Turning An Inlay Tray Or Platter - Better Yet!

After returning from the Rocky Mountain Woodturning Symposiummm, I turned a inlaid platter or tray, using the lathe for drilling. This was a test. At the symposium, the presenter had used a vacuum chuck to hold the project while drilling on the lathe. But, at that time, I had a thought "why use the lathe - can't the drill press do as well with less hassle?". In addition, I wanted to have the inlay show as part of a curve in the profile.
This design is inspired by a compass pattern. The background is walnut. Inlay pieces are maple, bloodwood, and sycamore. The back is maple veneer and walnut. The 9" platter is finished with wipe-on poly.
A drill press was used for all drilling operations instead of the lathe.
Here's the previous video using the lathe for drilling.

What do you think about the differences in the process? How would you do this inlay?
Enjoy.

I was napping and when I woke up I saw spots before my eyes. 🤩 But they went away when you started shaping the platter. Yes, the drill press with forstner bits. Maybe hole saws for the spots. Looks good to me. Thank you for sharing Alan. Have a great day. We'll both keep ouf face shields on. Hope everyone else does too.🙂🙂

Alan, I've been a subscriber for some time and enjoy watching your video's that demonstrate your creativity. I have turned a number of inlaid bowls with varying patterns. I use a CNC to cut pockets on the bottom of bowl and to make the inserts. The inserts fit tightly with no gaps so I use wood glue. Some of the members of my woodturning club say that is cheating, but the results are nice. After the glue dries I flatten the bottom with the CNC then using hot melt glue fasten a sacrificial block to the bottom and turn the inside of the bowl, until the inlays are exposed. The pockets and inlays are about 1/2" deep.

Excellent work! The only thing I might change is to drill the center hole in the walnut inlay using the lathe. Quicker and easier than redrawing the lines.

Another nice video. Thanks. The OneWay Drill wizard or a similar homemade device and the lathe index feature provides endless variety of drilling options. I've used it often. Because it is easy to drill a hole at an angle other than 90 degrees to the board surface, the resulting turning is an oval, ellipse, etc. These interspersed with circles makes for an interesting appearance. And yes, I wear my face shield and respirator! Keep reminding people.
