Turning My Van Into A Portable NIGHTCLUB! Sound System!

Ойын-сауық

Today I am sharing the experience of how I updated my sound system and side panels! This was a hell of a project and one of the first projects I started when I got my van! It took a year, but it's finally done, and I couldn't be happier!

    Barry, I can't tell you how glad I am you're not one of those big squealies that confuses soundproofing with acoustic treatment Edit: Also sm0ll correction; Tweeters are tiny drivers that only push high frequencies (generally down to 3-5KHz; woofers push the mids and low mids and some bass (sometimes down below 100Hz); subwoofers push sub bass (generally ~80Hz and below) Also that stuffing in the sub box doesn't technically extend your low-end response, but it does absorb higher frequencies and dampens the sound somewhat so the soundwaves aren't reverberating the sub box so much. The low end becomes more focused and tightened, and won't ring out as much, which means your low end will sound better at higher volumes

    Soundwaves travel slower through polyfil than they do in the air (at least that's the theory). By stuffing an enclosure with it, the net volume is effectively larger, which decreases the resonant frequency and thus extends the low end. Now, theory aside, it does in fact work in practice! A few guys (Toids DIY, for example) have done experiments with this and interestingly you can get pretty substantial results

  • @mgmg116

    @@TrevoPhD Actually, that's a good point, I never considered that the soundwaves would be travelling slower through the polyfill, that would effectively extend low end response. There wouldn't be a single resonant frequency, but numerous, since the sub is reproducing waves of varying frequency that cover whatever band of the spectrum the speaker is modelled to create (I'm assuming a bandwidth of 20Hz-80Hz). The materials of the polyfill will alter the frequency response to a small degree, as would an EQ, to a degree. Regardless, acoustics are an endlessly fascinating and incredibly in-depth topic of discussion. I myself am no scientist nor am I an acoustician, but I am a mixing engineer so I have a very practical experience with acoustics.

    @@mgmg116 Yeaah same, I'm just a dude who plays with it for fun. I suppose by resonant frequency I meant whichever frequency before the low pass filter is naturally the loudest, which for Barry I believe was around 40 hz before setting an EQ to emphasize lower frequencies, to make it nice and deep 😎. Of course that changes depending on where you're sitting, whether or not the windows are rolled down, etc., so with that many variables I figured it wasn't worth going full audiophile and just dialed it in the best I could with the built in 10-band EQ and hpf/lpf on the amp (the JBLs had WAY too much treble with a flat EQ) Edit: also good call! I believe the sub is set to cut off right around 80hz 👌

    I really enjoyed this video, can't wait to see what is next! I couldn't see it in the video, but make sure to sand really well the holes in which your speaker wires pass through ! So that with time they don't cut through your wires and short circuit. Also, i've never put an entire new sound system myself, so did you connect the front and rear speakers directly to your amp, or to the radio? (I know the sub is connected to the amp though). And that pun in the end was hilarious, nice one Barry

    I don't like jbl headphones myself because the sound is alright but not very balanced. Don't know about car speakers but polk audio was good if i recall correctly. Great choice with the alpine head unit, best car radios i know and has really good adjustments and really clear signal. I had a pioneer 1din radio in my volvo, not that old as it had built in bt but the adjustments weren't as good and the signal was ok but not good. I got an 1din alpine cd/bt/usb/aux radio and the signal is way clearer, i can hear the highs on the stock speaker system and my kicx subs play way louder and cleaner. Pioneer started crackling with way lower volume than alpine, and didn't play bass at all on low volumes. I want to upgrade the speakers on my volvo, but the stock stereo is good with an upgraded package (2005 v70), so i don't need to get an amplifier for the speakers as it already has an 200w amp. My subs have an 3000w amp so don't want to add another for speakers right now.

    Those exposed cables for the sound system are exposed to all of that sharp metal! The rubber/plastic insulation will be worn down and cut through after a couple of years. You need grommets or a protective sleeve for each spot the cable touches!

  • @TrevoPhD

    @TrevoPhD

    2 жыл бұрын

    There's no footage but we went through the holes with a burr bit and softened all of the edges. It's not necessarily a grommet but the metal was made very round and smooth. With how thick the wire's rubber insulation is and how much slack they had there shouldn't be any problems 😉 Aside from the doors the rest of the wire isn't running to any moving parts so there's no worry there. Still, yes, ideally you use grommets... 🙃 Maybe we'll put some in

    1:10 Barry, you underestimate the usefulness of an automotive ashtray: They make the best coin holders ever.
