I just hung mine in what I dubbed the pit barrel as the “Yum Drum” with the pit barrel turkey hanger, using 4 chunks of pecan & cowboy brand lump charcoal. As the BBQ pit boys say it smells Guuud 👍🏻👍🏻

This has been a game changer for Thanksgiving. It comes out great, and it frees up the oven for other food. And get the turkey hanger, well worth it.

I'm way late on this review. I ordered my Pit Barrel Cooker and had it the weekend before Thanksgiving. So I immediately I do some ribs based on watching all of the how to's with this smoker..Baby Back, St. Louis and some beef and invite my new neighbors over. Long story short, I am a god! Now fast forward to Thanksgiving day. Invite my neighbors over who are new to Phoenix and waiting for their stuff to arrive from Lockport. Smoked a turkey and added some smoke to things like the greens, sweet potato casserole etc.. My neighbors think I've been doing this forever. This thing is phenomenal just follow the instructions and the videos from numerous sources.

The best turkey ever. 8 1/2 lb bone in turkey breast, cooked for approx. 3 1/2-4 hours. Used the turkey hanger, with a few hooks to make it more secure. Added some bacon strips as well.

I went ahead and got several turkey hangers they have now, they work great!. I love my PBC! Chickens, Turkey, ribs, pork butts, come out amazing. I still need to perfect my brisket to the PBC as it cooks so much quicker than my old rig did, just can't seem to narrow down the difference. Temperatures are the same at doneness, just as juicy and moist, but just not as tender. Going to wrap a full hour sooner next time. I will get there!

Fantastic! Years ago, my friend had a homemade barrel smoker. He had a stainless steel strainer with a length of threaded stainless rod through the center. He ran that through the turkey, butt side down sitting in the strainer. Worked great!

Last year I cooked a 17 pound turkey in my PBC and it was one of the best turkeys I've ever prepared. It was juicy, and cooked well throughout the whole turkey. I cooked another using an injector and it was also very good, but I think that using dry rubs are just as good, if not better. This year we are going to brine the turkey with a paprika mix and then use a dry rub. Love the PBC!

If I emplaced the grill grate underneath the turkey (as a catch pan, just in case the meat falls from the hooks), would the grill grate interfere with the cooking process at all?

I've done a whole turkey breast (no thighs or legs) a few times and have found that cutting those in half is much easier to handle and produces a delicious bird that you can marinade/season two different ways. I hang them just like a chicken. I'm going to smoke a whole bird for the first time for Christmas. Any suggestions on how to orient a whole bird cut in half? Would you suggest using two hooks, one through the breast and one through the thigh and hanging it breast down as with a whole bird?

Got my cooker on Saturday, three day delivery and fired it up yesterday to cook my Christmas turkey. Turkey turned out great. Did a 20 pound bird in about 4.5 hours. Put the cooker away 10 hours after the initial start and still had embers burning... wow. Looking further to further cooks. Question. Any hints on how to get the skin crisper. Have always had that issue, no matter what I smoked my bird in.

I have a pitt barrel(love it of course), and I'm curious why you don't cut the turkey in half like you recommend with chickens. I also saw your new turkey holder attachments. I usually try to cook small turkeys, about 12-14 lbs. Do you think cooking them like a chicken, cut in half, would work for that size bird?

Crack the lid/offset the lid for approx. 15-30 minutes. That brings up the heat, which will crisp the skin up. The same with chicken. It takes some practice getting it just right.
