Tudor Black Bay Pro Review, Too Thick?

The Tudor Black Bay Pro is hyped up for a reason. It’s a compact size watch and it packs one heck of a punch, but is it too chunky, thick or heavy? Surprisingly, not at all.

    I just picked it up from my AD last Friday. I was basically sold on it before I had a chance to see it in person. When I finally did get my hands on it, the larger grippy crown and the Tfit clasps closed the deal for me. I have a 7inch wrist and it fits perfectly, the thickness doesn't bother me. Great review and the one that you did before this comparing it to the Rolex Explorer II. If you're looking for a vintage Explorer II without the price, this is a great watch to consider. I hope Tudor puts this crown and clasp on the next BB58 and a little bit more teeth on the bezel and that's going to be my next watch. Thank you.

    The day they were announced I ordered a BB Pro from a local Tudor AD, loved the look of the faded orange colour on the dial and hand, the resemblance to the 1655 Rolex was unmistakable. Add the T-fit bracelet, case size, previous positive experience with modern Tudors - I own both a BB36 and a 58, consider me sold. It has been about 8 weeks in my possession and I still have reservations and a couple of positives to point out. First, the thumbs up, the T fit, love it, why all current watches don't come with a similar adjustable bracelet is a mystery to me. The accuracy is also a plus, less than a second a day gained over the past two months, couldn't ask better. OTOH, it is a bit thick, making the adjustable bracelet essential to ensure a snug fit. The overall weight in my second concern, on my skinny wrist it is a noticeable heft, so far I'm living with it but only time will tell.

    Another great review Harrison. I appreciated the exact thickness measurements on different points of the case. It looks like the side of the case is 2.5mm too thick vs the Explorer II and the crystal 1mm too thick. I could live with the crystal but not with the extra bulk of the case. Looking forward to the video on your thoughts of the Polar, especially how transitioning from black dials to a white dial has impacted your journey, and overall on how you feel about it. Was the 4 year wait worth it? Not for you after all? Crazy in love with it? . Keep up the good work!!

    Great job. Funny I am on the wait list and the Explorer II Polar (new only, won’t buy the used or spend $1 over MSRP) is my grail. Completely agree about adapting - I jump back and forth; have a Helm Komodo white dial that’s 15.6! No problem. Just picked up the re-released Steinhart Ocean GMT (patina version) - assuming the Tudor dealer keeps selling the Pros to their flipper buddies and I lose interest in the Pro. Great watch for $500.

    The way the case is beveled makes the thickness (almost) a non-issue. Very easily could be a one-and-done. And your point about the bezel numerals disappearing at a distance is something I really like as a security feature. Traveling with it means it’s very under the radar and less likely to make you a target.

    “Subtle and under the radar” is what I’m going for, but I also want a watch that I will love to wear everyday and will last the rest of my life. So I’m still on the fence about a used 16570 (40mm) or the BB Pro. Also, what about overall long-term cost of ownership, I’m assuming Rolex will cost more to service or is that a wash?

  • @HarrisonElmore

    @HarrisonElmore

    That’s a tough call. For me, I buy for design, but I keep based on wearability, how easy is it to slip it on and it disappear. The Pro was never going to be that watch for me. Ended up being too thick. Plus compared to the Explorer II it was never a keeper. Just a stop gap. My two cents! Wear both several times and then decide!

    Long story short if you like thin dress watches, this is not your watch. Save up and get the explorer 2. Otherwise its fantastic. I own it and would love if the midcase was a little thinner, but it’s the most comfortable watch I own and ticks every “adventure watch” checkbox I could ask for. Extra personal preference bonus for me is no cyclops window. Every clasp on every watch brand should follow this example.

    Yea I don't get why it had to be so damn thick. Were vintage watches that big in the past? Not that I remember. Just throws the proportions off too much for me. Like they were trying to take a page out of the Invicta playbook and some of their hideous monster watches. Overall not terrible but I'd have to get one one wrist to truly judge this watch.

    I feel like the watch is just ridiculously thick for 39mm and people are trying to justify to themselves that this is somehow OK because the best feature of this watch is that "it looks like a Rolex" lol. Seriously, nobody would even look at this piece if it wasn't for the Rolex connection, let's be real. And I find that quite the opposite - the bracelet fits more on the BB than on this, because here we have a real tool look with matte dial, no polished hands, and yet the bracelet is the thing that's Vintage and overcomplicated with the rivets. Maybe a real nice SIMPLE tapered bracelet would save this watch, at this point these huge slab sides of the thick case are hard to look at, even harder with the straps...

    @@drdesign6886 so..they purchased, it's theirs. It is their venture and is part of Tudor. The movement is being developed exclusively for Tudor by themselves, so it is an in-house movement. All the brands that you would consider as using in-house movements, are most likely using a completely different division or "company" to build them. I find it different than what ETA is doing. But some ETA movements can also be considered in-house in my book. Like with various Longines, some of their movements are made exclusively for them by a company that is within the same group. Some brands on the other hand just use a regular ETA or Selitta, used by various brands and models, and call it a fancy name. That's not in-house. But as I said, to me the in-house movement thing doesn't matter one bit. All I care is that the movement is great and reliable. And "regular" movements are even easier and cheaper when it comes to servicing, so that's fine by me, as long as brands don't overcharge and keep the watch cost reasonable for a watch with a certain movement inside.

    @@tiagodvt I don’t care about in house either. Biggest marketing trick in luxury watches. Tudor to me are a bit of joke brand though - they charge luxury prices for a watch that is designed by Rolex and the in house movement is one they simply bought. Just my opinion mind - some ppl like a luxury homage brand and that’s cool. Some like Steinhart and that cool. Just not for me personally.

    @@BB-gl7zt LOL, fair. In his defense, he said the watch is very amagnetic not only silicon hairspring which I think can be considered effectively amagnetic as hairspring. The steel parts in almost every other part of the watch can be easily magnetized which can all affect its timekeeping, though certainly not as much as that of a magnetized hairspring. Silicon's dielectric constant is very low but it is non-zero so it is not technically amagnetic in all applications and if one were to be insist on perfect usage of the word, one would have to qualify it with claiming it is effectively amagnetic in its application inside a stated range of electromagnetic field strength within an acceptable tolerance to not affect its performance. That would be confusing and unnecessary outside of a technical manual, or at the very least, be an annoyingly long bullet point in sales and marketing materials and KZread video. (Full disclosure, I am responding at 6am before my coffee so I could be wrong. Also, I was a very poor student and I had to take my graduate level electromagnetism course thrice to pass to eventually get my physics degree. Now I am discussing watches online while sitting at home in my underwear. Money well spent. Sigh.)
