Tunisia's Abandoned Ancient City in the Sky (Guermessa, Tataouine) - Bradt Guides تونس

Today we explore the wonderful site of Guermessa in Tataouine Governorate, Tunisia. This was once an impregnable Amazigh fortress (ksar), perched on top of a mountain in the Dahar range of Tunisia's south-east, dating back to the seventh or eighth century CE. Today it is completely abandoned, but you can still explore the extensive ruins, which have recently been refurbished, including housing, an olive oil press, a mosque, a shrine and ancient graves where human remains are visible today due to weathering of the burial stones. This should definitely be a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is amazing!

I cannot believe that Guermessa is not one of Tunisia's UNESCO World Heritage Sites! To see which locations made the cut, check out my Tunisia UNESCO World Heritage Sites playlist, which I will add to over time (Tunisia has eight in total): kzread.info/dash/bejne/qYdrppmep7u2pLg.html

Agreed! I think Tunisia's Tentative Lists submitted to UNESCO as of 15 April 2019 does not include Guermessa. It does include the following potential World Heritage Sites though: 1) Chott El Jerid 2) Frontières de l’Empire romain : Limes du Sud tunisien 3) île de Djerba 4) La Table de Jugurtha à Kalaat-Senen 5) Le complexe hydraulique romain de Zaghouan-Carthage 6) Le Permien marin de Jebel Tebaga 7) Le Stratotype de la limite Crétacé-Tertiaire (limite K-T) 8) Les carrières antiques de marbre numidique de Chimtou 9) Les Mausolées Royaux de Numidie, de la Maurétanie et les monuments funéraires pré-islamiques 10) Médina de Sfax 11) Oasis de Gabès 12) Parc National d'El Feija 13) Parc National de Bouhedma whc.unesco.org/archive/2019/whc19-43com-8A-en-Rev.pdf

Yes, they really need to build a Dar up there somewhere, or a campsite. It would be great for more people to see this place.

Guermessa and Douiret are amazing, and much more impressive than Chenini in my opinion.

I agree that Guermessa is the most impressive of the group. Which is why it is so surprising to find an excellent Dar in Chenini, and two Dars in Douiret but not a single Dar in Guermessa. Lots of tourism potential here!

This is an Amazigh abounded town , well it was a town long long time ago. If you see houses on mountain in north africa that means it is an Amazigh village, we are known for living in mountain areas.

It needs a Dar and some information signs...but it is beautifully isolated at the moment!
