*QUESTION* I have an 1986 shortbed yota...runs great tuned it up...but it blows high HC when I get a smog test...The carb was replaced 3 years ago but it's a California carb...adjustment screws are glued...I was running NGK Iridium plugs but they would get massive carbon buildup over about 10.000 miles...so went back to the standard copper NGK"s...the ignition is stock...is it possible that the Iridium plugs weren't getting enough juice to burn off all the fuel in the combustion process or is my carb just running too rich? Also...it has a new 49 state catalytic converter and muffler...new O2 sensor.

I can’t find your page i have a misfiring problem after driving through a puddle i replaced the spark plugs, wires, dizz cap, rotor didn’t change a thing trows black smoke and small really bad

What about adjusting the choke?

1977 20r rebuilt carb. Think cheap rebiuld. 1yr. Ago. Did same thing after warm 2 store stops start. It seemed like it was coughing turning off after turning key off. Eventually engine settled. Start up not quick like it used to. Sort of like it was flooded. Kept using it that way. Recently.... Had a water pump leak got gasket. It overheated chugga a lugged home 1/4 mile. Barely got under car port turned off engine. Got water pump gasket, cleaned old pump, bought fail safe thermostat new gasket, flushed cleaned radiator & reservoir container. 1 new spark plug, all new wires. Starts up after book adjustments runs OK, but craps out, sluggish, engine shakes then dies. Gas pedal like air no strength. After cool down......adjusted screws but does not seem to get a higher idle to come down or go up, just stays where it runs.... Maybe I am not aggressive enough to turn idle in or out while running. Book says 21/2 turns out after seating on mixture...... HELPING suggestions? 😊😃 💋😘 Someone said, timing. I wanna turn distributor and see Mark move to right. Mark all the way to left. Maybe chugga a lug 1/4 home to rough loosened it up. Not sure. Always ran 👍till I say a mechanic wanted more money from OLD LADY.....

Nice video, even though it was short. I have the same carburetor,and my engine stalls , unless I turn that middle screw to a high 1600 rpm. The air,fuel mixing screw, has no effect , what so ever , any idea why ,please . Do I have to take the carburetor a part and clean it to thoroughly

I had no choice, but to dismantle that sucker to pieces, Luckily I found a video on KZread, on how to dismantle, clean and put together that Carburetor, I also made a video and post it on KZread ,for anybody having a problem with The 21 R engine, which is a copy for the 22R engine .I made a citation for the dude who posted the original video. The engine now purrs like a kitten.😊

87 Toyota pickup 22r 4wd new parts,engine, carb,fuel pump,and distributor. Runs good and accelerates fine until i shift into 4th and seems to lose power not sure what it could be any would be appreciated

Check for vacuum leaks, I have a 85 4x4 with the same problem. Now it's fixed.

Check ur spark plugs and spark plug wires, i had that same issue i had full power from 1s to 3rd gear but in 4th I'd lose power5.

What does the diaphragm do that is on the bottom left. i got a replacement carb and my old carb did not have this , I don't know what to connect it to ?

@@alabamafarm174 I think it must be from the air conditioning, since when connecting any vacuum hose there the engine revolutions increase

It's the Idle Up Diaphragm. It helps with the throttle, but I think some models of pickups like mine don't come with it.

Josh, What would make a 22r carb misfire, and not stay running. Could it be the AAP Diaphragm cause that, or the float. I have almost 300,000 mi. Thanks

David Regan my Toyota was misfiring too and I adjusted the valves and that made a world of difference

@@austincowell8740 check the power to the fuel solenoid. If no power she will run when you have a foot on the pedal but will not idle at all

Depends on the engine that's in your Corolla. The carbs pretty much correspond to the engine type.

Have a cap over mix screw ?

Same. Toyota didnt want you to mess with it so they capped that screw

Dice que el primer Tornillo es el ajuste de las Revoluciones cuando lo enciendes en la mañana cuando esta Frio el segundo tornillo el de mas arriba es el ajuste de tus revoluciones sin acelerar como cuando se pone al tiempo y el Tercer tornillo el de Hasta abajo el la Mescla si le das a la derecha le cortaras la Gasolina y se oira como que el motor le falta chispa es por mucho aire y poca gasolina y al devolverlo le daras vuelta despacio hacia atras hasta que el motor se empareje.

What this dude fails to mention, is that the mixture screw is covered by a metal cap that has to be drilled out in order to get to the screw. Perhaps a more detailed explanation would be better rather than giving these folks false hope, but I digress.

The misfire has nothing to do with the carb. Most likely it in the distributor, wiring , or spark advance . A good tune up would be a good starting point...

What is it when the spark plug starts to lick oil????

For all of you toyota guys/ girls out there I have a quick question for ya. I have a1983 Toyota pickup with a 22r engine and the pickup will start and idle fine, until you go to drive it. It will drive about 1/2 a blocks and shut off and you will have to wait a few seconds to try and turn it over again or you will just have it turn over. If it does start it will just die right away and not even idle. Does anyone have an answer. I would really appreciate it. Thanks

Do the mixture 2 1/2and idle screw adjustments 3 1/2 out. Could be the idle screw needs a half turn back in. The second adjustment screw in video. Good luck

Ozziejoe okay. Thank you. My dad and I started messing with the carb while it idled and we got it pretty good. Then when we started to drive it did the same thing. I looked it up and online forums was saying that the fuel sending unit was going bad. Which doesn’t make since because it is all Mechanical. Thanks

josh Stewart you could give the fuel pump a sharp tap with a steel rod or something. Might free up the pin.
