Hi there, I have made many Ulu knife cutting blocks. You explained things well, but I also add a slot in one of the sides to stand the cutting board up with the knife inserted in it. It stays on the counter for use and decorative purposes. I do this by measuring the depth of the blade from the handle to the edge of the blade, I then figure out how many turns on my table saw it takes to raise the blade for the correct depth. I then clamp the cutting block onto the fence so the cut will be in the center of one of the sides. I also use rubber feet on the bottom to keep it stable on the countertop. This seems to be a very popular design for me. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Gord! Beautiful chopping bowl! Gayle must be delighted with her bowls! I really like the combination of woods both in the old and in the new. You matched the grains really well, in the final pictures the grain in the cherry seems to flow in the one in the walnut! Great project! Cheers! Daniel

Excellent turning, and gluing!! I fully support the glue on both sides approach, my reasoning is that if there are some slight lower points in the wood (even if there shouldn't be after sanding), putting glue on each side will fill them up nicely and make sure it will be a tight glue up. I had me one of those Ulu knife, always thought about making a bowl for it... Now that I have the skill to do so, I have no idea where the knife is, when the kids became big enough to take stuff by themselves from the drawers in the kitchen we put it somewhere... Great video Gord. I bought an Ulu knife a couple weeks ago and have been wanting to make the bowl for it. I really like the idea of using the Cole jaws. I will be trying this project this winter. Thanks

great job Gord I have the knife had it for years don't remember where I picked it up however I do use it often and it has good steel keeps an edge well never had a block to use it with just always used a block made way back when it does onions chopped real fine as well as beacon and bell peppers for egg omelet yum

Thanks for the video Gord. I was planning on making similar bowl for the Ulu knife my sister found at a yard sale. I planned on gluing a block to the back of the bowl to attach to a face plate but your use of Cole jaws made me think that I should give it a shot with my Longworth chuck. I'm hoping slow speeds and use of the tail stock will make this workable. Looks like an Ulu knife would make a great skinning knife as well.

Hi Gord! As an ex chef,I found that really interesting. I'm always on the lookout for things I can use in the kitchen! I've seen that knife used in the TV programme "Life Below Zero",and always wondered what it was called.Now I just have to see if I can locate one in the U.K.!!Nice job my friend,Take care, Keith.

I think my wife would love a knife like this... it would be so much easier on her hands. One quick question for you Gord; Do you think you could use the knife as a scraper in order to get that last little bit of contour perfect? Great video as always!

Well I did it again. Ran my arm over the point on my live center in tail stock. You would think I would learn to remove it or put the rubber boot on it that I made. Pretty hard to deal with stupidity. Large band aid.

+Scott Gaber OUCH!! I prefer not to think of that as stupidity. If it's stupid that would make me, and many other turners, total idiots!! I couldn't count the number of times that I've done the same thing. By now I should have a scab on my elbow thick enough that you couldn't cut it with a knife but I still manage to make it bleed once in awhile! Maybe we should start a club. Only those with scarred elbows could join! Hope you heal quickly, Scott.

Now you will have to go back to Alaska for another knife
