turn motorcycle turn signal into running lights

This is how I turned my XVS 1100 turn signal lights into running lights. Two 5A diodes & 1/2 watt 560 ohm resistor. I got the resistors from radio shack & the diodes from eBay.

MY MAN!!! I custom wired 6 LED turn signal lights onto my bike, and for the life of me could not get the "yellow wire" running light feature to work. I happened to have some zener diodes, and 100ohm resistors laying around from a breadboarding kit i have, and I threw everything together per your instructions and it works BEAUTIFULLY. I put some switches on the wire connected to the trailing end of the last diode on each side, and now I can turn my running lights on and off at will, and have super bright turn signals!! Thanks for posting this and for the drawings!!

Great video and thanks for the advice. Used it to set up my own running light/turn signal and it looks/works great. Unfortunately, the resistor you used for yours was too strong for my setup. In the end, i was able to get LED lights to work only if i used a resistor under 100 ohms. 70 ohms actually turned out to be the correct number for my setup. Also, the diodes you used were pretty big. I was surprised at their size when they arrived in the mail. I am pretty confident someone could use a much smaller size if they want to keep their wiring more compact.

Thanks for the video and wiring diagrams.... Does the resistor generate a significant amount of heat on a long run? I like this method but I am concerned a 1/2 watt resistor may overheat and break down, or worse yet melt your insulation and leave you with a short. No Radio shack here and I will have to order the resistors and diodes, want to be sure I am ordering the correct ones. Thanks again.

Johnny Gooch I've done mine for over a year now & have no problems. I've been all over Florida. FYI lol I ordered mine is just use RadioShack as a reference. the 1/2 is just to cut the voltage a little so when you turn on the indicator it is brighter than the actual running lights

Thanks, I built one after the post and put it on a test bench with the run light on for 12 hours and no heat build up. I have a 500 ohm resister in place but it is a 6.5 watt which is larger physically than I would like just because of the bulk, but that is what I got when I ordered online, the item did not match the photo but it works fine. Not sure of the specs on the rectifier. Radio Shack has gone out of business here so I am at the mercy of the internet. Interesting project. We are building a 750 Honda Spirit bobber and the lollipop turn signal looked awful.

Do I need the resistor to make this work? At the moment I'm trying to make my LED signal lights work as running lights as well. I'm using this method without the resistor but no luck. I've watched this other video that didn't use the resistor to make this work.

  • @calico344

Yes both serve a purpose, the diode is if you want the light to be a little dull so the flashing is visible, the resistor stops the current from flowing the other way so it won't loop thru the circuit. Pay close attention to direction that the resistor is facing.

Sorry for the late response, my front lights were also already set like that from the factory. If you want to do the front lights the same rule applies when doing it. you will have to use the low beam off the headlights to give it power and the same setup after that just as the rear lights.

Thanks for responding. I did it without the resistor and it worked as it did without anything. two wires going to sidemarker. a ground and a intermetent power. when putting the diode on each, I placed a simple voltage checker before the diode and it blinked. after the diode there was nothing. I tapped into a 12v lead to a halogen parking light to a led sidemarker. and the taillight is led as well
