt disc pulled down on the front gang, especially when they were moving quickly.

Hey Mike, not sure if you saw my previous video, but all that weight on one row worked incredibly better than leveled out when doing a really rough sod busting. I used all the KZread comments and made a video on it. kzread.info/dash/bejne/m4aTlJV9p7Xak5c.html In this video, you can even see it in this video on a small strip of new sod by that post hole digger. First pass was with it leveled out which did next to nothing. I backed up and angled it with all the weight on one row and it did 10x better. That's the problem with these small discs. They don't have enough weight. I ran it level on the ground that was well worked. Believe me when I say I've tried every combination of speed, attack angle, and disc angle.

@@GoodWorksTractors did not see that video and will check it out. Yes, that weight on one gang is needed on the sod but im not sure about the worked ground. You're 100% correct about the weight of small discs

Disc is fine for previously worked soil. The problem is that you need a big machine to pull a disk that is heavy and big enough to work the soil.

I much prefer my Frontier 1066dh to my tiller. The tiller has its place for my garden or a very tight plot, but for my larger plots I gravitate towards the disc.

Depends on what you are planting, what type of disc and how much time you have. I can make a nice seed bed for corn with a 3 point lift disc. Takes about 4 passes after plowing. It takes more like 10 passes if you are doing a garden and still have a few large clumps.

Id suggest making your plots and screening cover less linear. Wildlife typically like a lot higher edge ratio, meaning greater amount of edges habitat relative to the area. One reason is greater habitat diversity within a smaller area, and the second is comfort. The closer they can be to escape cover, and especially bedding cover, the better.

Both sides of my family were and are farmers. I've never saw them disc that fast. Even when they plowed they didn't go fast. They would plowed a field first then use a disc a couple times then use a hare to bust up the clots.

Using a disk for primary tillage or seedbed prep really isn’t ideal. It works alright for food plots if you do a burn down application of herbicide a week or two prior. For seed bed prep on ground that’s previously been worked it tends to work ground too deep and results in planting depth being too deep. Ideally you disk and follow with a field cultivator to create an even and firm seedbed. I learned this after planting several hundred acres of soybeans into disked fields, the planter dropped the beans a full inch and a half deeper in disked fields than those we field cultivated. Resulted in my beans emerging 5 days later and those fields never canopied. Lesson learned.

  • @JCWren

What does "fields never canopied" mean?

  • @nickschaps4022

    @nickschaps4022

    2 жыл бұрын

@@JCWren it means the crops didn’t form a canopy. Same concept as a forest canopy. It shades the ground from sunlight and prevents weed germination. If crops fail to form a canopy it results in season long weed pressure. The beans failed to reach canopy because they were emerging from the ground 5-6days later than they should have. This occurred because planting depth was far too deep, because we used a disk to finish preparing the seed bed.
