Turbo Mini hood vents and weight reduction
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Cutting weight out of the R56 Cooper S is always something I’m interested in. I also wanted a way to reduce engine bay heat. Less heat equals more power and avoiding heat soak means I keep more power for longer. I cut as much out of the hood as possible while still keeping some rigidity. The @RYOBITOOLSUSA angle grinder was as reliable as ever. All of my @harborfreight tools made the the job so much easier. The drill and drill bits from @dewalttv were amazing. Thanks to @maverikadventure for my weird intro and the slushie helped keep me cool on these 100+ days.

I used the exact same vents in my Clubman. Since I work in a collision shop I had it a little easier since I have the tools and cutters to do that. ;) I had the same problem with the tape on the vents, and even after adding new tape on them, I didn't trust the way they fit, so I put some small screws in all 4 corners. Came out nice, and the screws aren't even noticeable. Also, before I installed the vents, I glued in some window screen on the bottom side of them, as a little deterrent against bugs and unwanted stuff in the engine compartment. I had added the screen to the backside of the factory scoop a while back as I got the hood used but never had the factory insert for the scoop. Turned out I liked it better with the screen, at least it has some air going in there. So, I used it on the new vents too. ;)

Awesome. The tape I used is holding great. I tried to pull them back off and they wouldn’t move. I’ll see how it lasts long term.
I feel like the hood will flex at high speeds due to the air pressure. All that metal is there to keep the hood strong enough to handle weight and pressure

There’s a little more flex, but not enough that I care. I can still close it like normal, so it’s not even enough flex to hinder that.

@@recklesslyfestyle that’s cool. Do the vent actually help cool the engine bay down?

They do. Before I did them, at autocross it heat soaked so bad on a 100 degree day, it wouldn’t do a boosted launch on the last couple runs. After I did them on a 100 degree day it launched in boost all day without issue.

@@recklesslyfestyle that’s pretty sick. I might do a mod like this when I get my mini back!
What happens when driving in heavy Rain? You will get buckets of water in there on your engine...what are the effects on that in the future?

It’s been great. The factory vent on the hood has always let water in.
Love the videos about minis but man, as a former aircraft structural repairer, its foolish to say cutting away that much material, specifically designed to add to the structural integrity, wouldnt affect the structural integrity of the hood. Cools better? for sure without a doubt. same in a crash? no man. Best of luck to ya, Subbed!

I know there’s less structural integrity. I’m sure it’ll be even worse in a crash if I swap to a carbon fiber hood. Which I’ll probably do. So, I will keep fingers crossed that I don’t get in an accident.

Dude as if the bonnet is a structural part haha

@@crc0889 the point wasnt the structural integrity of the vehicle, its rather the SI of the "bonnet" my dude. That hood would act a LOT differently than a stock one. Best of luck.
did you happen to notice a changge in engine temps as well as intake air temps after all this?

Before the vents, still with stock intercooler, on a 100 degree day. It would heat soak so bad at autocross that it wouldn’t come up on boost on the launch for the last few runs. After the vents, still on stock intercooler, on a 100 degree day. I could launch in boost all day. Didn’t actually check engine temps or iat’s before and after, but functionally I’m happy.
Cool! (See what I did there?) I put hood vents from a Jaguar XKE Supercharged into the hood of my 2005 R50. It's even more important to keep the NA engines cool (especially when every horsepower counts!), and I live in Arizona, where it's ridiculously hot in the summer. I was surprised how much the steel sections I removed weighed. Also installed a 180 CFM ChillOut Systems Club Series blower motor to force fresh, cool air into the CAI box. kzread.info/dash/bejne/not1s7dvhtqwiag.html

Awesome, I think all Mini’s run hot. Arizona definitely isn’t helping you there.
