🐒 TURBO HOT HATCH FOR UNDER 5K! BOOSTED CITROEN SAXO VTR REVIEW
The Citroën Saxo was a supermini produced by the French manufacturer Citroën from 1996 to 2004. It was sold in Japan as the Citroën Chanson, because Honda had registered the "Saxo" name.[1] As a badge engineered variant of the Peugeot 106 (which itself was a development of the Citroën AX), the major difference being interiors and body panels. Production ended in 2004, when it was replaced with the Citroën C2 and Citroën C3.
All engines were from the PSA TU engine series that powered the Peugeot 205 from 1988 and the Citroën AX, and had their roots before that with the OHC PSA X engine various other PSA cars used, such as the Citroën Visa, Peugeot 104 and early Peugeot 205. The range included five petrol engines and one diesel engine, all naturally aspirated.
Although the quoted power outputs are low in comparison to modern small hatchbacks, or even to other hatchbacks of the time, the kerb weight was generally very low, with even the range-topping VTS having a kerb weight of just 935 kg (2,061 lb), with other smaller engine models (except the diesel) being around 100 kg lighter than this
There were three sport models of the Saxo:
The Westcoast, later replaced by the Furio which featured a 1.4I 8V 55 kW (75PS/75BHP) engine with a top speed of 175 km/h (109 mph), and a 0-62.5 mph (0-100 km/h) time of 11.2 seconds.
The VTR MK1 (1997-1999) featured a 1.6I 8V 66 kW (90PS/89BHP) engine with a top speed of 187 km/h (116 mph) and a 0-62.5 mph (0-100 km/h) time of 10.0 seconds. The VTR MK2 (1999-2003) featured a 1.6I 8V 72 kW (98PS/97BHP) engine with a top speed of 193 km/h (120 mph) and a 0-62.5 mph (0-100 km/h) time of 9.4 seconds.
The VTS 16V featured a 1.6I 88 kW (120PS/118BHP) engine with a top speed of 205 km/h (127 mph), and a 0 to 60 mph time of 7.8 seconds. The VTS MK1 (1997-1999) and MK2 (1999-2003) shared similar performance, although the MK2 was slightly slower due to it being marginally heavier.
These models included 247 mm (9.7 in) vented front brake discs, with the VTR and VTS also having rear brake discs (solid 247 mm (9.7 in) discs). Also, a different style of control arms and struts was used for the suspension. The VTS had a 22 mm (0.9 in) master brake cylinder, and the VTR and Westcoast/Furio had a 19 mm (0.7 in).
The VTS had a 19 mm (0.7 in) front anti roll bar and 22 mm (0.9 in) rear anti roll bar, while the VTR and Westcoast/Furio had a 19 mm (0.7 in) front and 21 mm (0.8 in) or sometimes 19 mm (0.7 in) rear antiroll bar. In addition, all the sports models featured a unique bodykit to the other models, commonly known as the "VT" bodykit.
1998 Citroën Saxo VTS
Citroën carried on using the 1.4i engine on the facelift Saxo Automatic in 1999. Due to the C3 having a 1.4i automatic gearbox, the Saxo Automatic came to an end in March 2002, whilst the manual models were still sold right up to the end of 2003.
Although MK2 Saxos were generally better equipped than their older counterparts, the interiors were still dated in comparison to other small hatchbacks of the time, such as the Vauxhall Corsa, with many of the center console controls originating from the older model of the Citroën AX.
The 1.6L VTR and VTS Saxos were the best equipped, with both gaining rear disc brakes as opposed to drum brakes, and ABS as standard for the VTS and an optional extra on all other 1.6-liter models.
By 2003, some buyers were more attracted to the spacious, and practical five-door C3. However, the 1.6 VTR and VTS models remained popular. The Saxo finally finished production in September 2003, when the three-door C2 was launched. Its twin, the Peugeot 106, also ceased production at this time. By the end of the Saxo's production life, its design was seven years old.

Yes my lovelies what are you all saying! Fine baguette goodness for you here, very competent all rounder for not much skrilla! Turbo powers, 5 star chassis with lift off oversteer, sorted brakes, and a naughty LSD putting all the onions to the ground, pukka! And all for less than the price of a creme brulee, result! I've had three saxo's, quicksilver 1.4i, vtr and the vts. The difference from the vtr to vts was surprising, only 20 bhp more but it felt alot faster. Best times I've ever had in a car was in the saxo's, great little cars.

Used to have a vtr in the same colour 👌 only had an induction kit 3” hoffman straight pipe n a 4-1 manifold on her but was definitely one of the most fun cars I’ve owned proper little back road weapon n was really cheap on fuel , loved the video man 👍

I had a 106 MK1 XSi 8v, same engine as the VTR. Loved it, full Group N rally chassis mods, Supersprint straight-through and Piper rear box. Natural pops and the odd flame used to make me so happy as a lad 😂. I don’t live too far from you I don’t think…twice someone stole my back box in Horley…maybe it’s on this car lol. It sadly start giving a lot of problems…driveshafts were a consumable and the weird keypad immobiliser was possessed. Some girl bought it and took it to Cornwall, where I believe it died finally 😞
Very nice, I've fond memories of the Saxo as i had one of the 1st VTR's in the UK back in Jan 97 in Poseidon Blue, i felt the dogs after having an AX GT previously.
Love these sorts of builds ,fast and affordable.

I had a slammed 106 gti in China blue. Fecking loved it! My mate got a white phase 2 rallye with a fully polished/forged gti turbo lump, all we needed to do was sort the shell and he'd have a rapid car... it may appear one rainy day...

I had a black vtr (FP02 MGY) with a viper induction kit, map and cat back! Was around 120BHP. Awsum car only sold her for an upgrade to a clio 182. I can't imagine 230bhp tho, crazy man! Cool video 👍
used to buy VTR's cheap as chips, 2-400£ 10 years ago and flip them for about 6-800, I was passenger in one going down hill (mate driving) and I remember that day because that's when i realised they're nippy for what they are

Looks superb the saxo is a great looking car works well with the turbo setup and handles really nicely well set up car and suspension .
Loved my vts. It was lowered, mapped, exhaust and strut brace. Little go kart.

My vtr was my all time favourite car, only had it lowered and bike throttle body but man was that thing nimble. You could through it round corners like it was on rails so much fun I've never had a car handle as well since tbf everything is just so heavy these days.

had an 03 VTS in red at 19, paid more on insurance than what the car was worth 😂 felt like i was king of the road in a 16v
My mate leant me his VTS when my nova GTE gear box went. And it was standard apart from pipercross air in duct-ion kit. And he put Peugeot 205 1.9gti wheels on. If you hit a corner hard under steer would start, let off the back end would step out. Then just control the drift. Definitely even standard they handle very well. Good bike this. Takes me back to days of Revs, max power, fast car.

Had. 1.1 for my first car 1.4 quick silver for my second, a GTi 106 later on down the line but never a saxo still want one these days
Love this little rocket 🚀 I race Saxo’s in the hot 1600s and I love throwing it around it keeps me in my youth 😂

Damn. I ran yellow stuff on a 1.0l Saxo and it didn’t stop fast enough for me. I hope he’s managed to set it up better than I did!!

huh, that's weird. Maybe you had air in the lines? With crappy tires my saxo will literally lock up on all 4 at the same time if I stomp the brakes hard enough
I used to own a silver vtr about 7-8 years ago, i paid £650 for it with only 64k on the clock 👌 then swapped it for a mk3 golf gti and what a mistake that was, i should have kept the little baguette machine.
Wow brings back memories these can be rapid 😉

As a kid, I saw VTRs/VTS' and 106s everywhere, but I don't even see them around my area anymore. Always wanted a 106 Quicksilver when I was younger 🤣Might need to scratch that itch.

Brought a quiksilver few years back then got a donnor saxo for vts engine, lowered 50mm all round 306 wheels 306gti6 brakes disk rear beam straight through exhaust, race manifold, total cost £1000 quid next stage is to fit a turbo etc! Should get one!

I had a 320hp turbo engine in my 106 rallye, way too much power , undrivable. A baby one like this is much better !
Lad i was working with when he was apprentice was gonna turbo his saxo and decided to take rear axle off and car flipped of the ramp

This man better has some video documentation, i have a Citroën BX with the same engine swapped in. Good god i want, no need this in my BX. 220 hp is mayby a bit much, but if i aim for 175ish then it should be quite dailble
Nice bit of fun that looks. Shame Citroën and Peugeots have always had bad electric gremlins for me.

@@monkylondon definitely fun pocket rockets . So it was hot summers day about 4 years ago after long day at work went pub for a meal . Football was on 1 pint turns into a few .then decided I was going home and thought it be a good idea to drift a square roundabout (never a good idea ) I got it to drift haha was so snappy couldn't catch it that many times 😅ended up binning it into center barriers so left the car went home . Then knock knock knock hello Mr police man 👮♂️

@@monkylondon just the boggo 1.6 tritech W11 with a 15% pulley man. Still gives me a nawwwty whine but nothing like this monster. In a ideal world I'd compound charge mine and run both supercharger and turbo because why not 🤣
