I agree. As a prospector it is frustrating seeing how much gold some people pull. And then they will even be bored or disappointed with finding more gold in a day than most prospectors could find in a season.

Hello Chris, as I described in "losing money " classifying on the spot as much as possible washes the gravel breaks up the clay and you get rid of great percentage of material you do not have to handle any more. Plus, resulting fines require much smaller sluice box and smaller flow of water.Use a classifier in a bucket, regards George .

One of the best waterproofing sealants I've run across for wood and I did this to my own first high banker. I built exterior wood glue. It's water-based. It goes on easy. It doesn't stink and it's rock strong. I put on an old beach towel underneath some woodwork. I was doing many many moons ago and drip some on there. It hardened and my son was a toddler at the time. He's a teenager now the glue is still on there. I said well this is going to be a great sealant for my wooden sluice. That was 4 years ago now and it's still watertight and didn't warp.

A famous New Zealand author, Barry Crump, wrote one story where his protagonist took a normal rotary cement mixer, a pump, and a generator and a shovel, set the cement mixer running, and just shoveled the paydirt into it with water running strongly into the drum. All the gold went to the bottom of the drum, and as he shoveled the dirt in, the excess worked its way out of the lip of the drum.

The ribbed carpet is very forgiving as it self classifies - filtering the gold out in the textured loops, ribs and the drops, (and giving it a place to hide) while letting the oversized material easily pass down with moderate water flow. It's also lighter, softer and much easier to work with than rubber matting. If you steepen the angle (e.g. 11-13 degrees) and slow down the water a bit the carpet also performs well. For a lightweight setup - I use a series of 4 plastic boot trays (14 inch x 28 inch aka 35cm x 71cm) with only unbacked ribbed carpet (no expanded metal) here in Canada for my highbanker sluice (can be used on the ground, or with a stand). The boot tray has raised texture in the bottom that catches any gold that filters through the carpet, preventing migration down the sluice. In my experience, this setup works very well with hand bailed water, a 1 inch gas pump, or a 2,000 GPH 12V bilge pump for flour gold capture. I was amazed at the amount of -100 and -200 mesh gold I caught with this setup during my last trip (1 inch Honda gas pump, moderate flow and angle with fast feed rate, 3/8 inch classification).

4 foot by 8 foot half inch PVC board (often used for paneling walls in food prep areas) would make a light durable version of this without worry of delamination like what you used. It is solid plastic through and through. Often find cutting boards made of this material. Find a large cutting board and it might be the right size.

What about an electric pump with a good screen on the intake - instead of the "bucket carry" delivery system? I read somewhere that some dude did research that showed that water with up to 20% solids (really muddy water) will flush gold out effectively. So you hose down your "Frankenbanker" - and save back and time. Seen vids of the Asian guys using the output of a small stream coming off a jungle cliff or small pump to water their systems. A bilge pump with a smallish lithium ion batt - light weight and portable - as your "recirculating sluice" water source should do it.

i bought some second hand buckets today, and was eager to let you know, seeing as how your handle broke, but i see you've bought new bunnings buckets. but if you're interested, they've got quite a few back in stock. 10 and 20 litre. you'll just have to head north of the border and use your nose to find the smell [i'm sure that is more than enough of a hint lol]. they're asking $1 per bucket, but an extra $1 per lid. if you get out there early, you might be lucky and get the last roll of old artificial grass, if you're interested. they've got a fair bit of pvc piping too, kind of cheap, if you wanted some to make extra suction pumps.

@@VoGusProspecting they had very few left the previous time i was out there [albury tip shop - i'm sure you worked that out], but they've got heaps at the moment. metal handles too, so not going to break. extra $1 per lid isn't so great though. they've got plastic pallets there too. not sure how much they want for them. but i was thinking they'd make a good base for a mega sluice. just cover with thin aluminium or galvanised steel. i know it's potentially a little heavier, maybe two people required, but would handle getting wet, and potentially relatively cheap compared to thicker aluminium or galvanised steel required for structural strength. i think you could cut them, removing some of the height of the pallet, while still maintaining a lot of the structural strength. if you did cut them up a bit, the cut bits might be useful as sides of the sluice and/or riffles.

My braincell just wiggled, what about a small wooden strip down the centre so you have two narrower mats to pull?

They also sell plastic board that you could have used for the sides and the base and you would have never had to worry about buying the paint and it would have turned out about the same value of money spent😊
