DIY Vanagon upgrades (sound deadening, wheels, shower, insulation)

We try to keep ourselves busy with upgrading our 34 year old van. In this episode we show how we worked through sound deadening the van while giving it a thin layer of insulation. Also, we figure out a clever and efficient solution for taking showers on the road, organizing tools and getting rid of the horrible hollow sounds of the T3 doors/hatch. Stay tuned for the full progress of insulating the van :)

I used the Noico sound deadening and insulation in my 25 year old Land Cruiser. It went from sounding like a tin can to an ice chest. I still do the knock test every so often. Totally worth it!

You guys do come a long way to finishing touch up. Looking great. Thank you for sharing the sound differences by tapping on the metal. You are the first people to show this, because most videos tell you that it deafens the noise. However, you showed it to hear the sound to understand the difference. I love the shower rod concept. You guys are so creative and are mind blowing me away with ideas. Getting very organized inside. Thumb up!

If you want to decrease the Sound of the door you don't need to tape the whole door. Its enough if you place there only one piece. So you can safe some material.

You are investing a great deal of effort in your van and all to great effect. Key thing is the shell seems to be well worth the investment, being nearly rust-free at 35 years old. Once the engine upgrade is sorted (which it will be !) this van will give you many happy holidays and memories.

Nice work guys. We done exactly the same on our T3 Syncro a few weeks ago. It makes such a difference. We also sound deadened the cab floor, up behind the dash and under the front seats. In the back the only area we haven't done yet is behind the cupboards. In the UK we have been in lockdown for about 6 weeks now so we've been able to get loads of jobs done on our van ready for when we can travel again.

Sweet! We wanna do the same exact thing, but we ran short of materials. Did you notice a big difference while driving? We haven’t got to test it properly yet. Same here, spending the «lazy days» building the van out. Hope to get proper insulation done soon as well as a diesel heater.

@@SimonBraeck Yeah we noticed a huge difference (only been to the shops and back a few times so far though), we used a product called silent coat as a base layer then sticky backed foam over the top of that where we could. I think the cab floor made the most difference. We also done under the seats as that's above the suspension. Its nice to be able to talk and listen to music while driving without all the road noise. You'll love having a diesel heater too, I fitted ours just before Christmas and it's amazing!! Not tried to cook anything with ours yet though :) Did you understand what I meant about connecting your solar panel to your leisure battery on the last video? If not I could draw it and email it to you.

Wow, I look forward to being able to enjoy some music without all the road noise. Can’t wait to start! Seems like you are a few steps ahead of our progress, I’ll simply follow your advice, lovely. We really want to fit ours underneath the van, but we need some proper expertise to help us out. I’m having issues with getting notified of the comments, so I actually missed it. But I went back there and read it, and to be fair it sounds really simple. We might add a secondary solar panel dedicated for the leisure battery, but I also like the idea and the dual purpose of being able to toggle between charging the Yeti and the leisure battery from one panel... Thanks for your insights 😊😊

Hey Simon, fellow VWT25 1.6 TD owner here. These are some pretty innovative upgrades! Like you we have a problem with excessive cabin noise so I'm curious to hear how your sound deadening has worked out as we may follow suit. Is it worth it are there other areas worth doing for a quick win? Will I ever be able to hear what my partner is saying when we travel over 50mph? Diesel heater - we bought a cheap Chinese one from Ebay which we fitted with 5L tank under the bed and it works great much better than the propex heater we had In our year of ownership, the issues we have had have been fairly minor: reverse light switch, various coolant leaks, exhaust manifold needed welding and now a sticky injector pump

Hey! I know what you’re talking about. It will make a difference and I think the effort is worth it, the install isn’t that hard. However it’s not gonna revolutionize the noise levels... We had a air vent stuck on full power until recently, and that made a bigger difference tbh. Also, I’ve heard that changing the wind shield seal it good too. I’ll try that in a few days.
