    Your video inspired me, a total rookie, to make over a dozen of these rings so far using the same tools you did. A few key takeaways for those following the video's instructions: 1) Keep your blade sharp!! If your blade is even the slightest bit dull, you are likely to shatter the ring core as you shave down the surface area or final width. (Ask me how I know - ha ha :) In my experience, you need to sharpen your tools at least once during the process of making one ring. And if you have one of the carbide tip "easy tools" like I do, rotate the tip after only a couple rings. They don't stay sharp very long. **Best advice: Get a small bench grinder for about $65 at Home Depot or Lowes. You're gonna need it. 2) For final finishing, I suggest a few layers of the green bottle epoxy instead of the pink bottle of stain that Mike uses. If you use that pink bottle, the ring will soon break down and fall apart after getting it wet a few times. Add a layer of epoxy, spray it with accelerator, sand lightly with 400 grit, and repeat 3-4 times. It'll look just as nice and be much more rugged. 4) One of the wood blanks Craft Supplies USA sells is called Ironwood. It's tough to cut and will dull your blades even faster. If you order wooden blanks, call their office and ask the customer service rep for softer wood cores, at least to start. 5) If you order the acrylic blanks to make a ring (not shown in this video but available from Craft Supplies USA), be prepared for a really bad smelling process. Those acrylic cores make a stringy mess and smell terrible as you turn them. 6) When you're hollowing out the core to size, press gently. With a little practice you'll feel the cutting tool reach the double-sided tape. 7) You may find your ring core hole gets narrower as you bore toward the waste block. That's OK! Instead of boring the whole core at once, switch back and forth between boring the center hole and scraping back the front surface of the wooden block. All in all this is a really fun project that anyone can do. I had ZERO experience and am finding it to get easier with every ring. You can do this!

    I've made a couple , but I find it rather difficult to use the skew and open the hole up to accept the ring. It's very difficult to cut straight in. You should offer drill bits that are exact size of the OD of the ring for a good fit.

    It is. You should take a beginners class first. Then get a small lathe, and get carbide tools unless you have taken a sharpening class. When shopping for a lathe keep in mind tools are $60-$80 each, and you'll need at least a round and square tip one.

I have no clue what I'm doing wrong? And how would friction polish work with a ring? Would it not hold up as well as ca glue? Thank you

  • @CraftSuppliesUSA

    @CraftSuppliesUSA

    5 жыл бұрын

    Sounds like you're holding the activator too close while spraying. Hold the can about 12 to 18 inches away from the piece or it drys too fast and clouds. Friction polish will work, but it is not as durable as the CA finish in the long run.

    Micro Mesh works great on acrylic rings. You can also use Micro Magic or Micro Surface Pads. Here's a link to each... Try giving ours a try. It's cloth based and very sticky compared to others on the market. Here's a link. www.woodturnerscatalog.com/p/85/5833/Permacel-Double-Sided-Tape

    good video, but not as easy as he makes it look. even for a seasoned turner. very important to have a very small scraper for the core sizing. you don't want to cut into your waste block otherwise your core will sit too low when you insert it and you'll discover your blank will end up too narrow for the core once you remove it. also very important that when using your scraper your, blade remain parallel to the spindle otherwise your core will end up too big on one side. it's slow going sneaking up on the coring so if anyone has any tricks on how to keep the scraper parallel (other than eye-balling) please advise. until then, patience is your best ally.

    I have a scrap piece of padauk. What are the dimensions that I need for this? Also, is there a difference between using a forstner bit or a skew to make the hole? Thanks.

    The blank will need to be about 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" x 1/2". We recommend using a skew to get the hole perfectly sized. A forstner bit will work just fine, but it's hard to find the perfect size bit for the rings hole. You can always use an undersized forstner bit, then finish it off with the skew.

    Thanks! I have a 3" x by 3" piece, I'm assuming turning that won't be too different from turning a 1-1/2" square. Would just take some more time. Thanks!

    What type of double back tape do you recommend? I've tried two types now and they both just melt to the wood.
