    WOW!! This surely brings back some childhood memories I have of aircraft like this taking off from my old hometown airport in Tyler, TX - Pounds Regional. I also recall the noise from Garrett turbine engines like these being far more intense than the Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-27s flying the Twin Otter 300.

    Very similar to the sound of the ATR 42-300/320 ATR 72-200/201/202/210/212, Dash 8-100/200/300, Xian MA60

    Turbo props are always in the feathered position so as not to able to turn of there is a strong wind blowing. Just remember there are no pistons, so the compression in a piston engine is not affected by weather. The turbines when spinning if not feathered can cause serous bearing damage as there is no oil circulating to lubricate the turbine bearings etc.

    That’s not the case for these single shaft Garrett/Honeywell turbines. On shut down you put them onto the start locks by bringing the throttles all the way back. On the ramp, they will be in flat pitch, not feathered. Because you’re turning everything (compressor, turbine, prop) when you start, the prop needs to be in flat pitch for the batteries to be able to turn the shaft fast with enough power to start. If they’re feathered, there will be too much drag for a start. It’s an engine start check list item: “Propeller clear and on start locks.”

    goog le Yes, BUT our GOVT, said they HAD to sell it off, as they (ROCKWELL ) already had the SABRELINER , as they were worried that they were ‘cornering’ the jut business.

    Man, those props started turning really fast on start-up. Are they direct drive?

  • @evanidso9132

    @evanidso9132

    ROCKSTARCRANE Yes they are. Direct drive with a gear reduction system. The turbine is spinning in excess of 23,000 RPM while the prop is spinning at around 2100 RPM.

  • @edwardnorton5693

    @edwardnorton5693

    Yes the Garret engines are direct drive. However the free turbine engines can accelerate faster (quicker throttle response) and the free turbine do not need the larger starter motor or electrical power to get going because they are not trying to accelerate the entire engine with prop connected. When parked on the ramp, a free turbine prop blade will be feathered, facing forward, and a direct drive will be flat, facing the direction of prop spin.. (to make starting easier)

    There is something I would like to understand, why do the propellers appear to be slowing down and even appear to be changing their rotational direction even though there is no discernible change in the engine's idle speed? please help.

    It's just the camera. The prop spins so fast that the camera makes it look like it's slowing down or changing directions
