I wonder how easily this could be ported into a game engine, like Unity3D. that way it would take a min or two to process the image, and generate the city. and then you just have a simple 3d world that you can explore like a video game. sounds like a fun project to try :D

Yes its bad, but for something like OP suggested, it would be the best option still.

I have to say, it feels like a bit of a waste that it doesn't use the GPU for rendering. I can just picture this running with a few hundred FPS if written in C++/DX11 or Java/LWJGL. In LWJGL 2 especially, since the code changes would be just minimal, maybe 2 hours of work to convert it and get a performance gain of anything between 10x and 1000x depending on the GPU... And possibly even higher performance gains if it's changed to work with vertex buffers.

You don't need DX11, OpenGL works fine. But he wasn't writing the OpenGL code, that was being generated for him. It's pretty sad because he insinuated that the program was drawing everything behind the camera since viewing the whole city from above took the same amount of time to render 1 frame.

Considering that he wrote it 3 years ago I think he should rewrite the code biased on what he already has as well. That way he could fix issues and optimize the program.

When I try to run program, I get error: "No library found for saito.objloader Libraries must be installed in a folder named 'libraries' inside the sketchbook folder" Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Since ive got nothing else to do starting thursday, And ive been willing to try out my lil OpenGL framework anyway, I can try recoding this in C++, if anyone here is interested. I might be, but ill probably add my own touches (like an interactive designer). Of course i will post the code on a public git repo when its finished. Based on previous experience, i should easily be able to run this demo at watchable framerates. If i can, just tell me and ill be giving it a try :) (Im currently studying Computer science, but have been coding for much longer, esp in C++ - in case youre wondering if i have any credibility.)

i know nothing about any of this and the video just showed up on my home screen but after watching it i thought everything was really interesting :) cool video

I don't think the current version has that feature. However, in Processing there is a .OBJ Export library that could theoretically be implemented to allow you to do that. Would take a bit of coding, and a lot of the assets are missing from the source at the moment

That’s a really cool program! I think it would be neat if you could run different cities through a neural network to generate your map.

It worked by installing jogamp library, putting to specific folder inside yoyleCityWords (as instructed in Processing), and changing com.sun.* to com.jogamp.*

There used to be a mod for Minecraft called adventurecraft that used a similar bitmap-based system for controlling the world generation. It helps to manually edit the RGB stuff as separate layers and mix them after the fact.

For optimization, the #1 thing you could implement is frustum culling, where you do some math for what is or isn't in frame, which would cut down on wasted rendering.

4:08 Looks to me like you're using OpenGL (since you're importing processing.opengl.*), which means you are using the GPU, not just the CPU!

in city planning residential zones are usually marked as green, commercial as blue and industrial as orange/brown. Actually it's that way in SimCity and Cities Skylines, but I'm sure that had its reasons.

What are your computer's specs?
